INTRODUCTION
=============
Thank you very much for purchasing our FUJITSU SCSI MO Device Driver Package.
This package includes the
- MODISK.SYS (MO Device Driver for OS/2 version 2.1)
- MOFORMAT.EXE (MO Formatter for OS/2 version 2.1)
This driver enables access to magneto-optical (MO) disk drives connected to
the IBM PC compatible PC under OS/2.
This package (version 2.1) supports both 512 bytes and 2048 bytes per
sectored MO disks. You can use 128MB, 230MB, 540MB and 640MB MO disks.
Installation and use of the MO driver are explained in Chapter 1.
Instruction of this device driver is explained in Chapter 2 and 3.
The MOFORMAT utility is explained in Chapters 4 through 5.
Installing device driver package
1. INSTALLATION
1.1 Operating requirements
Hardware requirements;
- IBM PC or compatible PC which is compatible with OS/2 Warp.
- SCSI host adapter card
- Fujitsu MO disk drive connected via a SCSI interface
Software requirements;
- OS: OS/2 Warp version 3.0 or later (3.01 is recommended) *1
- SCSI adapter driver supplied with OS/2 (*.ADD file) *2
*1 If you use the oldest version of OS/2 Warp 3.0, you might have some errors.
For example, CHKDSK may return error. So we recommend you to apply CSDs
which you can get from IBM.
*2 Most major SCSI adapter drivers are included in the OS/2 package or
accompanied with the SCSI adapter card.
1.2 MO Disk Types Supported
This package supports
- 3.5 inch MO disk
- Sector size: 512 bytes or 2048 bytes
- Capacity: 128 MBüC230 MB, 540 MB or 640 MB
1.3 Installing with the OS/2 System Installer(DDINSTAL)
Here we assume the following drive configuration.
- A: drive contains the device driver disk.
- C: drive contains the OS/2 system and is the boot drive.
To install this package, proceed as follows;
1) Start DDINSTAL.EXE
Mouse operation installation;,
- Double click on the icon of "OS/2 System" to show "OS/2 System -
Icon View" window.
- Double click on the icon of "Device Driver Install" to show
"OS/2 Device Driver Installation" window. (as below)
Command line operation installation;
- In the "OS/2 window", type "DDINSTAL" then return.

2) Check the Source and Destination directory, then click on "Install"
to select the device driver program. Then "Select Device driver to
be installed" dialog will appear (shown below).

3) Within the window of "Select Device drivers to be installed", select
"FUJITSU 3.5" SCSI MO Disk Device Driver (ver 2.1 US)". Then click on
"OK" to start installation of the MO Device Driver and Formatter onto
the C:\OS2 directory as designated.
When the installation is finished, "OS/2 Device Driver Installation"
window will appear again. Click on "End" to quit the program.
4) Reboot the OS/2 to make the installation effective.
1.4 Installing the package Manually
To install the package manually, follow the instruction below.
1) Copy both device driver and formatter onto system directory.
For example, in the OS/2 window, type as follows.
copy a:modisk.sys c:\os2
copy a:moformat.exe c:\os2
2) Register device driver and ASPI manager in the "config.sys" file.
The ASPI manager is included in the OS/2 system.
For example, using your editor, add the following two lines in
"config.sys".
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD
DEVICE=C:\OS2\MODISK.SYS
1.5 Setting hardware
You may have to setup the SCSI adapter card or MO drive again.
Please consult each manual to setup them.
a) SCSI adapter card
üiEnable DISCONNECT command)
Some SCSI adapter card can disable DISCONNECT command. Disabling
DISCONNECT will greatly slow down the performance and you cannot get
OS/2 benefit. So, please make sure that DISCONNECT command is enabled.
(Disable 'mount removable disk as fixed disk' function)
Some SCSI adapter card can mount removable disk drive as fixed disk
drive. This function is will not suitable for MO.
b) MO Disk drive (Set as MO-type, not HDD-type)
Usually, MO drive has 2 drive mode - MO mode and HDD mode. And if the
drive is set as HDD mode, it may not be recognized by ASPI manager.
Please consult the MO drive manual and check that is set in MO
mode.
c) Review the setting of MO disk and other SCSI equipment
Wrong configuration of SCSI equipment may cause malfunctions.
Please consult the manual of each piece of SCSI equipment and check
the following items.
- No two SCSI equipment have same SCSI-ID.
- SCSI cable is connected in fasten, and is not too long.
- There are two and only two SCSI terminators. (one at each end)
Some equipment has internal terminator which can result in improper
setup.

2. OVERVIEW
The MODISK.SYS version 2.1 is an OS/2 device driver needed to access Fujitsu
Magneto-Optical (MO) disk drives connected to IBM PC compatible computers.
This device driver automatically detects and access the following MO disk
formats. So it is easy to exchange your data between different kinds of system
using MO disk.
- NSR type format
- Superfloppy type disk format
- PC hard disk type format
- FMR hard disk type format
This version supports both 512 bytes and 2048 bytes per sectored MO disk.
3. DESCRIPTIONS
3.1 Option Parameters
You may add optional parameters in the config.sys file.
Optional parameters are not case sensitive such as /R and /r.
1) /Rn or /R:n (Number of reserved drives)
'n' is a number between 1 and 10. Default is 1.
A series of logical drive names can be reserved for each MO drive
for future partitioning. If the number of valid partitions exceeds
the number specified /R option, and if /S option is not specified,
up to 16 partitions are allowed.

