==============================================================================
Abstract: Zoom Telephonics Inc's $399 VFX V.32 and $449 V.32 bis facsimile
modems are reasonably priced and provide support for V.32 data
transmission, Group III fax transmission and Class 1 and Class 2 fax
modem board controls. Both devices come bundled with WordPerfect
Corp's MTEZ Standard with ExpressFax software and are compatible
with a wide variety of equipment. The units have standard LED
indicators and high-speed and error-control status lights. Fax
connections at 9,600 bps are reliable. Zoom provides a seven-year
warranty, but its technical support is only available during
business hours on weekdays. WinFax Lite fax software for Microsoft
Windows is available as a $20 option.

Zoom Telephonics' VFX V.32 and V.32bis fax modems exemplify the company's
flair for high functionality at a reasonable price. The modems provide not
only V.32 and Group III fax compatibility but also support both Class 1 and
Class 2 fax modem board control standards.
The devices come with a phone cable and WordPerfect Corp.'s MTEZ Standard with
ExpressFax. The modems are based on the Rockwell chip set. The only difference
between the two is that the VFX V.32bis supports 14.4-Kbps data connection
rates and the V.17 14.4-Kbps fax standard; the V.32 device handles 9.9-Kbps
connection rates.
The products come with standard LED indicators plus high-speed and
error-control status lights. In testing, the modems instantly connected with a
9.6-Kbps on-line service using V.32.
The VFX V.32's and V.32bis's support for both Class 1 and Class 2 fax modem
control standards gives them wide compatibility with existing and future fax
applications written to these standards. MTEZ comes with a Class 1 driver for
DOS applications. A $20 option is WinFax Lite, Version 2.0, a streamlined
version of Delrina Technology's popular full-featured WinFax Pro, which
supports Class 2. Both modem packages let you create groups of recipients and
phone books, schedule transmissions, and redirect printer output from
applications to a fax machine or fax modem.
If the VFX V.32 and VFX V.32bis have a fault, it is Zoom Telephonics' product
support. The company provides a decent seven-year warranty on the modems, but
its technical support hours are from 9:00 to 5:00 eastern time on weekdays
only--most of the products we reviewed have more total weekly hours.
The VFX V.32 and VFX V.32bis fax modems provide a rich assortment of modem
functionality and software flexibility to satisfy Windows and DOS fax users.
They reflect Zoom's reputation for building a solid product at a decent price.
