  5. Welcome to Maximus!
  6.  
  7. The version 2.0 distribution kit consists of four parts.  Please ensure
  8. that you have all of the files required to install Maximus under your
  9. operating system:
  10.  
  11.         DOS version     OS/2 version
  12.         ────────────    ────────────
  13.         MAX200-1.LZH    MAX200P1.LZH
  14.         MAX200-2.LZH    MAX200P2.LZH
  15.         MAX200-3.LZH    MAX200-3.LZH \ MAX200-3 and MAX200-4 are shared
  16.         MAX200-4.LZH    MAX200-4.LZH / for both DOS and OS/2.

  18. (The archives may have been repacked with ARJ, PAK, ZIP, or some other
  19. archive type.)  However, you need all four files before you can begin
  20. the installation.

  22. To install Maximus, you must first unLZH all of the MAX*.LZH files
  23. into a work directory.  After everything is extracted, please print
  24. out and read both this file and MAX_OP.PRN.  This readme only
  25. contains a few essentials; for a complete guide to installing Max,
  26. you should see the "Installation" section of MAX_OP.PRN.

  32. Once all of the LZH files have been extracted, run the INSTALL
  33. program.  INSTALL is a dual-mode program which can be run under either
  34. DOS or OS/2.  If you wish to run the OS/2 version of Maximus, you must
  35. run INSTALL from an OS/2 command prompt.  Similarly, if you wish to
  36. run the DOS version of Maximus, INSTALL must be run from the DOS
  37. prompt.

  39. INSTALL will ask you a few questions, decompress the *.FIZ archives,
  40. perform the initial system configuration, and then exit to the
  41. operating system.  At that point, your system is ready to run in local
  42. mode. Again, for more information on completing the installation,
  43. please see MAX_OP.PRN.

  45. Under permission from Unique Computing Pty, the BNU FOSSIL driver is
  46. included in the Max DOS distribution archive.  If you're a new user of
  47. the DOS version, you'll need such a FOSSIL to handle remote callers.
  48. (Other FOSSILs will work, but BNU is one of the fastest.)  The
  49. inclusion of BNU in the Maximus archives does not convey any rights to
  50. you; terms of usage for the BNU package is covered separately in
  51. BNU.DOC.

  57. If you're upgrading from Max 1.02, please print out and read
  58. CONVERT.PRN before proceeding.  This file contains essential
  59. information on performing the upgrade, and you'll miss a lot of new
  60. features without it.

  66. 1) If you're using a monochrome monitor, a black-and-white colour
  67.    configuration is available.  Although the distribution version of
  68.    Max looks nice on colour monitors, some features (such as the
  69.    pop-up windows) may be unreadable on mono systems.  To solve this
  70.    problem, after running through the installation program, type "COPY
  71.    COLOURS.B&W COLOURS.CTL" at the prompt, and then run SILT.  This
  72.    tells Max to use colours which are more pleasant on a mono system.

  74. 2) Before beginning the installation, you should have at least 4
  75.    megabytes of free disk space.  The files unpacked from MAX*.LZH
  76.    will occupy around 1.5 megs.  In additional, 2 megabytes are
  77.    required to decompress the *.FIZ files into the appropriate
  78.    directories.

  80.    After Maximus has been installed, all of the *.FIZ files can be
  81.    deleted.  The post-installation space requirements are 1.5 megs for
  82.    MAX.EXE and supporting files, 800k for documentation, plus space to
  83.    hold all of your message bases and file areas.

  85.    Finally, DOS users should have at LEAST 400K of free memory before
  86.    beginning the installation.  Although Maximus itself requires very
  87.    little memory (under 164K), the INSTALL program needs a lot of
  88.    working space to decompress the .FIZ archives.

  90. 3) Before beginning the installation, OS/2 users should read OS2.DOC.
