  2. UltraStor ISA disk device driver for OS/2 version 1.2/1.21
  3. ----------------------------------------------------------
  4.  
  5. This help file describes the procedures for installing the ULTRA-12F/12C
  6. ESDI disk controllers and the OS/2 device driver to eliminate the 528 Mbyte
  7. hard disk partition limitation. The device driver supports the standard OEM
  8. edition of OS/2 Version 1.2 or 1.21.  Some OEMs may modify this driver and
  9. make the procedures listed below incompatible.  If unforeseen problems occur,
  10. contact the OEMs suppling OS/2.
  11.  
  12. This OS/2 device driver supports the UltraStor's track mapping mode for large drives and drives with greater than 1024 cylinders.
  13.  
  14. The device driver supports two controllers with upto 4 ESDI drives.  One
  15. controller should be setup as primary port and the other as secondary port.
  16.  
  17. The device driver is also intended to support LAN Manager Version 2.0;
  18. and only under LAN manager, can two controllers be setup to support the
  19. disk duplexing function for fault tolerance. 
  20.  
  21.  
  22. Controller Hardware Setup:
  23.  
  24. To set up the controller as the primary port, following jumpers should
  25. be set:
  26.  
  27.     JP10 -     1-2     OUT    * BIOS address at C800:0
  28.                3-4    OUT
  29.                5-6     IN
  30.  
  31.     JP12 -         OUT    Hard disk primary I/O port address (1F0-
  32.                 1F7, 3F6-3F7)
  33.  
  34.     JP17 -         IN     Enable floppy controller (If system mother
  35.                 board doesn't support floppy circuit)
  36.             OUT    If system motherboard supports floppy
  37.  
  38.     JP20 -     1-2    OUT
  39.         2-3    IN    IRQ14 selected
  40.  
  41.  
  42.    Note: The primary card BIOS address can also be at D000:0 or D800:0.
  43.  
  44.  
  45. To set up the controller as the secondary port, following jumpers should
  46. be set:
  47.  
  48.     JP10 -     1-2     OUT    * BIOS address at CC00:0
  49.                3-4    IN
  50.                5-6     OUT
  51.  
  52.     JP12 -         IN    Hard disk secondary I/O port address (170-
  53.                 177, 376-377)
  54.  
  55.     JP17 -         OUT     Disable floppy
  56.  
  57.     JP20 -     1-2    IN    IRQ15 selected
  58.         2-3    OUT
  59.  
  60.    Note: The secondary card BIOS address can also be at D400:0 or
  61.          DC00:0 but must be at higher address than the primary card.

  64.          Please refer to UltraStor ULTRA 12F or 12C Installation Guide for
  65.          the remaining jumper settings.

  68. Hard Disk Setup:
  69.  
  70. 1.  Set the jumpers for the desired configuration for all the ESDI drives. 
  71.     The drive selection should be set to drive select #2 for all the drives
  72.     using twisted cable.
  73.  
  74. 2.  Connect the drive power to the system power supply.  Make sure that the
  75.     system power supply can support the attached ESDI drives.  Otherwise,
  76.     a separate power supply is needed.
  77.  
  78. 3.  Plug in the controller card in a 16 bit AT slot.
  79.  
  80. 4.  Connect the 34 pin daisy chain flat cable to J5 connector on the 
  81.     controller.  The edge connector near the twisted end of the cable is
  82.     connected to the first drive.  The other edge connector should be
  83.     connected to the second drive if second drive is to be attached.
  84.  
  85. 5.  Connect the 20 pin flat ribbon cable from the first drive to J4
  86.     connector on the controller.  Connect the other 20 pin flat cable from 
  87.     the second drive to J3 connector if second drive is to be attached.
  88.  
  89. 6.  If the system motherboard doesn't support floppy, connect the 34 pin 
  90.     daisy chain floppy cable to J1 connector on the controller.
  91.  
  92. 7.  Repeat step 3 to 5 for the secondary controller card and drives.
  93.  
  94.  
  95. Hard Disk Drive Media Preparation:
  96.  
  97. 1.  Boot up the system with a DOS diskette in drive A, and load DEBUG program.
  98.  
  99. 2.  Following the prompt "-" sign, type in g=C800:5 (or g=D000:5 or g=D800:5
  100.     according to the BIOS address setting in the primary controller).
