Fidonet Internet Ftp Tunnel
Ver 0.4b
Dated: 6th Jan 1996
A Freeware for the BBS community.
by Alok Sinha, India.
*****************************************************************************
Introduction :
---------------
I run a BBS network in the largest democracy in the world - India. My
BBS network is spread across more than 2500 miles, and we have 8 nodes
catering to more than 9000 users acsross the country.
In the absence of Private Internet service Providers, it was difficult
for us do Fidonet type of communication through Internet, and relied
mostly on long distance calls. which was both, expensive as well as
unreliable.
Fidtun, is designed to fulfil this very need, where BBS nodes can transfer
fidonet packets using the Internet as a tunnel. The protocol used here is
primarily Ftp.
How does it work :
------------------
FidTun, picks up the mail packet meant for a particular node, and compresses
them into one packet, thereafter it transfers this file to the remote host
through Ftp. On the remote host, if there exists a file of similar name, the
file is renamed to an older version.
to receive the files, FidTun, collects the mail meant for your system,
from a particular directory. downloads the files to the local inbound
directory and unzips it to creat mail packets, thereafter you can run
your normal toss commands.
System Requirements :
---------------------
a. OS/2 Warp 4. with TCP/IP 4.0. I have not tested it on Connect
yet, but i think it shud work on connect with the TCP/IP
version 4. rxftp.dll should be in the current directory or
in your lib path.
b. An Ftp host on a TCP/IP connection.
c. Info-zip zip.exe and unzip.exe
d. On the bbs front, it has been tested with Imail mail processor,
but it shud run well with other systems as well.
Installation
-------------
Unzip the contents of the package in one directory.
Open the FidTun.cmd file, and edit the section which says, user configuration,
to suit your system requirements.
Next, on the Ftp host, create a common file exhcange area, and separate
home directories for each of the nodes, that may be on the site.
eg.
/home/alok/008
/home/alok/031
/home/alok/026
are the directories made in my home directory for 6:606/8, 31 and 26.
Setup your TCP/IP connection with your local service provider, and once
the TCP/IP connection is established launch FidTun.cmd program.
Limitaions:
----------
1. Currently, works for hosts within one zone only. Am working
on the inclusion of other domain names as well.
2. Can hold only upto 999 polls in the spool
3. Extend compatibility for other mail processors as well.
Tomorrow ?
----------
1. Support for multiple domains
2. In built support for simultaneous transfers for
multiple nodes.
3. Separate config file.
4. To work on shell type of account also.
Support
-------
