wide, but it isn't necessary to enter that many characters.

Adept can't find your name as entered in the user list.  If you've
logged on before (and recently), perhaps you made a typo?  In any
event, if you're sure you entered your name correctly (don't knee-
jerk, take a look), hit 'Y', or hit 'N' to reenter your name if
you did make a mistake typing it.

>>Yes or no

Touch your 'Y' key for yes or your 'N' key for No.  You'll usually be
presented with a default response which will be used if you just press
the [Enter] key.  It's the uppercase letter in parentheses.  For
instance, if the prompt reads "Are you sure? (Y/n) ", the default
answer is 'Y'es if you just press [Enter]; you'd need to specifically
press 'N' to answer No.

>>Password

Enter the password you previously told Adept you wanted to use.  Remember
that passwords are CaSe SeNsItIvE (upper and lower case are different).

Characters other than the ones you have type will appear on the screen
to help you determine how many characters you have type. Your password
is not shown for security reasons.

You are being presented with a list of related topics.  Select one if you
need more help.

>>Personal Check

Adept is checking to see if you have any new personal mail.  There are new
messages (not necessarily personal) in this area.  Adept now wants to know
if you want to [C]heck this area for personal messages, [S]kip this area,
check this area and all others [N]onstop (without redisplaying this prompt
for each area containing new messages), or [A]bort the check altogether.

If you're trying to insert a "blank" line, [C]ontinue, enter one space,
then press [Enter].  Pressing [Enter] on a truly blank line gets you
here.

I'd suggest you get off your duff and do something...

Enter the year you were born as a 4-digit number (i.e. 1970, not just 70).

Adept wants to know your mailing address.  This information isn't used
for anything in particular, and isn't revealed to other users at all
unless you have told Adept to do so.  Nevertheless, the information is
required. Please include the complete address; this system gets
international calls, so "32 Bleeker St." means next to nothing. You have
up to three lines to enter your address.

Adept wants to know what your phone number is.  This information isn't
used for much of anything, and isn't revealed to other users unless
you've told Adept to do so.  This information is required.  Please give
the complete phone number; this system receives international calls, so
"4244224" means next to nothing.

>>User Password

Enter the password you want to use on this system.  This field is 12
characters wide, but only 3 are required for a valid password (though
more are suggested!).  A password is best if it's composed of random
alphanumeric characters.  Remember that passwords are CaSe SeNsItIvE
(upper and lower case are different).

Your password is your key to the system.  It's your responsibility to
remember and protect it.  Failure to live up to this responsibility
could lead to the loss of your account.

You can hit [Enter] without entering anything to get Adept to make a
password for you.  These are randomly generated and just about
impossible for anyone else to guess.  They're also hard to remember,
so write them down somewhere.

Random characters will echo.

Adept stores only a representation of your password. So if you forget
your password, the SysOp will not be able to tell you what it is.

Repeat your password so that I can be sure you typed what you think you
typed.  Random characters will echo.

Here's your opportunity to enter a "handle" or pseudonym to use on some
areas of the system.  It isn't required that you use a handle; your real
name will work fine.

Should Adept show your address to other users?  Answer 'Y' if you want your

Should Adept show your phone number to other users?  Answer 'Y' if you want
your phone number to be shown.

Adept wants to know if you want to have ANSI cursor movement sequences
sent to your terminal.  ANSI is a protocol (available on most IBM PCs
and clones via the ANSI.SYS driver and on several other computers via
terminal emulation) that allows some fancier things to be done on your
screen.  Adept uses ANSI for positioning purposes if it finds you have
it at logon or turn it on here, but doesn't send color unless you
specifically turn it on.  Don't turn this on unless your terminal
supports ANSI emulation!  You'll just get garbage.

0-127 (ASCII) range.  The high-bit characters used by Adept are meant to
be displayed from the IBM PC/clone character set.  Answer 'Y' if you want
these "graphics" characters to be sent, or 'N' to have them "filtered."

If you have Novice mode on, you will be presented with a brief list of
available options at many prompts automatically.  Without it, '?' at
command prompts will still get you the option list.

If you have Expert mode on, Adept will *not* present a list of the valid
keys at prompts.  Without it, you'll get a list of valid keys between
square brackets [].

>>User Rolling

Adept prompts are normally of the "rolling" variety that let you "scroll"
through the available options using your cursor keys or numeric keypad.
Answer 'N' here if you want to turn the roll off.

>>User Pause

Adept normally pauses at the end of a screen page to let you read.  Enter
'N' here (not recommended) if you don't want Adept to pause.

>>User Hot

Adept normally processes keystrokes to single-key commands without requiring
that you press the [Enter] key afterward.  This can be a problem if you have
a high degree of line noise (a bad connection).  Enter 'N' to turn off "hot"
keys and be able to press [Enter] before a command is activated in most
cases.

>>User Clear

Adept sometimes clears your screen of old data before displaying new data.
Enter 'N' here if you don't want Adept to ever clear your screen.

>>User Width

Adept wants to know how many columns you have across your screen.  This value
is usually 80, but is sometimes 32 (Color Computers), 40 (C=64) or 64
(Apple).

Enter the number of columns on your screen.  Take the time to count them if
necessary.

Adept wants to know how many rows you have vertically on your screen.  Be sure
to allow for any status lines your terminal uses.  This value is usually 24.

the type of computer you use.  Other users can use this to find people with
similar hardware.

Allows setting of four "fine-tuning" parameters.  See related topics for

Enter a year and Adept will print a calendar of that year for you (within
reasonable limits :-).  You might want to turn on your logfile to capture
the output.

>>Lib Mask

The "mask" Adept is asking for is used to select the filenames to display.
This is a "standard" DOS filespec, with "?" and "*" wildcards allowed.
"?" matches any one character, and "*" matches any series of characters
(up to the "." delimiter).  The default mask "*.*" will match all files,
displaying a complete list.

>>Lib Read

Enter the filenames of the documents you want to read.  Wildcards are not
allowed here, but you can enter multiple filenames separated by a space.
The files will be read sequentially.

>>MsgArea Selection

You are being asked to select a new "current" message area.  You may enter
the area's name or number as shown on the list of areas (you get the list
by typing "?" and hitting [Enter]).  If you don't want to change your
current area, just hit [Enter] without entering anything else.

You can use these commands to turn file areas on and off, creating a
custom setup for yourself.
