-------------------
What is Test Drive?
-------------------
Test Drive is a special "try-before-you-buy" version of HyperACCESS
Version 6.0 for OS/2, intended for free distribution through bulletin
boards, user groups, trade shows...or for you to pass on to your
friends! Test Drive shows how easy it is to get started with
HyperACCESS, and lets you place calls and try every feature that you
will find in HyperACCESS.
The purpose of Test Drive is to help you decide whether to buy
HyperACCESS. Because we never intended Test Drive for sustained,
day-to-day use, Test Drive discards user-defined settings after each
session and limits sessions to 3 calls or one hour. (Naturally,
HyperACCESS itself does not behave this way.)
Test Drive is not shareware, and not designed for ongoing use. If you
attempt to use it that way, you'll probably find its "test-drive"
limitations irritating. We really meant for it to be like test
driving a new car: See how comfortable its seats are, check out its
well-designed controls, and see how crisply it handles. Then, if you
like what you see, order one fresh from the factory...rather than
wishing you could drive the demo model to work every day.
---------------------------------------
What You May Legally Do with Test Drive
---------------------------------------
You may legally obtain a copy of Test Drive from a friend or BBS and
try it, to decide if you want to buy HyperACCESS for OS/2. In
addition to trying Test Drive yourself, you may legally give the
original Test Drive .ZIP files to others, or upload them to BBSs so
others can download them. We supply Test Drive as two .ZIP files
rather than one, so you can easily copy them onto two 3.5" diskettes.
Never give others anything but the complete, original .ZIP files, so
that everyone will receive the right files in mint condition.
Test Drive is intended for evaluation purposes only; sustained use or
sale is prohibited. Attempting to reverse engineer or modify Test
Drive is unlawful. All rights reserved by Hilgraeve Inc., copyright
1995.
---------------------------------
How to Install and Use Test Drive
---------------------------------
Test Drive is provided as two .ZIP files, which contain (in
compressed format) all the files you need to run Test Drive. Follow
these steps to install and run it:
1. Use PKUNZIP to unpack HAOTD1_1.ZIP and HAOTD1_2.ZIP into a single
directory on your PC.
2. Run SETUP.CMD in that directory. This creates a HyperACCESS folder
and desktop objects that you can use to run the program.
3. Run HAOS2.EXE to start HyperACCESS Test Drive.
Each time you start it, Test Drive runs a setup facility that you can
use to configure it for your modem and PC for the duration of that
one session. Test Drive discards these settings after each session,
and limits sessions to 3 calls or one hour. Other than these
restrictions, Test Drive is functionally identical with HyperACCESS
for OS/2 (which contains no such restrictions).
As you will see from Test Drive, HyperACCESS's design is quite
intuitive. To place a call, you simply double-click the desired
phonebook entry or drag it to the Terminal tab. To add a new entry,
select File/New or click the New button in the Main Phonebook. Most
people can run the program without ever using the online help, but
it's there if you need it.
--------------------------------------------
Upgrading from Other Communications Products
--------------------------------------------
Test Drive lacks HyperACCESS's ability to import phonebook entries
from other communications programs, because Test Drive discards
user-defined settings between each session. With HyperACCESS for
OS/2, however, you will be able to import phonebook entries from
HyperACCESS Lite (included in the OS/2 Warp BonusPak), HyperACCESS/5,
HyperACCESS for Windows, or Procomm.
-----------------------------------------
How to Remove Test Drive from Your System
-----------------------------------------
Removing Test Drive is easy, because it makes no changes to
CONFIG.SYS or other system files. Simply run UNINST. It will
delete the HyperACCESS files and remove its folder and desktop
objects. It leaves the directory structure intact, in case you've
put other files there while using Test Drive.
---------------------------------
Program Features Too Good to Miss
---------------------------------
You'll find many advantages of HyperACCESS for OS/2 perfectly
obvious. It's a fast, easy-to-use, 32-bit program that takes full
advantage of the OS/2 graphical environment and your modem. But here
are some specific points to watch for:
o View the Phonebook 4 ways (click the Rotate view button)
o Enter just phone numbers ... CommSense(TM) will figure out the
settings!
o Try 2nd or 3rd phone numbers automatically. Beat annoying busy
signals!
o Each phonebook entry has its own backscroll (saved even between
sessions!), so you can scroll back at any time to view information
that has already left the terminal screen.
o Click the right mouse button almost anywhere in the program, to
use handy pop-up menus of frequently used options.
o HyperACCESS comes with libraries of 1000s of online systems you
can call, which are actually ASCII files containing lists of BBSs
and online services compiled by 3rd-party authors. You can download
newer lists or a wide variety of similar lists from BBSs and online
services all over the world.
o Forget about using awkward on-line editors. Click the Message Pad
button (it looks like an ink pen), compose your message, then click
the Send button.
o Maximize HyperACCESS, and you'll notice it shifts instantly to
largest possible font for easy viewing (especially handy with
laptops).
o Click the Record button, perform steps you want to automate, and
then click Stop!, to generate ready-to-run REXX scripts that you can
use to log on, or assign them to buttons or keys for online use.
o Automate or customize your communications using OS/2's own REXX
language, or the external language of your choice! HyperACCESS has a
complete Application Programming Interface, so you can drive it with
almost any programming language. (See APIHELP.TXT.)
o Fast, efficient file transfers. Compare its transfer speeds to
other programs and see for yourself. (It's best to use a stopwatch;
some other programs display inaccurate transfer speeds.)
o Use the powerful Host mode to let callers log on, and upload or
download files while you're using other applications...or while
you're not even there!
o Try Weather Report, a cool utility that keep you abreast of up-to-
the-minute changes in the weather around the country. It calls a US
Government BBS and downloads weather maps and satellite images (.GIF
files) that display real-time, as you receive them.
o Use Split-Second, the little atomic clock icon in the Phonebook.
When you double-click it, it calls a US Government BBS, picks up the
precise time and date from their atomic time standard, and sets your
PC's time and date accordingly.
o Includes built-in support for 100s of modems, plus support for use
through OS/2 modem pools and TCP/IP. Comes with a copy of Ray Gwinn's
renowned, high-performance shareware communications driver, which
lets OS/2 support up to 115,200 bps.
