  3.                  Magnum BBS (r) - Version 8.07D2 (DEMO)

  5. Welcome to Magnum BBS version 8.07D2 (DEMO).  If this is your first DEMO
  6. of Magnum BBS software,  we'd like to welcome  you to the most  powerful
  7. BBS system  available for  the OS/2  operating system!   Please refer to
  8. your Magnum BBS user manual for installation and usage instructions; the
  9. final  portion  of  this  READ.ME  file  applies  only  to those who are
  10. installing version 8.07D2 over an existing DEMO version of the software.

  12.                            DEMO RESTRICTIONS:
  13.  
  14.                 128 Users (maximum) in the USER database
  15.                128 Messages (maximum) in the MSG database
  16.                 128 Files (maximum) in the FILE database
  17.                    Database PACK feature is disabled
  18.          Magnum-to-Magnum Remote Mail (AMMO/RMAIL) is disabled
  19.                  MILC commands @E2 and @E3 are disabled
  20.                   No QWK message uploads (downloads ok)
  21.           Serial# is 1111111111 (all DEMO's have this serial#)

  24. IMPORTANT:  Before starting the installation program (MAGSINT.EXE), have
  25.             the diskette in your A: or B: drive.
  26.             Start the install program as A:\MAGINST or B:\MAGINST
  27.  
  28. Unlike other BBS DEMOs, there is NO time restriction or expiration date.
  29. Use the DEMO as long  as you wish.  Chances  are that you'll run out  of
  30. space in the  MSG or FILE  database before you  run out of  space in the
  31. USER database.  We WANT you to get a feel of the power and  capabilities
  32. of Magnum BBS for OS/2,  so take your time... you are under  NO pressure
  33. to learn this system in x amount of days like other demo's!   And by the
  34. way,  the  commercial  release(s)  hold in excess of 6.6 million records
  35. of each of the databases.

  37. WARNING: Database Formats in the DEMO version are different than that of
  38.          the commercial format!  3rd-party and aftermarket programs
  39.          designed for the databases of the commercial release will NOT
  40.          work with the DEMO release!  3rd-party programs not using the
  41.          databases will work fine (ie: FOSSDM05.ZIP & MAGFOSS.ZIP, and
  42.          any door programs).

  44. IMPORTANT: If you "downloaded" this DEMO release, then you MUST copy ALL
  45.            files within the .ZIP file you downloaded onto a high-density
  46.            floppy diskette in your A: or B: drive!  Installation/upgrade
  47.            only takes place from the A: or B: drive!  There should be
  48.            19 files within the .ZIP file that you downloaded (including
  49.            this READ.ME file).

  51.            READ THE ADDENDUM.DOC FILE FOR IMPORTANT LAST-MINUTE INFO!!

  53.            NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
  54.                  HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
  55.                  (MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!

  57. IF YOU'RE NOT INSTALLING THIS OVER A PREVIOUS DEMO RELEASE, SIMPLY ENTER
  58. THE FOLLOWING COMMAND:

  63. Additional Files on this diskette that you should be aware of:
  64.  
  65.      ORDER.TXT - The ORDER form for Magnum BBS softare.  If you wish to
  66.                  purchase Magnum BBS software, use this handy form!
  67.  
  68.     MODEMS.TXT - Contains modem setup/initialization codes for the more
  69.                  popular modems.
  70.  
  71.     MAGFAQ.TXT - This text file contains a list of Questions and Answers
  72.                  on "Magnum Frequently Asked Questions" by new sysops.
  73.  
  74.   WHATSNEW.ZIP - Contains four files: WHATSNEW.5 thru WHATSNEW.8; each of
  75.                  these files tell what's new (in the commercial release)
  76.                  from the previous release (ie: WHATSNEW.8 tells what's
  77.                  new since version 7; WHATSNEW.7 tells what's new since
  78.                  version 6, etc).  To print these files, enter the
  79.                  following commands at an OS/2 command prompt (assume
  80.                  diskette in drive A:, and you're currently on drive C:):

  91.                  The above commands will print the WHATSNEW.8 file.
  92.                  Follow the same steps above, replacing WHATSNEW.8 with
  93.                  WHATSNEW.7 if you'd like to print this file too.