Note : This sample description assigns two logical drives on
each MO drive. If the MO disk inserted at boot time has 3
partitions, 3 logical drives are assigned.
2) /S (Reserved drive priority)
No more logical drives than the number of /R option is assigned.
When the number of reserved drives specified with the /R option is
fewer than the number of valid partitions on a disk, the number of
reserved drives takes priority. For example, if there are four
valid partitions on the disk and the number of reserved drives is
specified at 3, a logical drive name cannot be assigned to the
fourth partition, and hence it cannot be accessed.

3) /I {h:} m {[n]} {+-{h:} m {[n]}}+-... (Specify the drive ID )
This parameter specifies the target MO drive by the host adapter
number and SCSI-ID number. If this option is not used, all
accessible MO drives are used by default.
h is the host adapter number (between 0 and 9). The default is 0.
m is the SCSI-ID number (0 to 7).
n is the number of reserved drives. When 'n' is omitted, the value
specified with the /R option is used.

Note : This sample description try to use two MO drives
- SCSI_ID 1 MO drive connected to host adapter 0
- SCSI_ID 0 MO drive connected to host adapter 1
Two logical drive letter will be assigned for the first MO
drive, and one for the latter drive.
Note : The host adapter number is 0(zero) if you have only one SCSI
host adapter card.
3.2 Startup notification
MODISK.SYS displays the following message at startup;

Explanation
1) Driver name, version, and copyright.
2) The adapter number, the SCSI ID number of the drive and the vendor
identification.
3) The format of the current MO disk is displayed as MediaFormat=.
- UncertainMedia = Unknown format or no MO disk in drive
- Super FPD Format = Superfloppy disk format
- AT DISK Format = PC hard disk format
- NSR Format = NSR format
- FMR Format = FMR hard disk format
4) Status display for each logical drive
- Ready Start=0x00000000= Accessible and start positions

3.3 Supported Logical Formats
The MODISK.SYS driver automatically detects the following four disk
formats, and assigns logical drive names such as D:, E:, etc.;
- NSR format
Worldwide standard (ISO13346) for multiple partitions. One MO disk
can be divided into multiple partitions (logical drives), and each
disk can have its own identifier. NSR (Non-Sequential Recording)
is the basis of ISO13346.
- Superfloppy disk format
Typical MO format used in PS-DOS or Windows. Only one logical drive
is assigned onto the one entire disk. This format is often referred
to as "IBM format."
- PC/AT hard disk format
Partition format used for PC/AT hard disks which is supported by
FDISK command. This format is commonly used under Windows NT, or
when MO drive is set as HDD compatible mode.
- FMR hard disk format
Partition format used for Fujitsu FMR or FM-Towns hard disk.
One MO disk can be divided into multiple partitions, and each disk
can have its own identifier.
Note: MO disk formatted or partitioned using other format are
considered as empty disk.
VFAT (virtual file allocation table) long file name uses different
method than OS/2. So if you use long file name, be careful because
Windows95 (or WindowsNT) and OS/2 are not compatible in the way they
manage file names.
3.4 Software configuration
The MODISK.SYS device driver operates under OS/2 version 2.1 or later,
and accesses the MO drive via the SCSI manager (OS2ASPI.DMD). The
following software programs must be present;

Notes;
1. OS2ASPI.DMD is required as the SCSI manager. Because OS2SCSI.DMD
may also work as SCSI manager, some allocation may be required.
2. Because MO disk is removable media, OS/2 does not support HPFS
file system for MO.
3.5 Notes on Use
1) MODISK.SYS has the device name 'MO-DISK$', so this name will not be
allowed as file name.
2) DISKCOPY command supports non-partitioned disks only. So only the
superfloppy formatted MO disks can be used with DISKCOPY command.
3) If, when using /R option, more than the actual number of the
partitions have been specified as reserved drives, some logical drive
may not relate to the physical partition. If you access such a logical
drive, you will get a "drive not ready" message.
4) The very early version of OS/2 Warp 3.0 (3.00) may cause problems.
For example, CHKDSK command may return error even for the normal MO disk.
We recommend you apply the CSD (or FIXPACK) which you can get from IBM.
5) Some SCSI adapters can disable the DISCONNECT command. But do not disable
DISCONNECT command or you'll get poor performance and you might have
trouble if you try to access the SCSI disk from more than 2 programs at
once.
6) If you use long file names and exchange data between Windows95(or NT)
and OS/2, be careful because these operating systems use different way
to manage long file names. Refer to the manual of OS/2 for detail.

