  3. README                        Omega Point/2 Bulletin Board System

  6. This file details specific instructions and information on
  7. features that may have been changed or added since your manual
  8. was printed.

  12. Installation and Setup Instructions
  13. -----------------------------------------------------------------

  15. The distribution diskette is divided into three parts. The base
  16. system consists of all the files on the root directory of the
  17. diskette; the developers kit and example files are contained in
  18. the directory '\DEV'; and the menu, message, and MCF files are
  19. contained in the directory '\MNU'.
  20.  
  21. To install the system, simply enter the command "A:INSTALL" (or
  22. B:INSTALL if you are installing from your B: drive).
  23.  
  24. The install program will first ask you for a destination drive.
  25. Next, it will copy all the files in the root directory of the
  26. distribution diskette to a directory called '\RUNBBS' on the
  27. destination drive. After the base system is copies, the menu and
  28. message files will be copied. These files are only copied if you
  29. are installing the system for the first time. If you wish to
  30. update selective files, you will need to copy them manually.
  31. Finally, the install program asks if you wish to copy the
  32. developers toolkit. If you answer 'Yes', the files will be copied
  33. to the directory '\RUNBBS\DEV' on the destination drive.
  34.  
  35. After copying the required files, the install program creates the
  36. directories the system will need. The directories created are as
  37. follows: 'DN1', 'DN2', 'EMAIL', 'ETC', 'MESSAGES', 'USERS'.

  39. NOTICE!!! If you are installing Omega Point/2 as an update, you
  40. will want to back up any menu files that you have changed. Files
  41. that will be overwritten when the update is installed are *.MCF,
  42. *.MSG and *.ANS. Copy these files to a temporary directory before
  43. installing the update.

  49. November 1, 1990. Version 0.8:
  50.  
  51.     o  First public release!

  53. November 11, 1990. Version 0.8a:
  54.  
  55.     o  Two new MCF functions added. Function "MESSQUICKNEW" can
  56.        be called from within the MESSMNU.MCF. It scans each
  57.        message forum, reading each "new" message. After reading
  58.        all new messages in a forum, the user is asked if he or
  59.        she would like to post a new message.
  60.  
  61.     o  Function "MESSSCANCONFIG" was added. This function allows
  62.        the user to customize which of the active forums are
  63.        scanned when MESSQUICKNEW is selected.
  64.  
  65.     o  A bug that caused the DOBBS.CMD batch file not to
  66.        correctly recognize when the BBS was terminated by a
  67.        BBSSEND request was fixed.
  68.  
  69.     o  The BBS may now be automatically terminated on a regular
  70.        basis. To do so, add the command line option "-s time" to
  71.        the line that executes BBS.EXE in DOBBS.CMD. 'time' should
  72.        be a 24 hour representation. For example, "0300" would
  73.        terminate the BBS at 3am. DOBBS.CMD skips to a special
  74.        section when the BBS is terminated this way. You may use
  75.        this to do any system specific backup or simply as a way
  76.        to reset the system daily. Users are given a 5 minute
  77.        warning before the system terminates.
  78.  
  79.     o  Another new MCF Function was added, "SYSOPRESET". This
  80.        function causes the BBS to terminate 2 minutes after the
  81.        function is executed. The DOBBS.CMD batch file will,
  82.        however, automatically restart the BBS. This function can
  83.        be used by remote sysops to perform a software reset.
  84.  
  85.     o  An option has been added to the SETUP menu. Option number
  86.        14 allows the SysOp to determine if messages are
  87.        registered as new based on when the user was last in the
  88.        forum or by the last message number the user read in that
  89.        forum. The default is by message number.
  90.  
  91.     o  A status line has been added to the bottom of the SysOp
  92.        status screen. The line shows the number of pages sent,
  93.        number of logins, number of users currently online, and
  94.        the number of messages sent. These numbers are for the
  95.        current invocation of the system only, and are reset when
  96.        the system is restarted.

  98. December 1, 1990. Version 0.8b:
  99.  
  100.     o  Added global commands. Global commands may be used from
  101.        nearly any prompt on the system. This includes the editor,
  102.        teleconference, chat, menu prompts, and external programs.
  103.        Global commands do not work at any prompt that takes more
  104.        then 1 word for input. For example, the "message subject"
  105.        prompt. (Programmers: this means any prompt that uses
  106.        SerGetStr() to collect it's input). It also will not work
  107.        from within external programs that do not use the BBS API
  108.        library (CZARWARS, for example). The following commands
  109.        are implemented: "/p" to page a user, "/w" to show who is
  110.        online, "/t" to show time online and time remaining, and
  111.        "/off" to log off the system.
  112.  
  113.     o  Fixed a bug in teleconference that caused users to be
  114.        "uninvited" from a room they had not yet entered at
  115.        seemingly random times.
  116.  
  117.     o  Added features to teleconference so that SysOps may use
  118.        the "/m" command for forcefully moderate a room. Also, a
  119.        SysOp may now use the "/i" command in a room, regardless
  120.        of whether or not they own that room.

  122. December 10, 1990. Version 0.8c:
  123.  
  124.     o  Added new option to the SETUP menu. The new option allows
  125.        the SysOp to set the minutes a user must wait between
  126.        calls. If the user calls before this time has elapsed,
  127.        he/she will not be allowed on the system.

