  18.         ESS Technology is providing updated OS/2 drivers for the
  19.         AudioDrive ES688 chip in this Software Release.  These drivers
  20.         are complete updates to prior ESS releases for OS/2 Warp 3.0.

  50.         The AudioDrive ES688 OS/2 Drivers Software Release incorporates
  51.         new changes done to the previous release, Version 2.01.

  53.         Version 2.02 Changes
  54.  
  55.         1. DOS session can use 2 operation MIDI music.
  56.  
  57.         2. An OS/2 driver for use with ES688 PnP is added.
  58.  
  59.         3. Input source monitoring during non-recording time is
  60.            implemented.  However, there are some limitations to this
  61.            feature due to the design of MMPM/2.  When Digital Audio
  62.            comes up, the default microphone input source is used.  If
  63.            you want to switch to line in, you must start recording to
  64.            send the information down to the driver.  After then if the
  65.            input source is switched back to the default microphone
  66.            because a wave file is opened, you have to turn monitor off
  67.            and then on to switch back to line in.

  72.         Known Problems
  73.  
  74.         1. Opening too many MIDI files makes the OS/2 system unstable.
  75.            This problem is related to MMPM/2 and depends on system
  76.            resource.  On systems with 8 Mbs memory, the limit is 3;
  77.            16 Mbs, 6.
  78.  
  79.         2. Tempo in MIDI files may not be 100% accurate due to timing
  80.            delay and MMPM/2 architecture.

  82.         3. Running MCI commands "seek wave to #" and then "play wave" to
  83.            a 16-bit wave file sometimes generates very loud static
  84.            noise.  Likewise using "record wave from #" to record a
  85.            16-bit wave file may generate wrong file.  It all depends on
  86.            the seek position.

  91.         Installation Notes
  92.  
  93.         To install the new drivers successfully the following steps must
  94.         be taken:
  95.  
  96.         1. Open an OS/2 Window and run the EINSTALL.EXE program on the
  97.            installation disk by typing "A:EINSTALL 688."  For ES688
  98.            with PnP support, use "A:EINSTALL 688P."  The program first
  99.            calls ESUNINST.EXE to remove old drivers.  That program will
  100.            create a backup of CONFIG.SYS named CONFIG.ESS and remove
  101.            the audio device lines from CONFIG.SYS.  It also creates a
  102.            backup of MMPM2.INI named MMPM2.ESS and removes the audio
  103.            drivers information from MMPM2.INI.  In addition, it removes
  104.            any other ESS driver information in COMPLIST.INI.  After
  105.            then, the installation program calls Multimedia Application
  106.            Install program, MINSTALL.EXE.
  107.  
  108.         2. When Multimedia Application Install program brings up, a
  109.            checkmark beside AudioDrive ES688 means that item is already
  110.            selected.  To toggle selection, click the mouse on the item.
  111.            If WinOS2 is installed in the system, you can select
  112.            WinOS2/Windows Audio support also.  If not, make sure that
  113.            item is not checked.  Click the Install button to start the
  114.            installation.  Once the drivers are installed, shutdown OS/2
  115.            and reset the computer for the new ES688 drivers to take
  116.            effect.

  118.         3. Since this version of MINSTALL.EXE changes the icons of MIDI
  119.            player and Digital Video player to that of Digital Audio
  120.            player in the Multimedia folder, you may want to change them
  121.            back to the originals.  To change the icon of MIDI player,
  122.            right click MIDI player to bring up the menu.  Select
  123.            Settings, select General, and click the Find... button.  In
  124.            the Start Folder window, enter \MMOS2\INSTALL.  Click the
  125.            Find button and a window of all found icons appears.  Select
  126.            MIDIPLAY.ICO and click OK.  Close the MIDI player Settings
  127.            notebook.  For Digital Video player, repeat the above steps
  128.            but select VIDPLAY.ICO instead.

  130.         4. If the MIDI plays are not smooth in WinOS2, you need to
  131.            change the timer resolution.  Edit SYSTEM.INI in your Windows
  132.            directory.  Under [timer.drv] are TIMERMax386Res and
  133.            TIMERMax286Res.  You need to change the values to less than 8
  134.            from the default of 10.
  135.  
  136.         For ES688 PnP, in a system with Plug and Play support the
  137.         optimal settings will be used instead of the settings specified
  138.         in CONFIG.SYS.  If you change the ES688 PnP settings in a
  139.         system with no Plug and Play support, be sure to reset the
  140.         computer for ES688 PnP to forget its previous settings.
