  2. % on my system).  You are free to edit the existing announcements
  3. % or add your own.  The only limitation is the line length 72
  4. % characters, and the number of lines 5.  The number of lines can
  5. % be increased within the ANNOUNCE.CTL file.  Also, in the CTL file
  6. % are values for colors, screen position and output filenames.

  8. %  Lines beginning with a "%" are considered comments, and,  are
  9. % also used within the ANNOUNCE.KSL file to indicate the beginning
  10. % and end of the message.  ANNOUNCE.EXE will read this file and,
  11. % based on the number generated by random,  select the message which
  12. % coorespondes positionally.  If the number is too large compared to
  13. % the number of messages you've placed in this file, a calculation
  14. % takes place to maintain the random choice within the confines of
  15. % your message file.

  17.  New subsidiaries of Nakamichi Peripherals Corp. of Japan are gearing
  18. up to deliver their new 3.5" rewritable optical disk drives to OEM's 
  19. and end users. Mass Optical Storage Technologies is the developer and
  20. manufacturer of the 3.5" optical disk drive and will sell it on an 
  21. OEM basis.

  23.  Maxtor has developed a new 3.5" hard disk drive the company claims
  24. is "the biggest" in the business.  The new LXT-535 can store 535MB.
  25. The drive comes w/SCSI or w/AT interface.  Average seek time is 12ms,
  26. Maxtor says.  The OEM price for the LXT-535 is $1450; for the LXT-437,
  27. $1250.

  29.  IBM's M-Motion Video Adapter/A board will soon work with Windows 3.0.
  30. The Micro-Channel device for converting video input to VGA images
  31. currently comes with software that runs only under OS/2 and DOS.
  32. However, IBM recently introduced in Japan a Windows based M-Motion
  33. board, and the U.S. market should see a similar product in near future.

  35.  An old name in typewrites, Smith-Corona, plans to market a line of
  36. personal computers aimed at home and small business users.  The new
  37. PC's will be developed by Taiwan based Acer to specifications from
  38. Smith-Corona, and manufactured by Smith-Corona in Cortland, New York.

  42.  AT&T's Unix System Laboratories is opening a center in Summit, NJ,
  43. where software vendors can certify System V release 4 applications on
  44. various hardware platforms, including Intel, MIPS, Motorola and SPARC.

  47. Hercules takes RISC:
  48.  Hercules Computer Technology (Berkeley, Ca), known primarily
  49. for it's PC monochrome cards, has teamed up with AQuest to develope
  50. graphics cards using Intel's i860 64-bit RISC processor.

  53.  In speaking to an Intel technician at Fall Comdex '90,  I learned
  54. that the 'Falcon' chip announced in Byte magazine and others a while
  55. back is indeed for real.  The official word was 'No comment' however,
  56. the tech. informed me that the chip does exist and should be available
  57. by late in the 1st quarter of 1991.  Imagine, a 386 chip in your 286..

  59.  "One quick caveat about megahertz. You may see ads bragging about
  60. how fast a particular machine is in terms of Mhz. Keep in mind that
  61. Mhz is only one factor in the overall performance equation. You can
  62. have a screamingly fast processor.  However, if you do not have the
  63. processor to support it, you will encounter slower processing. :-)

  65.  Harcourt Brace Jovanovich plans to publish a book next year on
  66. Virtual Reality cowritten by one of its foremost explorers, Jaron
  67. Lanier.  Lanier, founder of VPL Research, was paid a six-figure 
  68. advance for the manuscript on "alternative sensory realities,"
  69. the publisher said...

  71.  For those still suffering from the 286-AT blues, MicroWay has one
  72. of the niftiest add-in 386sx cards available, the FastCache-SX.  The
  73. card does not require an expansion slot, instead it installs in place
  74. of the existing 80286 chip on the motherboard. Support for an 80387sx
  75. is also provide via a cable which plugs into the 80287 socket.
