You are currently entering or adding to a story entry using
a full-screen ANSI text editor. This editor allows you to
move around freely and add or modify text. The editor will
hold up to fifty lines of text; if you are at the bottom line
of the window but you aren't yet at line 50, hitting the Enter
key will cause the window to scroll down.
Here are some important "Action Keys" that work in the editor:
Esc Calls up a menu that you can use to (S)ave the text
you're working on, (A)bort (quit without saving), or
(R)edraw the screen if it gets messed up.
Tab If you are adding to a story that was already started,
you will see a red window containing the original
story hidden behind the blue editor window. You can
use the Tab key to bring the original story window to
the foreground so that you can remind yourself about
what other people wrote.
For most popular terminal programs, you should be able to
move around freely using the normal arrow keys, plus Backspace
and Delete. The Home key will take you to the beginning of the
current line; the End key will take you to the end of the
current line. If the editor doesn't respond properly when you
hit the cursor keys, try putting your terminal in what may be
called "Raw Mode" or "Doorway (tm) Mode." (Two other useful
keys, PgUp and PgDn, are only supported in Raw/Doorway mode.)
Two important notes:
1. The editor will not let you use the Down Arrow key when you
are already at the bottom of the text. If you want to add
blank lines at the end of the text, use the Enter key.
2. If you are using the arrow keys on the Numeric Keypad, make
sure that the Num Lock Key is turned OFF! Otherwise, your
computer will send numbers out through the modem, and you
will end up with silly numbers in your document.
Several "hot keys" will work at just about any time while
you are in Fiction Factory.
Ctrl-Z Brings up help. As much as possible, FictFact will
tailor the help it provides to what you're doing
at the time, so if you're confused, give it a try!
Ctrl-O Lists the people (if any) who are in the game on
other nodes. You may want to send those people
messages, to chat with them, or to work on a story
together so that you can take turns adding to the tale.
Ctrl-E Allows you to enter a one-line message to a user on
another node.
Ctrl-T Allows you to enter chat mode. From there, you can
/PAGE people on other nodes to chat with you.
