  3. This readme file contains information on how to install the Thinkpad
  4. Crystal Semi 4231 Audio Device driver for CS4231 and compatibles in OS/2.
  5.

  7.  Users requiring support who have access to the IBM public support
  8.  forums on CompuServe, OS2BBS, and Prodigy should obtain answers
  9.  to their questions by interacting with IBM personnel
  10.  who monitor those bulletin boards.  Users may also report suspected
  11.  defects relating to this code by completing a problem report
  12.  form available on the bulletin boards.  This support is ongoing.
  13.  It is not limited to a 60-day entitlement period, nor does it
  14.  preclude any other form of OS/2 support.

  16.  Users who do not have access to electronic networks
  17.  can call 1-800-992-4777 for support.  In order to access
  18.  this support, it is necessary to supply the registration number
  19.  that was included on an enclosure with your Product.
  20.  Applying the Crystal Semi WINOS2 Audio Device Support does not
  21.  extend the initial 60-day support period provided when the
  22.  the OS/2 product was purchased.

  26. System Requirement
  27. ------------------
  28. Before you install Thinkpad Crystal Semi Audio for OS/2, check to see if you
  29. have the October 1993 version of the MMPM/2 CSD, or later level, installed on
  30. your system (CSD stands for Corrective Service Diskette)
  31. Use the SYSLEVEL command to determine which level of MMPM/2 you have installed.
  32. The "Current CSD Level" field displays a similar

  35.    UN00000 - The version of MMPM/2 as shipped with OS/2 2.1. An update
  36.              is required.
  37.    UN09407 - The October 1993 CSD version of MMPM/2.
  38.              No update is required.
  39.              This is the same version for the OS/2 2.11 service
  40.              refresh of February 1994.

  42. The MMPM/2 CSD should be installed on top of OS/2 2.1 and can be obtained free
  43. from Compuserve or from the IBM OS/2 BBS.

  51. Thinkpad Crystal Semi 4231 Audio for OS/2 Installation Procedure
  52. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  53. It is required before installation that audio support is first removed.
  54. To do this, rename the mmpm2.ini file in the MMOS2 directory to mmpm2bak.ini.    
  55. Reinstall MMPM/2 from the CSD or your original MMPM install disks.  Do not
  56. select any Audio devices at this time. Install only SMV and CD (if installed).
  57. Installation of the Thinkpad Crystal Semi Audio is detailed below:
  58.  
  59. To install device support, insert the Thinkpad Crystal Semi Audio for OS/2
  60. diskette in driver A:.  Start the multimedia installation program, located
  61. in the Multimedia folder on the OS/2 desktop.  Once you are in the Multimedia
  62. installation program, select Source Drive A: (or whichever drive Thinkpad
  63. Crystal Semi Audio for OS/2 diskette is in).  Select the "Thinkpad Crystal
  64. Semi 4231 Audio" icon after it appears.

  66. The Multimedia installation program adds two Thinkpad Crystal Semi 4231 Audio
  67. device driver statements to your CONFIG.SYS file.  These statements are
  68. displayed as follows:
  69.  
  70.    DEVICE=c:\mmos2\cs4231.sys N:BSAUD1$
  71.    DEVICE=c:\mmos2\vcs4231.sys BSAUD1$

  74. Thinkpad Crystal Semi 4231 Audio for Windows / WinOS2 Installation Procedure
  75. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  76. To add Audio support for Windows or WINOS/2, run the command file, WIN_INST
  77. from an OS2 prompt. WIN_INST requires two parameters, the windows directory
  78. and the OS2 drive. If native Windows is used type the following command:
  79.                 WIN_INST C:\WINDOWS D:
  80.

  82. If WINOS/2 is installed on the system, use the following command:
  83.                 WIN_INST D:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 D:
  84.  
  85.                 where d: is the drive on which OS2 is installed.
  86.  
  87. This REX command file will modify the SYSTEM.INI file in windows.
  88.  
  89. IMPORTANT:
  90.  
  91. ** DO NOT run WIN_INST more than once without restoring the SYSTEM.INI file **
  92.  
  93. ** THE system must be rebooted after WIN_INST completes **
  94.

  96. Using Audio in DOS and Win-OS/2 Sessions
  97. ----------------------------------------
  98. Support will need to be added from Device Drivers that come with the hardware.
  99.  
  100. To enable Audio for DOS sessions, you must set DOS properties to the
  101. following:
  102.  
  103.    AUDIO_ADAPTER_SHARING    Required
  104.    INT_DURING_IO            On
  105.    IDLE_SENSITIVITY         100
  106.    HW_TIMER                 On
  107.    VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION  Off
  108.  
  109.   To change these settings, do the following:
  110.  
  111.   1.  Display the pop-up menu for the WIN-OS/2
  112.       session by pressing mouse button 2.
  113.   2.  Select the arrow to the right of OPEN; then
  114.       select SETTINGS.
  115.   3.  Select SESSION.
  116.   4.  Select WIN-OS/2 SETTINGS.
  117.   5.  Change the settings as required; then select
  118.       SAVE.
  119.   6.  Close the Settings notebook for the WIN-OS/2
  120.       session.

  122. The line in gain is set for a Microphone. It can be changed by 
  123. editing the CS31ba11.INI file in the windows directory. Change
  124. lMicVolume and rMicVolume to values between 0 and 65535 to
  125. suit your specific gain requirements. 0 is th lowest setting
  126. and 65535 i
  127. s the highest volume.

  129. Audio Concurrency Issues - OS/2, DOS, Win-OS/2
  130. ----------------------------------------------
  131. OS/2 MMPM/2 is designed such that, when an application is running in
  132. the foreground (has focus), then that application takes priority over
  133. others running in the background.  Background applications are put on hold
  134. until they are placed in the foreground (have focus).
  135.  
  136. When you have a single audio device, it is not possible for two programs
  137. (device drivers) to use the device at the same time.  For example, if one
  138. application has the device configured for audio playback, and a second
  139. application configures the device for audio record, the application with
  140. the focus takes priority and the application in the background is placed
  141. on hold.  This situation also exists for sampling rate and sample size
  142. configuration.
  143.  
  144. DOS applications do not participate in MMPM/2 resource management.
  145. When DOS and Win-OS/2 sessions use the audio device, all other programs
  146. are unable to access the audio device.
  147.  
  148. Audio device drivers for Windows, installed under Win-OS/2, attempt to use
  149. the audio device in all Windows sessions.  For Win-OS/2 sessions which do
  150. not use the audio device, you can set the AUDIO_ADAPTER_SHARING property
  151. to "None".  This prevents the session from accessing the audio device, and
  152. enables the device to be used by other applications.
