  2. 1. HISTORY FILE (reverse chronology)

  8. -------------------------
  9.  
  10. o   New ADVANCED settings: default outgoing domain and Index Tracking
  11.     line number.  If specified, the default domain value will be appended
  12.     to all addresses that do NOT have an "@" in them.
  13.     
  14.     Track Index Line denotes how the index tracks when navigating 
  15.     through messages.  For example, when using +/- with a tracking index
  16.     of 10 (the default), the index is scrolled so that the current message
  17.     is always the 10th line of the index (or at least visible, when at
  18.     the start of the list).  A value of zero suppresses this tracking.
  19.     
  20.     A Color button is now included.  This maintains only one color at
  21.     this time.  You can change the color used to denote NEW items with
  22.     this form.  You may have to exit and reenter to notice the change in
  23.     colors.
  24.  
  25. o   MR/2 ICE now recognizes a "MAIN" and a "LOCAL" or account-specific
  26.     address book and address group collection.  This will effect users
  27.     with secondary accounts a bit.
  28.  
  29.     What happens now is that MR/2 ICE loads an address book from your 
  30.     account directory.  It then checks the base MR/2 directory for a 
  31.     "main" address book and adds these into the online collection.  You 
  32.     can maintain which book an address is written to on save (checkbox 
  33.     on address maintenance form).
  34.  
  35.     Without change, most users will not notice a differences.  Those 
  36.     signing onto secondary accounts SHOULD MOVE mr2i.adr from the base 
  37.     MR/2 directory into the MAIL sub directory.  Otherwise, they'll get 
  38.     both address books loaded (possible duplicates).
  39.  
  40.     This allows a shared central book, in addition to a account-specific 
  41.     book.  Address GROUPS follow the same system.
  42.  
  43. o   CTRL-FKey crashed on new messages fixed.  May have been a 
  44.     news-only bug.
  45.  
  46. o   KOI8-R translation of headers fixed.
  47.  
  48. o   New (small) EXE includes:  mr2iu.exe.  This is a utility that will
  49.     talk to running copies of MR/2 ICE.  It's actually identical to
  50.     mr2i.exe, except it's text-mode and will simply exit if a running
  51.     copy is not found.  This lets REXX scripts and other utilities 
  52.     control running MR/2 ICE copies without the overhead of loading a
  53.     PM app, and without the associated screen flash.  Example:
  54.     
  55.         mr2iu /X
  56.         
  57.     will cause the running MR/2 ICE to poll for mail.
  58.     
  59.         mr2iu /Enick@secant.com
  60.         
  61.     will start a new email to me, using a running copy.
  62.  
  63. o   Incorrect Pirate key notification corrected.  Using /X of any type
  64.     would call you a pirate.  Sorry!
  65.  
  66. o   +/- keys and some others will scroll the message index with message. 
  67.     Default is to set current message as line #10.  Configurable
  68.     via Settings->Advanced; set to zero to suppress.
  69.  
  70. o   Newsgroup and folder names are now stores as EA's on their 
  71.     respective NDX files.  This will help potential crash recovery tools 
  72.     in the future.
  73.  
  74. o   Added the command line parameter /Vfilename.  /V was previously used 
  75.     for an obscure and worthless option, so it was recycled.  Will 
  76.     display the named file as a message (in "ready to reply" mode).
  77.  
  78. o   Fixed a clipboard issue with Lotus 123 (thanks, Ken).  MR/2 will 
  79.     also behave when run on a system with ManyClip.exe.
  80.  
  81. o   N, P and R are now active within the viewer to NEXT, PREVIOUS and 
  82.     REPLY.  I can/will add other keys as time goes by.
  83.  
  84. o   Outbound filters fixed - should move message from outbox, when asked.
  85.  
  86. o   Fixes some issues with MIME headers (mail)
  87.  
  88. o   Changes the CTRL-Fkeys to (hopefully) eliminate the
  89.     occassional failure.  I *did* find something coded incorrectly.

  94.  