  101.  
  102. 3.  Select the "Drive Parameter Setup" option.
  103.  
  104. 4.  Select the following mapping mode ("Native Mode") for all the drives
  105.     connected to the controller :
  106.  
  107.             One Spare Sector/Trk    NO
  108.             Sector Mapping        NO **
  109.             Track Mapping        NO ****
  110.             1024 Cyl Truncation     NO
  111.  
  112.      **    Select 63 sector mapping mode if the drive's sector per track
  113.                number is more than 63, as with most 20 Mhz ESDI drives.
  114.  
  115.      ****  For OS/2 version 1.2 only ---
  116.            If the drive has more than 528 Mbyte capacity, track mapping
  117.                mode can be turned on to allow dual boot feature with DOS.
  118.  
  119. 5.  Hit F10 to save and F5 to confirm execution.  The utility will update 
  120.     the system with the correct hard disk drive parameters and reboot
  121.     from DOS.
  122.  
  123. 6.  After the system reboots, reload DEBUG and enter the "Drive Preparation"
  124.     menu.
  125.  
  126. 7.  Go to the AUTOFORMAT field, select BRIEF, hit "Enter" and F5 to confirm
  127.     and begin formatting of the drive.
  128.  
  129. 8.  Repeat step 7 for the second drive if applicable.
  130.  
  131. 9.  Repeat step 1 to 8 for the secondary card (if applicable) but with
  132.     g=cc00:5, g=d400:5, or g=dc00:5 depending on the BIOS address setting
  133.     on the secondary card. 
  134.  
  135. 10. The system is now ready to install OS/2.
  136.  
  137.  
  138. OS/2 Installation :
  139.  
  140. The replacement procedure for the OS/2 device driver works with IBM OS/2 1.2,
  141. and the standard OEM MS OS/2 version 1.21.  Other versions have not been
  142. tested.
  143.  
  144. Note :       (For ULTRA-12C controller only)
  145.              During the installation, the "defer write" option needs to be
  146.            turned off. After installation, the "defer write" can be turned
  147.            back on. Turning "defer write" on and off can be done by running
  148.        the UltraStor on board BIOS setup utility.
  149.  
  150. 1. Procedures for OS/2 Version 1.2 with 3-1/2" diskette
  151.  
  152.    1)  "IMPORTANT !!!"  Back up the original OS/2 "Installation" diskette and
  153.        use the backup copy of the diskette to do the following.
  154.  
  155.    2)  Replace the OS/2 ISA disk device driver with UltraStor's device driver
  156.        by copying OS2_12\disk01.sys from UltraStor's "ISA DOS Utilities &
  157.        device drivers" diskette to the OS/2 "Installation" diskette.
  158.  
  159.           e.g. A>copy a:OS2_12\disk01.sys b:
  160.  
  161.    3)  Boot up the system with the modified "Installation" diskette in 
  162.        drive A:.
  163.  
  164.    4)  Proceed with the normal OS/2 installation.
  165.  
  166.        Note:  Please refer to OS/2 installation guide. 
  167.  
  168. 2. Procedures for OS/2 Version 1.2 with 5-1/4" diskette
  169.  
  170.    1)  "IMPORTANT !!!"  Back up the original OS/2 "Installation" diskette and
  171.        use the backup copy of the diskette to do the following.
  172.  
  173.    2)  Since the "Installation" diskette does not have enough space to
  174.        accommodate the UltraStor's device driver, following step is one way 
  175.        to get around it.
  176.  
  177.    3)  Copy all *.RC@ files and FDISK.COM to a temporary diskette.
  178.  
  179.    4)  Delete all *.RC@ files from the "Installation" diskette to make
  180.        room for UltraStor's device driver disk01.sys.
  181.  
  182.    5)  Copy OS2_12\disk01.sys from UltraStor's "ISA DOS Utilities & device
  183.        drivers" diskette to the OS/2 "Installation" diskette.
  184.  
  185.          e.g. A>copy a:OS2_12\disk01.sys b:
  186.  
  187.    6)  Boot up the system with the modified "Installation" diskette in
  188.        drive A:.
  189.  
  190.    7)  Proceed with the normal OS/2 installation to insert operating 
  191.        diskettes #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5, until when asked to reinsert
  192.        "Installation" diskette.
