  4. Version 1.07 Marks The Beginning Of The NEW MANAGEMENT Of AdeptSoft

  8. This version (1.07) is a milestone in AdeptSoft's brief history.
  9.  
  10. We have a new President (John Morris) and a new Chief Technology
  11. Officer (Gordon Zeglinski). As you may have heard, Steven Tower,
  12. one of the four founding partners, is no longer an active partner
  13. in Adeptsoft.
  14.  
  15. 1.07 is the first release firmly in the capable hands of John
  16. Morris and Gordon Zeglinski with the ever watchful eyes and
  17. input of the Wizards of Adept. We finally have a www.adeptsoft.com
  18. Web site (under construction... of course) and the Support BBS has
  19. been moved up to Indiana into the very capable hands of
  20. Julie Strietelmeier, our Head of Technical Support.
  21.  
  22. AdeptSoft is firmly committed to making AdeptXBBS the best 32-bit
  23. BBS product on the market. We are committed to quality, timely
  24. customer support and a rapid resolution of reproduceable bugs.
  25.  
  26. In the past, there have been too many unkept promises made
  27. by this company. If you feel you were promised something by
  28. someone at AdeptSoft and have not seen results, please
  29. contact me (jlawlor@adeptsoft.com). We will do our best
  30. to deliver on unfulfilled promises.

  42. A great deal of work has gone into AdeptXBBS 1.07 to clear up issues
  43. that have been talked about in the various echos. Some issues have
  44. been long standing, others crept into release 1.06 of the program.
  45.  
  46. Many, many bugs have been looked at, re-created, and we have made
  47. fixes to correct these bugs. We have tested these bugs, but not all
  48. scenarios get re-created during testing, so something may have
  49. gotten by us. A list of the major bugs that have been worked on will
  50. be included in this document, along with a list of known bugs which
  51. we have not attempted any fixes on. If you see a bug in the list of
  52. 'bugs we have fixed' that still does not work on your system, fill
  53. out a bug report, and send it in. We will take action on it.
  54.  
  55. Concerning bug reporting. If you have found a bug in any of the
  56. software released by AdeptSoft. Please take the time to fill out
  57. a bug report and send it in. We are working hard on fixing bugs
  58. which have been reported. When reporting a bug, give us as much
  59. relevant information as possible, including any files which may
  60. have been contributing factors in the problem. Keep the following
  61. in mind when reporting a problem:
  62.  
  63. "Gather enough information and the solution will be obvious"
  64.  
  65. In other words, if we have a clear, concise record of what happened,
  66. we can generally fix the bug in a very short amount of time.
  67.  
  68. Your bug matters to us!!
  69.  
  70. Please keep in mind, we have a dedicated group of volunteer SysOps
  71. who can also help you out with your problem. This group is known
  72. as the The Wizards of Adept.  I'd also like to thank our spirited
  73. Beta Testers... they spend their time searching out bugs so our
  74. other customers won't have to be surprised.

  76. AdeptXBBS version 1.07 is distributed as a limited trial edition.
  77. It allows all features of the BBS software to be tested on 1 line
  78. until May 31st, 1996. (The Internet module is not part of the base
  79. product and is not included in the trial edition.)
  80. After this date, the program will no longer process calls.
  81. Registered users will not be effected by this May 31, 1996 cut off.

  83. Starting March 15th we will be releasing weekly updates with tweeks
  84. and bug fixes. Please look for 1.07a on March 15th.

  86. The volume of traffic on our ftp site (ftp.adeptsoft.com) has been
  87. exceeding our bandwidth... so please look for the latest version
  88. on hobbes.nmsu.edu in the incoming OS2 directory. We will upload
  89. it there first.

  106. As the release of 1.07, AdeptSoft will no longer charge a transfer
  107. fee to transfer a license to another individual. We will only
  108. charge the $50.00 transfer fee to corporate buyers.

  116. AdeptSoft today announced the formation of The Wizards of Adept,
  117. an independent AdeptXBBS Sysop group led by Julie Strietelmeier,
  118. head of AdeptXBBS Tech Support.

  120. John Morris, Senior VP, Software Engineering continued, 
  121. "In a world of FidoNet 'standards' that are seldom 'standard',
  122. the Wizards will also provide an independent point of view 
  123. to establish which feature requests are necessary to be added 
  124. to AdeptXBBS."
  125.  
  126. "The Wizards were formed as a way of creating better communication 
  127. with AdeptXBBS Sysops. By validating bugs and evaluating FidoNet
  128. feature requests, the Wizards bring a strong Sysop perspective
  129. to decisions that are traditionally left completely to a product's
  130. developers. The result will be a company that is responsive to the 
  131. industry needs, not just to the 'squeeky wheels' that shout loudly 
  132. when their personal 'feature' is not supported," added John Lawlor, 
  133. CEO of AdeptSoft. "The Wizards have been instructed to 'kick us in 
  134. the backside' if they feel that we are not listening."

  143. The Wizard group is closed and there will be no additions in the 
  144. forseable future.

  146. The Wizards are paid a commission on new sales-- they are rewarded 
  147. for helping to make the product better and more stable.

  149. Why were these people chosen?
  150. Julie Strietelmeier is an active and vocal AdeptXBBS 
  151. Sysop in addition to being our head of AdeptXBBS Tech Support.
  152. The other Wizards are long time Sysops and valued Beta testers. 
  153. Each has consistantly provided excellent feedback and shown 
  154. long term interest that has helped us to improve the product.