  95. If you have registered MR/2 ICE and are not receiving my release 
  96. announcements, please write and report you e-mail address, name and
  97. serial number.  You may have changed email addresses.  If you registered
  98. with BMT or OS/2 Shareware BBS in the "early days", your address may have
  99. been lost or never reported (the BBS never asked for it until recently).
  100.  
  101. If you are receiving announcements at a Compuserve address and which to
  102. switch to another address, just write.
  103.

  106. Registrations are taking no more than a week to turn around.  If you don't
  107. get your key within this timeframe, please (you guessed it :) write.  I 
  108. often have keys bounce, and the address I entered matches that provided 
  109. on the forms.  I have no recourse until you write me!

  111. Finally, the NEWSREADER addon to MR/2 ICE is progressing nicely.  I plan
  112. at least one more expansion, where I add beta testers.  Maybe more  When
  113. I add a group, we are testing the setup and initial user reaction.  At
  114. this time, I am only accepting REGISTERED USERS as potential testers.

  118. o   Keyboard fixups and changes relating to the SOURCE and REPLY window
  119.     hotkeys.  Was interfering with the use of ALT-4 and ALT-6 to enter
  120.     hi-end ASCII.
  121.     
  122. o   Removed the case where too many charset translations were performed 
  123.     when replying to messages with hi-end ASCII in subject.  Previously,
  124.     the reply subject would lose the characters.
  125.     
  126. o   Spacebar will now "page through" the current folder's messages, one
  127.     screen at a time, switching to the NEXT message when at the end of
  128.     the current.  I'll add a configuration for "direction".  Still may 
  129.     need an adjustment so as to minimize wastfull end-of-message
  130.     displays of a single non-text line.
  131.     
  132. o   You may now sort messages lists by SIZE.
  133.  
  134. o   FILTER->Special should finally work as claimed in the last release :)
  135.  
  136. o   Some menu mnemonics changed to avoid collision.
  137.  
  138. o   Environment variables are set with message-context information for
  139.     ALL external Rexx invocations.  Msgutil.org has examples of how to
  140.     get to pre-parsed pieces of message data.
  141.     
  142. o   Header alignment (when not displaying header) should be much more 
  143.     accurate.  No more parts of header showing because long header lines
  144.     are wrapping.
  145.     
  146. o   The internal message viewer (designated by a viewer of "*" in 
  147.     MIME association settings) now opens the message in SOURCE mode, so
  148.     it may be replied-to.
  149.     
  150. o   Appledouble attachment viewing now formats the part to display 
  151.     correctly.
  152.     
  153. o   Mailto.exe has now switched to another large SMTP server for its
  154.     default.  IBM Advantis placed security on their server so that
  155.     non ibm.net users cannot use it.
  156.     
  157. o   Minor security issues added.  Very few will ever see evidence of 
  158.     these.
  159.     
  160. o   As usual, I know there are more, probably minor issues, but I don't
  161.     have a record of them.
  162.     
  163.  
  164. Changes included in v1.28
  165. -------------------------
  166. I consider this a hopefully-final "pre-1.3" release.  Enough changed
  167. that I'll watch for new issues before calling it v1.3.
  168.  
  169. o   Clipboard History / Manager.  The PASTE menus now contain up to
  170.     5 of the previous copy/cuts since MR/2 ICE was started.  While
  171.     running, MR/2 ICE can record cut/copy from ANY application.  
  172.     However, the history is private to within MR/2 ICE and is reset
  173.     on each restart.
  174.                     
  175. o   NETSCAPE interfacing.  Options->Settings->Advanced now offers
  176.     the chance to control a running instance of Netscape, if this
  177.     is your browser of choice.  You may load a selected URL into
  178.     Netscape's main window, or request a secondary window (still 
  179.     within the same instance) to be opened.
  180.                     
  181. o   Copy to folder bug.  If the same message is somehow sent
  182.     to the same folder twice, the original copy's index entry would
  183.     incorrectly record the folder's collision-adjusted file name.
  184.     In other words, two copies would end up in the folder, the second
  185.     copy with a newly generated unique name.  That name would also
  186.     get recorded in the inbox (for example), where the file was
  187.     NOT renamed.  This would result in:
  188.                             
