  23. TalkThru is a Presentation Manager based asynchronous, TCP/IP and Netbios
  24. Terminal Emulation product. Version 1.03 of TalkThru is a 16-bit version
  25. designed for OS/2 version 1.2 and above. Version 2.3 of TalkThru is a full
  26. 32-bit version developed specifically for OS/2 version 2.x.

  28. TalkThru has been developed to expand the host systems available to OS/2
  29. workstations by providing Terminal Emulation plus an EHLLAPI interface to
  30. many host environments not readily available to OS/2. The protocols
  31. supported by TalkThru include:

  37.     TELEVIDEO
  38.     TYMNET78

  44. TalkThru will communicate through:
  45.  
  46.   o A directly connected COM Port.
  47.   o A COM Port redirected to the IBM LAN Shared Serial Device Support.
  48.   o The Communications Manager's ACDI.
  49.   o ACDI redirected to an IBM LANACS Modem Pool.
  50.   o IBM's TCP/IP for OS/2.
  51.   o OS/2 LAN Requestor, LAN Enabler or Novell's Netbios Interface

  53. Although TalkThru can cooperate closely with the Communications Manager
  54. without impacting its function or performance, The Communications Manager
  55. is not required for successful TalkThru operation.

  57. For the NOVICE USER, TalkThru provides an easy to use, intuitive environment
  58. for making quick connections to Compuserve, Bulletin Boards and a variety of
  59. host environments.

  61. For the SOPHISTICATED USER, TalkThru includes a development programming 
  62. language entitled AUTOPILOT which allows OS/2 Workstation Developers to 
  63. quickly and easily automate all host activity, whether the host is a 
  64. TalkThru session or any session available through the IBM standard EHLLAPI 
  65. interface. AUTOPILOT can be used to build sophisticated Presentation 
  66. Manager Dialogs and also supports Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) to 
  67. allow the development of cooperative applications.

  69. For the DEVELOPER, TalkThru has implemented an EHLLAPI interface which is 
  70. compatible with the one used to direct the Communications Manager. This 
  71. allows other development languages (i.e. 'C', EASEL, The Applications 
  72. Manager, etc.) to direct the asynchronous connections provided by TalkThru 
  73. in the same manner they can direct 3270 sessions with the Communications 
  74. Manager.

  76. TalkThru File Transfer supports all the popular protocols including 
  77. X, Y and ZModem, Compuserve B+, IBM IND$FILE and Kermit. It also has 
  78. support for Drag And Drop such that file transfer operations can be 
  79. automated.

  83.                          2. Product Description

  86. 2.1 Terminal Emulation 
  87.  
  88.   The Terminal Emulator within TalkThru allows for easy, intuitive
  89.   modifications by providing numerous dialogs available from pull down
  90.   menus on the terminal emulator screen. The changes that can be made in
  91.   this manner include, not only the specifics of the connection (device,
  92.   parity, baud, etc.), but also many of the aesthetics. Amongst others,
  93.   the individual user can specify:
  94.  
  95.    - What is to appear on the terminal emulator status line.
  96.  
  97.    - What PC keys are assigned to which Host keys.
  98.  
  99.    - What foreground and background colors are to be mapped to the terminal
  100.      protocol field attributes (i.e. High Intensity, Low Intensity,
  101.      Protected, etc.).
  102.  
  103.    - Which font should be used. Several fixed pitch fonts are distributed
  104.      with the TalkThru product allowing a Terminal Emulator screen to be
  105.      just one window on the desktop or the entire desktop, but any fixed
  106.      pitch font available on your OS/2 system can be selected.

  108.    - What action the Left and Right MOUSE Buttons perform. This can
  109.      include:
  110.   
  111.        o positioning the cursor
  112.        o sending the text under the MOUSE
  113.        o sending the host key associated with the text under the MOUSE
  114.  
  115.   Any of these parameters may be modified temporarily to view their effects
  116.   or can be saved as permanent settings for a specific Terminal Emulation
  117.   environment. There is also a DEFAULT setting for each of these if you
  118.   wish to restore any environment to the distributed settings.

  121. 2.2 Emulator Screen Buttons

  123.   The TalkThru Terminal Emulator also allows you to specify up to 144
  124.   Emulator Buttons which appear under the terminal emulator screen. These
  125.   buttons appear up to 12 buttons per row on up to 12 rows. These buttons
  126.   are an integral part of HP 2393A/HP 2397A Terminal Emulation, but are
  127.   also available with any of the other protocols supported by TalkThru.

