Installation Procedure
----------------------
Before installing TE/2, take a moment to make a backup copy of the
TE/2 distribution diskette. Put the original away for safe keeping and
use the copy for installation. To install TE/2, simply place your backup
copy of the TE/2 distribution diskette into drive A: and type and type
"A:INSTTE2".
To speed the installation process, you may want to copy the contents
of the distribution diskette into a temporary directory on your hard
disk and execute INSTTE2 from there instead.
INSTTE2 will attempt to preserve your existing TE2.INI and other user
configurable files but, as with any software installation, you are
STRONGLY urged to back up your current setup before proceding! Sometimes,
because of this caution against overwriting your user configuaration files,
INSTTE2 may erroneously fail to extract the default files when they are,
in fact, needed. You will be able to recognize when this happens if
the configuration routine complains that it cannot find TE2.INI immediately
after the installation. If this happens, you should allow the configuration
routine to terminate and run the INSTFIX.CMD located on the installation
disk. INSTFIX.CMD requires some command line parameters; if you run it
with no command line parameters, it will inform you of what is required.
After successfully running INSTFIX.CMD, you should then run CFGTE2 to
complete the installation.
After installing TE/2 via the INSTTE2 program, you may use CFGTE2 to do
some TE/2 configuration. CFGTE2 presumes that all of the modem setup
files are in a file named "modems.bin" in your TE/2 directory. This
file is identical to the file of the same name shipped with TE/2 Pro.
If you install TE/2 Classic and TE/2 Pro in the same directory, you
will save some disk space by not duplicating this file. If you uninstall
TE/2 Pro, however, this file will be erased so you should make a copy
if it to restore afterwards if you need it for CFGTE2.
Previous versions of CFGTE2 placed numerous modem setup files in a
"Modems" subdirectory underneath the TE/2 program directory. The new
INSTTE2 does NOT remove these files or this directory. If you have no
further need for them, they may safely be removed.
CFGTE2 also assumes that your TE2.INI file is named "TE2.INI" and that it
is similar in structure to the default version of this file. Not every
TE2.INI file setting can be modified with this version of CFGTE2 but we
hope that the basics have been covered. For the less common settings, you
will still need to modify TE2.INI directly with a text editor.
WARNING: If you are using INSTTE2 to install or re-install the Oberon
Desktop Folder, you should be aware that any existing Oberon Folder
will be completely deleted and rebuilt in the process. This will happen
even if you have renamed the original folder. If you have customized
your Oberon Folder in any way and wish to save your changes, either you
should not use this feature of INSTTE2 or you should copy your existing
folder or its contents to a safe location before running INSTTE2.