  189.     -   The message reporting a "MR/2 ICE file system error"
  190.         when opened.
  191.                     
  192.     -   Deletions would remove the index entry but fail to find the
  193.         matching message file (not reported to the user). A later
  194.         reindex would show the original message.  This would appear
  195.         as if the message was "lost" and never seen.  Not so.
  196.                             
  197.     While not actually a loss of data, this bug was confusing and 
  198.     confidence-shaking.  The algorithm has been changed and the 
  199.     original message file name preserved.
  200.                 
  201. o   %Z variable in templates will now equate correctly to the header
  202.     date's timezone.  This variable is always replaced by a numeric
  203.     (signed) value, and the attempts to offer text literal values
  204.     (e.g., "EST") have been ceased.
  205.                 
  206. o   Filter - Special.  Did I list this before?  The list of special
  207.     criteria is now represented as CHECKBOXES instead of radio
  208.     buttons.  IOW, you can check for multiple special circustances
  209.     in a single filter.
  210.                 
  211.     Disposition screen now has longer textual descriptions of choices.
  212.  
  213.  
  214. Changes included in v1.27
  215. -------------------------
  216. This is the worst I've been at documenting bug fixes.  All of the
  217. below from memory; the big ones are easy to recall.  There may be
  218. more smaller fixes included, but forgotten.
  219.  
  220. o   Mr2i.exe has been radically reworked and a new DLL, mr2i.dll, 
  221.     contains most of the working code.  This allows other DLL's to 
  222.     access the MR/2 ICE base code.  It also has the side benefit of 
  223.     allowing secondary copies of MR/2 ICE to load more quickly.
  224.     
  225.     MR2I.EXE is around 10k in this release.
  226.     
  227. o   Phrases. A phrase subsystem has been added.  You can save 
  228.     frequently needed snippets of text as a "phrase" and insert it 
  229.     into any future message quickly.  Inserting a phrase can be 
  230.     performed via the dynamic message INSERT menu or via a short 
  231.     series of keystrokes that identify the phrases "tag".
  232.  
  233.     Utilities->Phrase Maintenace for general maintenance
  234.     
  235.     Edit->Add to phrases (adds marked block) 
  236.     
  237.     Insert->Phrase to call up a phrase via dialog box OR traverse
  238.         the cascading sub menu to access a subset via menu 
  239.     
  240.     Insert->Phrase by tag (CTRL-I) to access a phrase by tag.
  241.     
  242.     So, for example, I want to insert a 3 paragraph blurb about a 
  243.     recent price increase; something I do often.  I use to open a 
  244.     folder used specifically for snippets of frquently used text, 
  245.     find the message, open it, mark/copy, close, go back to the 
  246.     original message, paste.  Now, all is required (once the phrase 
  247.     is saved) in my case is to type: CTRL-I "price" ENTER.
  248.  
  249. o   RMB->Pack is available on the folder menu.  This simply spawns a
  250.     REXX script (provided) called "pack.cmd" passing the specifics of
  251.     each highlighted folder.  This script depends on the existence of
  252.     ZIP.EXE in your path (modify the script to suit).
  253.     
  254.     MR/2 ICE can now officially archive folder contents into zip files,
  255.     but still extract these for viewing on demand.  NOTE that there are
  256.     many restrictions to what can be done with a packed folder (for 
  257.     example, you can't reindex it).  Archiving is for non-volitale,
  258.     mostly-read-only folders.  It *can* save a ton of disk space.
  259.     
  260.     All messages are zipped into a file called messages.dat, and the
  261.     folder.ndx file remains visible.  MR/2 ICE handles the extraction
  262.     of each message as needed.
  263.     
  264.     NOTE: please do not start too many folder packers at one time. While
  265.     it is possible to spawn dozens at the same time, system performance
  266.     will suffer.  Please try one or two at a time.
  267.     
  268.  
  269. o   Command Line: /O was refined and improved.  It now accepts up to 
  270.     three parameters:
  271.     
