  4. Welcome to VBBS 6.11 beta!
  5.  
  6. This archive contains executables, default configuration and data files,
  7. this README, and a VBBS-OS2 registration form. The documentation for this
  8. beta release is available separately and should be available where you
  9. found this archive. VBBS documentation is now available in both
  10. ascii text file, and interactive hypertext formats.

  12. VBBS-OS2 6.11 beta Installation Instructions:
  13.  
  14. Having extracted the contents of this archive to a separate directory,
  15. run the INSTALL executable. If upgrading from a previous installation,
  16. the INSTALL program will merely copy over new EXE files. If this is a new
  17. installation, INSTALL will create needed directories, copy files, etc
  18. and provide you with a complete ready to run VBBS-OS2 installation.

  52. All of the following improvements apply to both VBBS-DOS and VBBS-OS2
  53. unless otherwise specified.

  55. 1. Changed message reader so that "Origin:" line is not displayed
  56.    if "Unknown System" (Finally got rid of that annoying "Unknown System" 
  57.    message. :-)

  59. 2. Speeded Up VBBS-DOS message text display.
  60.    (Thanks to advancements made in the development of VBBS-OS2.)

  62. 3. Corrected Incoming QWK message To: field for Fido and UUCP type
  63.    networks. (ie... networks that don't use user numbers.)

  65. 4. Adjusted String Memory allocations for better performance
  66.    in cramped memory spaces. (ie...Desqview and Windows)

  68. 5. Corrected VXY-OS2 Zmodem for low speed connections.

  70. 6. Corrected a minor bug in the New Upload Scanner.

  72. 7. Fixed VCONFIG bugs with regards to deleting text sections

  75. 8. VCONFIG now does automatic diagnostics upon start-up,
  76.    and lets the sysop edit System Paths Configuration
  77.    if needed. (If you've ever moved your VBBS installation
  78.    from drive C: to drive D: (for example), you may understand
  79.    the need for this new feature. :)

  81. 9. Fixed VCONFIG for OS/2 so that it doesn't load the system
  82.    while waiting for sysop input.

  84. 10. Increased limitation in VNET software:
  85.     AutoRequest Subs max 300 per board per network
  86.     AutoSecured Subs & Secured Subs max 32000 per board per network
  87.     
  88. 11. Added Quick-Validation/Edit feature to user editor.
  89.     Change users SL, Time Limit, Access Flags using 2 keystrokes.
  90.     Up to 9 configurable profiles, configurable via VCONFIG.

  92. 12. Added to Teleconference, Change Name Command, the ability
  93.     for the sysop to restrict names by setting up a text file
  94.     BADNAMES.TXT in the text directory.

  96. 13. Initial RIP implentation. Basically, this is in the form
  97.     of extending the ASC/ANS/MNU sequence to include checking
  98.     for a .RIP file if the user's default setup indicates RIP.
  99.     This will allow you to set-up RIP menus for your message
  100.     areas, file areas, email, etc etc. Simply create them
  101.     with RIPpaint (or equivalent) and place them in your text
  102.     directory.
  103.     
  104.     The second phase of RIP will come with the advent of
  105.     externalized strings, to be implemented soon.
  106.     (ie, A RIP file will be able to be substituted for
  107.     a plain text prompt string, if desired. Thus, "hooks"
  108.     to RIPscrip files will be able to put anywhere you
  109.     want without having to write scripts or modify source code.
  110.     What I have planned is really quite interesting, and very
  111.     flexible and powerful.)

  113. 14. Added new message read sub-command (Z) that allows a user to 
  114.     read messages non-stop.
  115.  
  116. 15. Speeded up startup initialization for both VBBS-DOS and VBBS-OS2.
  117.     (Startup of Main BBS program, and startup of VNET software.)
  118.     
  119. -->  Note: In order for this to work properly, you *must* run 
  120. -->  the newest VCONFIG and Recompile Your Network Info before bringing
  121. -->  this new version online.

  123. 16. Added new feature to DIRECTmail:
  124.     
  125.     With this new release of VNET and VME, comes the ability for
  126.     DIRECTmail to be used as an automatic file request (FREQ)
  127.     mechanism. 
  128.  
  129.     TO FREQ a file (both ends of connection must be running
  130.     the latest VME and VNET software):
  131.  
  132.     Send your DIRECTmail email normally like you have in the past;
  133.     when prompted for the Title:, enter in FREQ, a space, then
  134.     a list of filenames requested, separated by spaces. 
  135.     
  136.     Examples:
  137.     FREQ a-1.zip a-2.zip a-3.zip
  138.     FREQ qinfo42.zip
  139.     
  140.     Note that for a file area to be accesible via DIREECTmail FREQ,
  141.     the database configuration FREQ field must be enabled.

  143. 17. Further enhancements to DIRECTmail
  144.     a. Directmail functions are now handled by its own executable, VDM.EXE.
  145.        VDM.EXE automatically called as needed by VBBS/VME.
  146.        
  147.        VDM.EXE command line syntax:
  148.        VDM <ch> /DIRECTIN     Handle Incoming Call in Progress
  149.        VDM <ch> /DIRECTOUT:x  Call System x=Mail Slot #
  150.        
  151.     b. Up to 99 Mail slots are now available. 
  152.        Slots are automatically assigned as needed.

  156.        Assume there is no pending DIRECTmail on your system.
  157.        At the WFC screen, you send directmail to 16163994818.
  158.        It is tossed to DIRECTmail slot 1.
  159.        (DIRECT.1, FREQ.1, DIRFILE.1 in Data Directory.)

  161.        You then send directmail to 16163999769.
  162.        It is tossed to DIRECTmail slot 2.
