Subject: MR/2 PM Progress Conf: MR-2 (208)

Hi.
Just a friendly MR/2 PM development update - so you guys know that I really
*am* doing something!
First item of motivation: Warp breaks MR/2 PM versions past 0.99F. My
dynamic positioning of pushbuttons does not function as it did in all
previous versions of OS/2 (my hacked-method of resize dialog boxes :).
Second motivational item: I now have 6 months of high-intensity PM coding
under my belt using Raleigh System's ObjectPM class libraries. I've done
some "neat" things at work, and with ME/2. This in addition to my previous
bout with native PM API coding. MR/2 PM is just calling out for a facelift
:)
Third item: I've again caught several (an almost obscene number) of public
messages announcing how wonderful KWQ is. I've seen quotes like "it's the
best QWK reader I've seen on *any* platform". I still give it that it's
very pretty, and logically organized ... of course, so are many of the
Windows readers I've examined.
I've taken a new, very hard look at KWQ. It's nice, and it even does a
couple of things that MR/2 doesn't do. Minor things, and MR/2 does one or
two dozen MAJOR things that KWQ doesn't address. Ah well ...
Forth: I'm assuming (hoping? :) that Warp will bring a whole new base of
users to the OS/2 market. I want to be ready with a better MR/2 PM.
So, I've been playing on two separate fronts. First, I have a 32-bit
version of my QWK engine compiled. This remained very untested ... but it
compiles (and that wasn't as easy as one might think!). Second, I've been
throwing together a "prototype" of the new MR/2 PM. It will use the same
class library as ME/2 (so it will be larger than the current version, but
much. much prettier and feature-packed. And stable). I've got some killer
ideas that I'm trying to add, but my main thrust is to duplicate the
functionality of the existing MR/2 PM and add all the MR/2-classic features
it's missing, all in a state-of-the-art GUI package.
The GUI front end is almost complete. My prototype looks good. It
resembles the existing version, but include more menus, toolbars, status
areas (and of course, options to show/hide many things to your heart's
content :) I'm ready to start applying the QWK-engine code, in pieces. I'm
still very early in this "port", but I'm pretty excited with my progress.
My main priority through Christmas and starting the new year will be getting
this version to a point where it can replace the existing MR/2 PM. Stay
tuned for progress reports!
Nick