  272.         mr2i /Obad.msg "This is the reason" "Bad Message!"
  273.         
  274.     The above example loads the file "bad.msg" into an active 
  275.     message editor window.  It then pops up a message box with the 
  276.     text specified as parameter 2 and the title of parameter 3.  If 
  277.     parameter 3 is not specified, the title "NOTE!!" is used.  If 
  278.     parameter 2 is not specified, no message box is displayed.
  279.  
  280. o   Command Line: /Q was refined and improved.  It is now much more 
  281.     sensitive to collisions (files being queued from more than once 
  282.     session at the same time).    
  283.  
  284. o   Accelerators and Keyboard.  The keyboard and accelerator 
  285.     interface has been vastly improved.  A few stray problems 
  286.     remain, but a big improvement overall.
  287.  
  288. o   Filter Notebook.  Filter maintenance has been reworked to show 
  289.     all filters in a notebook layout for maintenance.  This will 
  290.     allow more room for addition of more "actions" (coming soon).
  291.  
  292. o   Menu. "Edit message externally" and "Edit file" have switched 
  293.     parent menus.  This may cause some short-term inconvenience, but 
  294.     is more intuitive in the long run.
  295.                                    
  296. o   Issues with changing accounts.  Tabs and window sizes would 
  297.     often get confused when switching accounts.  Fixed.
  298.     
  299.     Also, the first settings page was made to reuse an obsolete 
  300.     field. You can now control the text displayed when the "Display 
  301.     account name in titlebar" (Settings->Preferences) is specified.
  302.  
  303. o   Memory leaks.  While debugging the upcoming newsreader module, I 
  304.     found quite a few memory leaks.  While all were relatively 
  305.     minor, they could have become significant during prolonged use.  
  306.     Still looking!
  307.  
  308. o   RMB->ReplyTo.  You can now use RMB->Reply to in order to reply 
  309.     to the current message, using the address under the cursor as 
  310.     the recipient.
  311.  
  312. o   GroupMtc form - changes in video modes or cards should no longer 
  313.     interfere with the look of this form.
  314.  
  315. o   Address Book Maintenance keystrokes.  Experimental.  If you type 
  316.     a series of keyboard characters while viewing the AB pick list 
  317.     (Utilities->Address Book Maintenance), the system will try to 
  318.     match the string to a value.  The data to test depends on the 
  319.     current sort order; the sort column is matched.  For example, 
  320.     sorting on Real Name, typing in "J", "O", "H" then "N" will 
  321.     select the FIRST Real Name starting with "John".  The SPACEBAR 
  322.     resets the test string to empty.
  323.     
  324.     I played around with various ideas.  At first, I matched ANY 
  325.     text that you typed, but this was too generic.  Let me kniw what 
  326.     you think.
  327.  
  328. o   Queued messages not all being sent.  A bug in outbound filters 
  329.     would often interfere the the sending queue.  The bug was 
  330.     non-destructive, but did result in message having to be manually 
  331.     requeued for sending.
  332.  
  333. o   Insert email address.  The INSERT menu now has an entry for 
  334.     inserting an email address from the address book.
  335.  
  336. o   Reply-to-all now makes an attempt to exclude the current user
  337.     as a recipient.
  338.     
  339.  
  340. Changes included in v1.25 and v1.26
  341. -----------------------------------
  342. More bug fixes and enhancements including but not limited to:
  343.  
  344. o   Command line: /H flag can be specified.  This causes MR/2 to
  345.     change its path to where mr2i.exe is found.  This happens
  346.     immediately after program load.
  347.  
  348. o   Command line: /Ofilename can be used now to specify an existing
  349.     message file (properly formed as per RFC-822) to be automatically
  350.     opened on program load
  351.  
  352. o   Forwarding of multiple messages now prompts ONCE for only a single
  353.     address, then uses the default Forward template to forward each
  354.     selected message.
  355.  
  356. o   Filters: Forward Message is now functional
  357.  
  358. o   ICON change for replied messages.  Several icons donated by 
  359.     Keith Dombrowski <kdombrowski@mhv.net>, and I liked this one the
  360.     best.  Thanks Keith!
