  10. QVT/PM is a DEC VT220/102/52 terminal emulation and communications program
  11. which has been created to run under OS/2 as a true Presentation Manager
  12. application.
  13.  
  14. In addition to terminal emulation, QVT/PM offers file transfer facilities
  15. using three popular protocols - Kermit, XMODEM, and ZMODEM, as well
  16. as auto-dial and auto-login capabilities. Since QVT/PM is an OS/2 applic-
  17. ation, these operations, once started, may be sent to the background, thereby
  18. permitting the use of the machine for other tasks.

  20. This document does not constitute full user documentation, but it does tell
  21. you what you need to know to use and register QVT/PM.

  24. Hardware/Software Requirements
  25. ─────────────────────────────-

  27. QVT/PM requires OS/2 Standard Edition version 1.1 with Presentation
  28. Manager. It is compatible with OS/2 Extended Edition as long as the
  29. standard COM device driver is used, not the ACDI device drivers.
  30.  
  31. The only keyboard supported by QVT/PM is the 101-key 'Enhanced' keyboard.
  32. This is the keyboard most frequently found on computers which are powerful
  33. enough to run OS/2, and it also the one which is best suited to emulate
  34. the DEC LK201 keyboard.

  36. If you intend to use the modem-control features of QVT/PM, you must have a
  37. Hayes or Hayes-compatible modem. The modem should be set up to allow computer
  38. control of the DTR signal; consult the modem user's manual for instructions
  39. on how to do this.

  53. Notes on Operation
  54. ─────────────────-

  56. The QVT/PM screen contains a standard menu bar across the top of the screen.
  57. There are five pull-down menus which are used to operate the program:
  58.  
  59.         File            Perform file operations, e.g. load and save
  60.         Edit            For moving data to and from the Clipboard
  61.         Setup           Configure QVT/PM operating parameters
  62.         Modem           Control a Hayes-compatible modem
  63.         Transfer        Perform protocol file transfers
  64.  
  65. After QVT/PM is started, you must perform a config operation in order to begin
  66. communications. This may be done in one of two ways: you may invoke the
  67. 'Comm' option from the 'Setup' menu, or you may load a pre-existing config
  68. file (using the 'Open' option from the 'File' menu). A sample config file,
  69. 'DEFAULT.VT', is provided with this package.

  71. Note: the file DEFAULT.VT will, if present in the default directory, be
  72. loaded at startup time. The settings contained in this file will be the
  73. ones in effect.

  75. QVT/PM config files are created by the 'Save As' menu option (File menu). They
  76. must have the extension '.VT' in order to be recognized by the 'Open' menu
  77. option.  You also create and/or edit config files with an ASCII text
  78. editor, such as the OS/2 system editor, 'E'.

  81. Dialing

  84. Phone numbers may be associated with specific host configurations by
  85. placing a 'phone=' directive in the .VT file for that host.  This number
  86. will then come up automatically when the 'Dial' menu is invoked.

  88. QVT/PM also supports modem initialization strings.  These may be entered
  89. as 'init=' directives in the .VT file.  NOTE: if your modem responds
  90. to a carriage return as a command terminator (as most modems do), you
  91. MUST include a carriage return, notated as ^M, at the end of your
  92. initialization string.  For example, 'init=at&c1&d2x1^M' would be a
  93. valid initialization string for a typical Hayes-compatible modem.

  96. File Transfer

  99. When performing Kermit file transfers, make sure that you set the parity of
  100. the remote Kermit so that it matches QVT/PM's parity setting. Otherwise, the
  101. transfer will fail.

  103. After a file transfer has been started, you can use the mouse to switch to
  104. another OS/2 application while the transfer is proceeding.  Note that
  105. you should not switch to the DOS Compatibility Box, as this will cause
  106. QVT/PM's communications activity to be suspended.

  109. Login Script Processing

  112. QVT/PM supports a simple script language for the purpose of automatically
  113. performing routine login sequences.  The statements included in the
  114. script language are fully documented in the QVT/PM User Manual (provided
  115. to registered users).

  121. QVT/PM is intended for use with a computer with the 101-key Enhanced
  122. keyboard. The DEC LK-201 keys are mapped as follows:

  181. Versions of QVT
  182. ──────────────-

  184. QVT has also been implemented in versions for Microsoft Windows and for
  185. the Apple Macintosh. Both versions employ the capabilities of their
  186. respective graphical environments in order to provide exceptionally
  187. complete and accurate VT emulation, including features such as smooth
  188. scrolling, 132 columns, and double-size characters.

  190. WinQVT, like QVT/PM, supports background file transfer; MacQVT is
  191. fully Multifinder-aware.