  129.     o  Added another new option to the SETUP menu. The option
  130.        allows you to specify the level at which a user is
  131.        considered "verified". Any user with an access level equal
  132.        to or above the verified level is said to be a verified
  133.        user. Verified users have only one benifit over non-
  134.        verified users; their name appears in the recent caller
  135.        log. When a non-verified user uses the system, "NEWUSER"
  136.        is placed in the log.
  137.  
  138.     o  The MCF function 'CONMESSAGE' now beeps when a message is
  139.        sent.
  140.  
  141.     o  When an E-Mail or public message is sent to an invisible
  142.        user, the user sending the message is no longer told that
  143.        the receiving user has been notified. However, the
  144.        receiving user will receive a page anyway.

  147. March 28, 1991.  Version 0.9:
  148.  
  149.     o  The USER, MESSAGE, and FILE databases have been improved.
  150.        Each subsystem now uses the same base database functions.
  151.        This was done to improve performance, maintainibility,
  152.        accessibility, and reliability. The database functions
  153.        have been removed from the main executable and placed in a
  154.        new DLL, called BBSDB.DLL. For programmers, there are
  155.        three new class of BBS API functions (Udb, Mdb and Fdb).
  156.        The new classes are not documented here, contact ExcelSoft
  157.        if you would like to write expansion modules that use
  158.        these functions. Notice: because of the extensive changes
  159.        to the database system the user, file and message systems
  160.        from previous versions will no longer work with the
  161.        system.
  162.  
  163.     o  Global commands have been removed from the main executable
  164.        and placed in a new DLL, called BBSGLOB.DLL.
  165.  
  166.     o  The source code for BBSGLOB.DLL has been made public.
  167.        Global commands may be changed or added. The only
  168.        restrictions are that the functions that are included with
  169.        the system must remain (since they are called by name from
  170.        the main BBS), but the functionality may be changed. The
  171.        source code is in the 'DEV' directory - see BBSGLOB.C,
  172.        BBSGLOB.H and BBSGLOB.MAK.
  173.  
  174.     o  The command line syntax for each of the BBS utilities has
  175.        been changed to be more consistent. Options are now case
  176.        sensitive and the '=' is no longer used. The new syntax is
  177.        consistent with the UNIX command line format.
  178.  
  179.     o  USERLIST.EXE has been updated. Lists may now be sorted by
  180.        many different fields of the user record by using the '-s
  181.        [field]' option. Type 'USERLIST -h' for a complete
  182.        description.
  183.  
  184.     o  MESSPACK.EXE has been updated to allow the renumbering of
  185.        messages. This is supported with the '-r' option. Type
  186.        'MESSPACK -h' for a complete description.
  187.  
  188.     o  FILEPACK.EXE has been updated to include a new "check"
  189.        option. This option will check the specified file
  190.        section(s) and search for files that are in the database
  191.        but do not exist, or files that exist but are not entered
  192.        in the database. Type 'FILEPACK -h' for a complete
  193.        description.

  195.     o  A new file called 'INVALID.BBS' is now packaged with the
  196.        system. This file allows the sysop to specify certain
  197.        handles or strings within handles that are considered
  198.        "inappropriate". Strings are entered in the file, one per
  199.        line. If the first character of the line is a '*', the
  200.        follow text may not appear in a handle. Otherwise, only
  201.        handles that match the exact text will be discarded.
  202.  
  203.     o  The "Users Online" display now shows "-Newuser-" for any
  204.        user who is below the "User Verified Level" instead of the
  205.        user's normal information. SysOps will still see the
  206.        normal information, but an 'n' will be displayed in the
  207.        flag field.

  209.     o  Electronic Mail bug fixed that caused the message "no more
  210.        messages" to be displayed even when messages remained in
  211.        the user's box.
  212.  
  213.     o  Intelligence has been added to the "last message read"
  214.        counter so that if you delete the message files for a
  215.        particular forum, the next time the user enters the forum,
  216.        his counter will be reset to the beginning. This bug
  217.        caused problems for those wishing to quickly clear a
  218.        message forum.
  219.  
  220.     o  A teleconference bug has been fixed that allowed clever
  221.        users to turn off the anonymous flag at the right time to
  222.        see who said what.

  224.     o  Several other small bugs and improvements have been
  225.        addressed.
  226.  
  227.     o  We would also like to announce the opening of the Omega
  228.        Point/2 support BBS. Ideas, announcements, and public
  229.        domain add-on modules will be posted. Call us at
  230.        404-564-1961. We're open 24 hours a day with a 9600 bps
  231.        HST/V.32 modem.

  234. July 7th, 1991.  Version 0.9a:

  236.     o  Omega Point/2 two line version released in Shareware form.
  237.  
  238.     o  Internet mail supported for registered users. To allow
  239.        Internet mail on your system, first install version 0.9a
  240.        of Omega Point/2. Next, download the Internet package from
  241.        the Omega Point/2 support BBS (404-564-1961) and install
  242.        it. Next, enter the "setup" menu on your system, select
  243.        option number 18 to allow Internet mail. Users may now,
  244.        from the E-Mail section, enter message addresses in the
  245.        Internet format, i.e. "system!john". Follow the rest of
  246.        the instructions included with the Internet package to set
  247.        up a UUCP link.

  249.     o  Other minor bugs fixed and minor cosmetic changes made.