  361.  
  362. o   Detach on FAT drive fix.  Name mangler was removing all dots and 
  363.     turning them to "-"'s.  Forward slashes were also not converted
  364.     properly.
  365.  
  366. o   Several changes to the way the command line /Q option worked.  
  367.     this includes a synchronization between a runnning copy and a 
  368.     second invocation, where the second copy will not return until
  369.     the running copy has queued the message safely.
  370.  
  371. o   New utility test case: wrap.exe.  Provided to aid in on-demand 
  372.     PGP use.
  373.     
  374. o   Mailto.exe included in distribution zip.
  375.  
  376. o   Upgrade.txt now also included.
  377.  
  378. o   Miscellaneous changes to help with continuing newsreader 
  379.     development.
  380.  
  381.  
  382. Changes included in v1.23 and v1.24
  383. -----------------------------------
  384. NOTE: v1.23 was a short-term stability beta.  v1.24 fixes some 
  385. additional bugs, plus addresses several minor issues introduced in the 
  386. v1.23 release.
  387.  
  388. I fixed many, many bugs as they were reported, and only in the last day 
  389. or two started to try to remember them so as to document these.  Outside 
  390. of changes related to the upcoming news client addition, the following 
  391. items are what I remember fixing:
  392.  
  393. o   /X on the command line will now tell a RUNNING copy to poll for mail.
  394.     
  395. o   Changing accounts will handle pop3 password changes/prompts better.
  396.  
  397. o   Multiple account FILTERS (those NOT using multiple accounts see no 
  398.     change). Filter files are now based on the account name. The default 
  399.     filter file for the MAIL account in in the MR/2 ICE "root".  
  400.     Secondary accounts now access an MR2I.FLT file in their base 
  401.     subdirectories.  More changes like this to follow to improve 
  402.     secondary account autonomy.
  403.  
  404. o   Cursor position after header edit AND/OR detach message is restored.
  405.  
  406. o   Open Attached directory now gives correct error messages.
  407.  
  408. o   Filters using REXX criteria checks are now passed a proper source
  409.     file name for foldered messages (when invoked "on demand").
  410.  
  411. o   Careful!  I changed the "find in index" search logic a bit, and it
  412.     took me a couple of days to get used to it.  When you do an index
  413.     "find", it now highlights ALL matches at one time, and scrolls to 
  414.     the first.  With this, it's an easy matter to find all messages
  415.     from "gates@microsoft.com" and RMB->DELETE them (or move, copy,
  416.     bounce, whatever).
  417.     
  418.     The danger lies in the fact that HUNDREDS of messages might be 
  419.     highlighted, but maybe only one is showing on current the page.
  420.     RMB->Delete gets all of them.  If you want the single messages,
  421.     always click on it once first, to select only it.
  422.     
  423.     I see the need for a marked-message count somewhere.
  424.  
  425. o   "Re:" is inserted in front of subjects (when replying) in a 
  426.     different part of the code and will be more consistent.
  427.     
  428. o   Progression meter will now display more reliably
  429.  
  430. o   If the "send now" checkbox is unchecked, the message will be marked
  431.     as "save now but don't send".
  432.     
  433. o   Pertainent index RMB menus now have Mark as->On hold (same as save
  434.     but don't send).
  435.     
  436. o   Quoted Printable display bug fixed for lines > 74 chars and "soft"
  437.     linefeeds.
  438.  
  439. o   Template $File lines are filtered for embedded variables before
  440.     being processed.
  441.     
  442. o   New template variable @UserPath@ will expand to the current account 
  443.     (which is also the default mail path).  This allows secondary 
  444.     profiles to include @UserPath@ in their templates to include unique 
  445.     sigs per account.  Templates making use of this should be sure to 
  446.     copy referenced file into the MAIL directory for the default user 
  447.     profile.
  448.     
  449.     Example template use, default reply template:
  450.     
  451.         $file:@userpath@\mr2i.sig
  452.         