4. OUTLINE
The MOFORMAT utility is designed to initialize MO disks using the Fujitsu MO
drive and MODISK.SYS. Both low level and high level format is possible.
Low level format may be refered to as 'physical format' or 'long format'.
The MO disk is normally low level formatted at at the factory.
Low level format (long format, physical format), which is the physical
formatting of the disk surface, creates sectors on the disk. MOFORMAT
enables you to do a low level format on an MO disk. Before you can use
an MO disk, it must have been Low level formatted.
However, low level re-formatting is normally only required if the disk
generates many errors during use. This is because nearly all MO disks
currently on the market have already been Low level formatted before
you buy them.
Logical format may be refereed to 'hi-level format'. So that OS/2 correctly
recognize the disk, logical format is required.
This MOFORMAT utility supported the following logical formats.
- Superfloppy format
- PC hard disk format
- NSR format
FMR hard disk format is recognized only to notify you that the disk may
contain you data.
Using PC hard disk format or NSR format, MOFORMAT can create up to 10
partitions on one MO disk. On creating partition, MOFOMAT formats each
created partition into FAT (file allocation table) file system.
This version of MOFORMAT supports both 512 and 2048 bytes per sectored disk.
5. DESCRIPTIONS
5.1 How to start MO formatter
There are two ways to start MOFORMAT.
(1) Type 'MOFORMAT' and [Enter] on the command line.
or
(2) Double click on the icon of MOFORMAT.EXE in the '\OS2' folder.
Then, MOFORMAT will start and show the drive selection dialog.
If MOFORMAT does not show the drive selection dialog or displays any
error message, quit the program and review all software and hardware
configurations.
5.2 Flow of the operation
The following chart shows the MOFORMAT functions and dialogs.

5.3 Selecting MO drive
On this dialog, select the MO drive which you want to format and select
the type of logical format which you are going to create.
To select one item, use mouse click or short cut key (ALT + one key).

(1) Select a Drive Unit (Drive Info: )
Here is a list of the MO Drivers that are currently managed by
MODISK.SYS. Select one of these drives which will be used to format
your disk. If there is a MO disk inserted in the selected MO drive,
the current logical format of the disk is shown at the lower part of
this area.
(2) Select a Format Type
The logical format type which will be created on the disk is displayed
here. If this format type is differ form what you want open the list
box, then select format type. You may select Superfloppy type, PC Hard
disk type or NSR type.
[ ] Low level Format
To do Low-level Format, click mouse button to mark this check box or
move cursor to the box and press space key.
(3) START
Click here to continue formatting. Then MO disk is locked and the eject
button on the drive will not function until you finish the formatting
or you quit the program.
(4) END
Click here to quit the program.
(5) Error messages
You might encounter the following error message.
- MO Drive is not ready.
- Device is already in use.
In these occurs, please check the MO drive status or insert the MO disk
into the drive and wait until the green LED is off.
5.4 Super Floppy format
Here, you can specify volume label, partition name, partition size.
Partition name is used as the label of a partition.
Depending on the type of format, there are two kind of dialogs;

Click on [FORMAT] to start format. Then next dialog will appear.

Click on [Yes] to confirm then formatting will start.
If you have checked [ ] Low level format on the startup dialog, it
will take about 10 to 20 minutes to do the Low level format.
The actual time depends on the condition of the MO disk.
5.5 Partitioned format (PC/AT HDD or NSR type)
When you select PC/AT HDD type or NSR type, you can specify the
name and the size of each partition. When you select NSR type,
you can set volume ID also.
Up to 10 partitions can be created on each MO disk.
Current information of the partitions are shown. Use [CREATE],
[DELETE], or [RENAME] to specify the partitioning method you choose.
Then click on [FORMAT] to perform actual formatting.

If you are going to change the type of disk format, the disk is
regarded as an empty disk.
(1) Volume ID
This volume ID is valid only for NSR type.
Click on the volume ID input field, then type in the chosen name.
(2) Create a partition
Select a Free partition, then click on [CREATE]; or double click
on the Free partition.

Enter the label name and partition size (in Mega bytes), and
click on [CREATE]. The partition name is used as volume label of FAT
file system of that partition.
(3) Change the name of partition
Select the partition which you want to change the name of.
Then click on [RENAME].

Type in the new partition name, then click on [CHANGE].
(4) Delete a partition
Select the partition you want to delete. Then click on [DELETE];
or double click the partition which you want to delete.

Click on [Yes] if you really want to delete that partition.
(5) FORMAT
Click here to reflect current partition information on to the disk.
Then the Confirm dialog will appear. (as below)

Click on [Yes] to confirm partitioning and formatting.
If you CREATE/DELETE partitions, all data on that partition may
be lost forever, so always backup any important data you have on
that MO disk prior to stating MOFORMAT.
If you have checked [ ] Low level format on the startup dialog,
it will take about 10 to 20 s to do Low level format.
The actual time depends on the condition of the MO disk.
(6) CANCEL
Click here to quit without changing the partition information.
This is useful when you want to review the current partition.
5.6 End of formatting
When formatting has been finished, following dialog will appear.

Click on [OK]. Then MO disk will be ejected and the Startup dialog
will be displayed again.
