  4. The starship orbiting around the fifth planet looked like a 
  5. derelict.  The hull was pitted and scarred by laser fire and 
  6. antimatter torpedoes; no lights were shining from the command 
  7. bridge, and the shield generator dish was crumpled like a paper 
  8. airplane that had landed underfoot.  The ship was listing and 
  9. spinning slowly in a way that few manned spacecraft ever did.

  11. Captain Archer just had to hope that the ruse would work.  He knew 
  12. that the X'xin would be back -- they needed the precious minerals in 
  13. this system even more after the firefight that left his ship in 
  14. this condition -- and he knew, too, that his ship couldn't withstand 
  15. another assault.  If he could just get the X'xin to lower shields for 
  16. a moment or two to scan the wreckage, or attempt to board...
  17.  
  18. "Captain," the Ensign on duty whispered hoarsely, as if she were 
  19. afraid her voice would carry through space.  "I'm picking up an 
  20. incoming vessel on visual."
  21.  
  22. Archer sighed.  "I'd ask for a detailed scan, but with main power 
  23. shut down, I guess that'd be a little unfair.  Buckle your seat 
  24. belts, folks.  We may be in for a rough ride...."