  453.     Would include "mail\mr2i.sig" for the default user, "noone\mri2.sig"
  454.     for a profile labeled "noone", etc.,.
  455.     
  456.     More separation of account files coming ...
  457.     
  458. o   Attachment file names are converted to a FAT-compatible file name if 
  459.     found to be working on a FAT-only drive.  Hard for me to test, so 
  460.     let me know if any problems arrise.
  461.     
  462. o   Fixed yet-another bug when extracting BinHex file names.
  463.     
  464. o   Previously, in/out filters would end up tallying outgoing copies 
  465.     into a folder as a "new" message.  Fixed.
  466.     
  467. o   Quoting of previously quoted material will be much cleaner.  I broke 
  468.     this awhile back in the name of "efficiency", but now it's back to
  469.     the way it should work.
  470.     
  471. o   Some menu shortcut keystroke clashes have been fixed.
  472.  
  473. o   An example of a MIME Content-Type header > 512 bytes was provided 
  474.     (yikes!).  This would *previously* crash MR/2 ICE.  Fixed.
  475.     
  476. o   When a PreFetch filter that fetches headers-only exists and is 
  477.     enabled, REMOVE FROM SERVER AFTER FETCHED is totally ignored for 
  478.     safety.  Purging becomes a manual process, use Message->Purge from 
  479.     server.
  480.     
  481. o   On-demand REXX (CTRL-Fkey) is now called with many environment 
  482.     variables set with ready-to-use data.  The following information is 
  483.     passed this way:

  504. o   Address book can now be sorted via a RMB popup menu.  This menu
  505.     also contains selections to add, delete and edit entries.  More
  506.     items will be added ...
  507.     
  508. o   Prefetch filters would fetch headers, but there was usually trouble
  509.     getting the corresponding bodies.  Fixed.  Sorry!
  510.     
  511. o   Alt-W, write to file's file selection box works correctly now.
  512.  
  513. o   A move-to-folder now sets the archive bit of the file object.
  514.  
  515. o   Menu items are better enabled when a prefetch filter exists.
  516.  
  517. o   Timezone logic still did not correctly account for DST setting.
  518.     Should be fixed now!
  519.     
  520. o   MIME associations are now referenced when attaching files.  The
  521.     attachment will now acquire the Content-Type of a matching suffix,
  522.     if one is defined (e.g., a GIF will be marked as "image/gif").
  523.     Otherwise, when a filename suffix match is not defined, 
  524.     "application/octet-stream" is defaulted.
  525.     
  526. o   MIME configuration page has a new checkbox.  "Consider undefined 
  527.     MIME types as displayable text".  Defaults to OFF.
  528.     
  529. o   MIME mutipart attachments (like those dredded appledouble subtypes)
  530.     handling modified.  MR/2 ICE now explains your options when you try
  531.     to Message->Detach with one of these types.  It also will 
  532.     automatically invoke the internal viewer on these parts if
  533.     "detached" individually (same effect as "viewing").  This will
  534.     save a ton of support questions.
  535.     
  536. o   When detaching a part of an unknown encoding and unknown file name,
  537.     the system generated file name is correctly displayed.  Previously,
  538.     an empty list would display.
  539.     
  540. o   The advanced option to send a file as an attachment from the command
  541.     line was slanted towards the FAX interface.  The command line syntax
  542.     for this remains unchanged.  However, the following commands will
  543.     send a file as an attachment preserving the source file's name:
  544.     
  545.         mr2i /q:whatever.zip user@wherever.com "File for you!"
  546.         mr2i /q:*whatever.zip user@wherever.com "File for you!"
  547.         
  548.     The second form of the command sends the file uuencoded, while the
  549.     first form is the default of MIME/base64 encoding.
  550.     
  551. o   Rot13 is available from within the viewer (menu item is active).
  552.  
  553. o   If text is marked when replying, that text is quoted into the reply
  554.     regardless of the state of the "quote source message" global setting.
  555.     This allows for you to "usually NOT quote", but haveing a selection
  556.     quoted when you need.
  557.     