  129.   These Emulator Buttons can trigger any keys that might normally be
  130.   triggered by the PC Keyboard. An example of this might be the 3270 Keys:

  132.       PF1-24
  133.       CLEAR
  134.       ERASE EOF
  135.       PA1-3

  137.   Or, the Emulator Buttons may trigger other activities such as:
  138.  
  139.       - invoking AUTOPILOT programs to automate host sessions
  140.       - invoking OS/2 programs that can now run as separate OS/2 Sessions
  141.       - sending PC Keystrokes to the host system to start host sessions
  142.       - displaying another row of Emulator Buttons in a menu hierarchy
  143.  
  144.   The Emulator Buttons provide a useful mechanism for building OS/2
  145.   Professional Workstation environments which require little or no keyboard
  146.   skills.

  149. 2.3 Drag And Drop 
  150.  
  151.   The TalkThru Terminal Emulator also supports the OS/2 Drag And Drop
  152.   feature. If a file name is dragged from the OS/2 File Manager and
  153.   dropped onto the Terminal Emulator, you may specify a command to be
  154.   executed. This feature will most commonly be used to invoke a file
  155.   transfer operation.

  158. 2.4 The Phone Book 
  159.  
  160.   The main component of TalkThru that always appears on the desktop is a
  161.   Phone Book. The Phone Book is an OS/2 window which lists the various
  162.   TalkThru connections that are available to this OS/2 Workstation user.
  163.   If desired, multiple Phone Books can be active concurrently.
  164.  
  165.   It is from the Phone Book that all TalkThru sessions are initiated. Any
  166.   number of sessions from any number of Phone Books can be active at any
  167.   given time. The only limitation being the number of concurrent sessions
  168.   that can be supported by your communications hardware.

  170.   For example, if you only have one Modem attached to a single COM Port,  
  171.   you probably can have only a single session active.  But if you have a 
  172.   LAN Modem Pool, a TCP/IP network, or Netbios connected hosts, you may 
  173.   be able to support a large number of connections concurrently.

  175.   The Phone Book contains several dialogs from Pull Down Menus which allow
  176.   you to:

  179.       Add/Delete/Change Phone Book Entries
  180.       Define/Modify COM Port Configurations
  181.       Terminate TalkThru

  184. 2.5 EHLLAPI Support 
  185.  
  186.   The TalkThru EHLLAPI interface has been developed to be compatible with
  187.   the standard IBM EHLLAPI interface to the Communications Manager. The
  188.   majority of EHLLAPI calls will work transparently across all protocols
  189.   supported by the Communications Manager and TalkThru. This means that any
  190.   Proprietary Product or Development Language (i.e. EASEL, REXX, 'C',
  191.   'COBOL', etc.) that supports EHLLAPI will be able to view and direct any
  192.   TalkThru session exactly as it does with the Communications Manager.

  195. 2.6 File Transfer

  197.   The following File Transfer protocols are supported by TalkThru:

  199.      o Ascii
  200.      o Screen Capture
  201.      o XMODEM/YMODEM/ZMODEM
  202.      o IBM IND$FILE
  203.      o Compuserve B+
  204.      o Kermit

  206.   Dialogs for performing all of these File Transfers are available from the
  207.   Terminal Emulator window or can be automated through AUTOPILOT or EHLLAPI
  208.   Programs.

  211. 2.7 AUTOPILOT Programming Language

  218. A demonstration version of TalkThru For OS/2 is available from Compuserve.
  219. The version available is the 32-Bit version, 2.3.
  220.  
  221. The demonstration version contains all of the functionality of the 
  222. production product, except that the Terminal Emulator and AUTOPILOT 
  223. "scripts" will timeout after 10 minutes.

  230. TalkThru For OS/2 version 2.3.  Both files are in self-extracting ZIP
  231. format (DOS version).

  233.    TT2MAN.EXE  - is a self-extracting ZIP file containing a "text only" 
  234.                  copy of the TalkThru Users Guide.  This manual contains 
  235.                  a chapter, "Installation", explaining the installation 
  236.                  process.

  238.                  Once you have decompressed TT2MAN.EXE, you will find the
  239.                  "Table Of Contents" in the file README.DOC.

  241.    TT2PRD.EXE  - is a self-extracting ZIP file containing the entire 
  242.                  DEMO version ready to be installed.

  244.                  If you wish to unzip TT2PRD.EXE, you MUST use the format:

  246.                        TT2PRD -d

  248.                  The -d parameter is required to inform unzip to build the
  249.                  necessary sub-directory structure for the CIDS (IBM
  250.                  Customization, Installation and Distribution facility)