  156. How to communicate with the Wizards?
  157.  
  158. All tech support questions and communications will continue to 
  159. be handled by Julie Strietelmeier (support@adeptsoft.com).
  160. The other Wizards will continue to participate in the 
  161. echos and IRC at their own discretion but will not be
  162. answering questions to tech support. Tech Support questions
  163. will be continue to be answered by Julie.

  165. Julie Strietelmeier emphasized that "The only way to ensure
  166. that a bug gets the treatment that it deserves is to 
  167. fill_out_a _bug-report_ completely and e-mail it to
  168. julies@adeptsoft.com.

  171. The Wizards provide excellent support. Seek them out.

  174. Okay, let's list some of the bugs we have worked in the 1.07 release.
  175.  
  176. Due to some quirks in OS2, AdeptXBBS and its utilities encountered
  177. problems that less multi-threaded programs would never see.  These
  178. problems were generally seen as a sporadic failure of programs to
  179. work, which could not be recreated very easily.  We were bitten by
  180. this problem in several ways. First, the C compiler was doing things
  181. it should not have been doing.  We had to use special debugging
  182. programs to determine that this was the case. We had to write some
  183. of our own C library routines to counter these problems shown by the
  184. C compiler. Next, some items in OS2 work on a 'per process' basis
  185. (in other words, when you run Adept.Exe, it is one process), while
  186. in most of our program we need to deal with things on a per thread
  187. basis (threads are little program units running inside Adept.Exe).
  188. We had to do some more programming to make sure that we tricked
  189. OS2 into thinking we were doing things on the 'process' level,
  190. when we are actually doing it at the 'thread' level. For the most
  191. part, this clears up intermittent failures of Adepts child programs.
  192.  
  193. NNTP mail has been extensively reworked. It has been under large
  194. test loads for 8 weeks now, and works far better in this release.
  195. This reworking has resulted in incompatibilities between the NNTP
  196. config files with the previous version of adept.
  197. EXISTING NNTP CONFIG FILES NEED TO BE DELETED and new ones built.
  198. Please delete all files in the \Adept\UseNet directory.
  199. We apologize for the inconvience but this change will allow us to
  200. reduce the memory requirements of NNTP in the next release.
  201.  
  202. The Ring No Answer bug has been found. It was stated somewhere that 
  203. this bug was in someone elses software. This was false. The bug was
  204. in AdeptXBBS, it was tracked down and a fix applied.
  205.  
  206. Offline mail has always been a trouble area. Certain portions
  207. worked correctly, others were lacking sorely. Work has been done
  208. on all 4 types of offline mail that are supported internally by
  209. AdeptXBBS. They include QWK, Bluewave, Plain Text, and Fido Point
  210. mail.   QWK mail and Bluewave mail were further along technologically
  211. than Text, or Fido mail for no apparent reason. All four are
  212. currently at the same level of functionality. You should experience
  213. fewer problems with offline mail in all areas, whether it be
  214. downloading or uploading mail packets.
  215.  
  216. PMI Indexing has been reworked. Its design is lackluster in the
  217. first place, and did not provide the complete functionality it
  218. should have. The design now should help eliminate problems such
  219. as, when reading messages from a message menu, and the message is
  220. in the PMI index, that record in the PMI index is eliminated so
  221. that the user is not shown a message they have already read. The
  222. same goes for offline mail. If the user downloads a packet with a
  223. message which is listed in the PMI index, that PMI record is
  224. deleted.  PMI indexing should work whether the message is sent
  225. to the users real name or the handle they have chosen.

  227. Chat between nodes was leaking memory in a bad way in 1.06. Even
  228. worse than prior versions. We have changed some basic philosophy
  229. in the chat area, and have made tests of the chat code on various
  230. systems, and the memory leak appears to have been greatly reduced,
  231. if not eliminated.
  232.  
  233. Picking a offline mail type in the user editor worked in a very
  234. odd fashion. This has been worked on and should reflect the
  235. correct info.
  236.  
  237. AdeptXBBS would try to kill an Upload test if the user dropped
  238. carrier. This behavior has been changed.
  239.  
  240. There were some problems in the internet configuration dialog box.
  241. Namely sudden exits of the program if someone really fiddled with
  242. the buttons.
  243.  
  244. If you make a node inactive. You should now be able to use the com
  245. port on that node.
  246.  
  247. The user group editor would hose the groups file when saving.
  248.  
  249. There are many more bugs that have been worked on. Please see how
  250. the program works for you!

  254. Now, here is a small list of bugs that we are aware of, but have not
  255. been able to spend time on, but will do so as time permits:
  256.  
  257. FTS-0001 sessions have been worked on and are generally usable.
  258. Also, FTS-0007 (sealink xfers) were rechecked to make sure they
  259. follow the fido state tables. Sealink transfers should also work
  260. better. Things to keep in mind, the NO 1K packets option is turned
  261. on by default. Leave it on. 1K packets are not tested.  File
  262. resumption is apparently still not 100%.
  263.  
  264. File ratios may not be working properly.
  265.  
  266. Possible problems with XMSG that have been reported, but not in
  267. every case recreated.
  268.  
  269. Passworded mailer sessions don't always work as planned.
  270.  
  271. There are many more bugs reported which we will be spending time
  272. on in the near future.
  273.  
  274. Please note: We will be going to a much quicker release schedule
  275. starting with version 1.07. We will release updates to 1.07 on a
  276. weekly basis. This will start on March 15th, and a release will
  277. occur each Friday. These release will be to 1.07. And will be
  278. numbered like so:  1.07a,  1.07b, etc.  These will contain more
  279. bug fixes, done in a timely manner. If you see a bunch of release,
  280. but you are not experiencing difficulty with your copy of Adept,
  281. you probably will not need any of these extra updates.