  95.     MAGDOC.ZIP - Contains the user manual.  You may print the user
  96.                  user manual by issuing the following commands at an
  97.                  OS/2 command prompt (assume diskette in drive A:, and
  98.                  1 Mb Free Space on drive C:):

  109.                  WARNINGS: - The user manual is formatted to print on
  110.                              66 lines per page, 80 characters per line.
  111.                            - If your printer performs an automatic
  112.                              "perf-skip", deactivate it!
  113.                            - If you're using a European printer at 72
  114.                              characters per line), switch to condensed
  115.                              mode first!
  116.                            - If you're using a duplex printer (ie: a
  117.                              printer capable of printing both sides of
  118.                              each sheet such as the HP LJ 3d), put your
  119.                              printer in 'duplex mode' prior to printing!
  120.                            - There are approximately 326 pages!! Make
  121.                              certain you have enough paper!
  122.  
  123. Magnum BBS comes in a variety of configurations. The version numbers on
  124. your diskette reveals the configuration you have:
  125.  
  126.     M.mmTnn
  127.     | | ||____ nn = number of nodes (nn = your 'local' (console) node).
  128.     | | |_____  T = Type (A=Alpha, B=Beta, C=Commercial, D=Demo)
  129.     | |_______ mm = minor revision number
  130.     |_________  M = major revision number

  132.     Example:  8.07D2 means you have version 8.07, Demo release, and
  133.               node 2 is your local (console) node... all other nodes
  134.               are dialup nodes.
  135.  
  136. In  addition  to  providing  'dialup'  (modem)  support;  Magnum BBS can
  137. support "pipe" nodes on your LAN.  This demo release includes DEMO  pipe
  138. modules (refer to  file PIPES.ZIP on  the distribution diskette).   Some
  139. companies use  Magnum BBS  as a  LAN-based BBS  with some,  many, or all
  140. nodes configured  as "pipe"  rather than  modem.   The pipe  modules are
  141. available in OS/2 and  DOS flavors and work  with any LAN software  that
  142. supports "named pipes" (ie:  IBM LanServer, MS LanManager, Banyan Vines,
  143. Novell Netware, etc).   NOTE:   Pipe modules are  NOT included with  the
  144. commercial release, they are available for purchase separately; the DEMO
  145. pipe modules are non-functional with the commercial release.

  154. If you're running a previous  DEMO version of Magnum (5.02D2, 6.00D2 or
  155. 7.00D2), you may install version  8.07D2 by running the intelligent
  156. installation program supplied on the version 8.07D2 distribution diskette
  157. (you 'make' the distribution  diskette by  copying ALL  files within
  158. this .ZIP file that you downloaded to a high-density floppy diskette).

  160.            NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
  161.                  HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
  162.                  (MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!

  164. To  install  Magnum  BBS  version  8.07D2  over a previous DEMO version,
  165. follow these simple instructions:
  166.  
  167.     0) Back Up your PGM_DIR, EXT_DIR, RJE_DIR and SES_DIR
  168.        ===>>> THIS STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP YOU CAN TAKE!!
  169.               IF YOU DO NOT PERFORM THIS STEP, WE CANNOT PROVIDE
  170.               TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN THE EVENT SOMETHING GOES WRONG!!
  171.        ===>>> IF YOU CALL FOR HELP, THE *FIRST* THING WE'LL ASK YOU
  172.               TO DO IS TO RESTORE FROM YOUR BACKUP!!

  174.     1) Insert the Magnum BBS version 8.07D2 diskette in your A: or B:
  175.        diskette drive.
  176.  
  177.     2) At an OS/2 command prompt (OS/2 fullscreen or window), switch to
  178.        your PGM_DIR (the directory where MBBS.EXE and MSESSION.EXE are
  179.        located).
  180.  
  181.     3) Making sure you are on the drive and in the PGM_DIR that your BBS
  182.        is located in, enter one of the following commands:
  183.  
  184.            A:\MAGINST.EXE
  185.        or
  186.            B:\MAGINST.EXE
  187.  
  188.        depending on whether the Magnum distribution diskette is in your
  189.        A: or B: diskette drive.
  190.  
  191.     4) Upon completion of the intelligent installation program, restart
  192.        your BBS!
  193.  
  194.     5) Log on as the Sysop and change your PHONE1 parm to that of your
  195.        main BBS telephone number.