  193.  
  194.    8)  Prior to insert the "Installation" diskette,
  195.  
  196.        a) Delete FDISK.COM from the "Installation" diskette.
  197.        b) Restore all the *.RC@ files from the temporary diskette
  198.           to "Installation" diskette.
  199.        c) Insert the "Installation" diskette to complete the 
  200.           installation.
  201.  
  202.    9)  After completion of the OS/2 installation, you may want to restore
  203.        the "Installation" diskette by
  204.  
  205.        a) Delete disk01.sys.
  206.        b) Restore files *.RC@ and FDISK.COM from the
  207.           temporary diskette.
  208.  
  209. 3. Procedures for LAN MANAGER Version 2.0 (with 3-1/2" diskette)
  210.  
  211.    The ISA disk device driver that comes with the LAN Manager software package
  212.    need to be replaced with the UltraStor OS/2 device driver in OS/2 
  213.    "installation" and LAN Manager "OS/2 Server 2" diskettes.
  214.  
  215.    There are three steps for installing LAN Manager file server.
  216.  
  217.   A) OS/2 installation:  (!! LAN Manager works only with OS/2 V1.21)
  218.  
  219.    1)  "IMPORTANT !!!"  Back up the original OS/2 "Installation" 
  220.        diskette and use the backup copy of the diskette to do the
  221.        following.
  222.  
  223.    2)  Replace the OS/2 ISA disk device driver with UltraStor's device
  224.        driver by copying OS2_12\disk01.sys from UltraStor's "ISA DOS 
  225.        Utilities and Device Drivers" diskette to the OS/2
  226.        "Installation" diskette.
  227.  
  228.           e.g. A>copy a:OS2_12\disk01.sys b:
  229.  
  230.    3)  Boot up the system with the modified "Installation" diskette in 
  231.        drive A:. Proceeds with normal OS/2 installation.
  232.  
  233.    4)  In "Preparing the Fixed Disk" menu, select "Specify your own
  234.        partition", if you intends to use disk duplexing function.
  235.        If there are only two hard disks in the system, either "Accept
  236.        predefined partition" or choosing the maximum size for the
  237.        primary partition will prevent disk mirroring setup. "Accept 
  238.        predefined partition" option will create a single boot
  239.        partition on the entire drive 0 and the boot partition can't be
  240.        mirrored under LAN Manager Version 2.0.
  241.  
  242.    5)  In "Select the File System" menu, select "High Performance File
  243.        System". Only the High Performance File System allows disk
  244.        duplexing function.  Proceed to complete the OS/2 installation.
  245.  
  246.   B) LAN Manager Installation
  247.  
  248.    1) After OS/2 system is installed successfully. Reboot system.
  249.       "IMPORTANT !!!" Back up the original LAN MANAGER "OS/2 server 2"
  250.       diskette and use the backup of diskette to do the following.
  251.  
  252.    2) Replace the OS/2 LAN MANAGER ISA disk device driver with
  253.       UltraStor's device driver by coping OS2_12\disk01.sys from
  254.       UltraStor's "ISA DOS Utilities and Device Drivers"
  255.       diskette to the LAN MANAGER "OS/2 server 2" diskette.
  256.      
  257.       e.g. A>copy a:OS2_12\disk01.sys b:
  258.     
  259.       The following Installation should use the modified "OS/2 server
  260.       2" diskette.
  261.     
  262.    3) Insert Disk 1 LAN MANAGER "OS/2 - SETUP" diskette in drive A:.
  263.       Goto OS2 Full Screen and type A:SETUP. Hit return and follow LAN
  264.       MANAGER installation.
  265.     
  266.    4) In "Install LAN Manager" menu, select "Server" option and follow
  267.       the installation instructions. Make sure to use the modified
  268.       "OS/2 server 2" diskette for installation.
  269.    
  270.    5) Please refer to LAN Manager documentations for detailed LAN 
  271.       Manager installation description.
  272.  
  273.   C) Fault Tolerance Setup.        
  274.  
  275.    1) After LAN MANAGER is installed successfully, goto OS/2 window.
  276.       Run "FDISKPM" for partition creation and run "FTSETUP" for 
  277.       Fault-Tolerance System Setup.
  278.  
  279.       Please refer to LAN Manager documentation for detailed 
  280.       descriptions.