  558. o   Reediting a "save but don't send" message now send the correct,
  559.     modified version.  I'm embarassed and sorry for trouble caused by

  638. NOTES ON THE WORKINGS OF PREVIEW MODE (HEADER-ONLY INDEX ENTRIES)
  639. =================================================================
  640.  
  641. When you turn on MANUAL / PREVIEW mode with your POP3 server, the system
  642. automatically fetches only headers for all new messages.  You can open
  643. these entries as if they were normal messages, and this might be handy
  644. if you need to examine the headers.  However, the more-common use of 
  645. header-only index entries is to allow selective fetching.
  646.  
  647. Header-only index entries will be marked with a round "dot" icon.
  648.  
  649. To fetch one or more full messages from a group of header-only entries, 
  650. simply MARK the desired items and invoke a pop3 poll (F2, 
  651. Message->Check for mail or third toolbar icon from the end).  All marked
  652. headers will be fetched first, then a normal poll for new headers will
  653. be performed.
  654.  
  655. Remove from Server mode is ignored when Manual Mode is selected.  To
  656. support this feature with POP3 servers that do NOT support the UIDL
  657. command, message counts are used, and deleting messages from the server
  658. would be risky.  Hence, in manual/preview mode, manual purges must be 
  659. performed periodically (Message->Purge from server).
  660.  
  661. The MANUAL/Preview Mode flag is set by going to Options->Settings.  
  662. On the first "network" page, in the POP3 groupbox is the "Manual mode"
  663. checkbox.

  666. PREFETCH FILTERS
  667. ================
  668.  
  669. Prefetch filters can be used in both Manual mode and "normal" mode to
  670. automatically and selectively control the fetching of messages in
  671. FULL or HEADER-ONLY mode.  The disposition of a prefetch-filtered message
  672. will stay true regardless of the POP3 read mode.  For instance, if a
  673. certain set of criteria defines a message to be fetched as "header only",
  674. only the header will result in either mode.  Alternatively, if a "full
  675. message fetch" filter is created, messages matching this criteria will
  676. always be retreived in full-body mode, regardless of the overall POP3
  677. fetch mode.
  678.  
  679. I use PreFetch filters on my system at home, where I have a dial-up
  680. connection.  The filter tells MR/2 ICE to only fetch headers when the
  681. message size is greater that 120,000 bytes.  This allows me to see all
  682. of my mail more quickly and easily identifies mail that is probably
  683. including attachments.  I then request to fetch these messages manually,
  684. but I am free to read and respond to all other messages in the meantime.
  685. Very handy.  And "mostly automatic".
  686.

  718. o   POP3 manual mode can be specified.  In this mode, headers are 
  719.     fetched from the POP3 server but no bodies.  Index entries are 
  720.     inserted with a new icon.  The user can then pick and choose which 
  721.     full messages are fetched and when.
  722.     
  723. -   NOTE that this mode works ONLY with pop3 servers that support the
  724.     TOP command.  If the TOP command is not supported, MR/2 will fail
  725.     when fetching the first message.  No mail is fetched, but no mail
  726.     is lost, either, as turning off MANUAL mode will correct the 
  727.     problem.

  729. -   BIGGER NOTE!  For those of you that have setup  MR/2 ICE so that
  730.     if fetches from multiple providers into a single MAIL directory
  731.     (by manually editing the INI file :), please DO NOT USE THIS FEATURE.
  732.     The uniqueness of message ID's is required, and mixing mail from
  733.     two ISP's and/or POP3 accounts will surely confuse things.
  734.                 
  735. o   PreFetch filters.  Filters that control the automated fetching of 
  736.     messages from the POP3 server.  Criteria can be defined based on a 
  737.     message's header and/or size.  If the criteria is matches, the user 
  738.     can specify to have fetch the full message, just the header, or to 
  739.     skip the message entirely.

  741.     There are two modes available.  When used in normal "non manual" 
  742.     mode, PreFetch filters can be used to specify message for which only 
  743.     the HEADERS are desired.  For example, messages from a certain user 
  744.     or over a specified size can be fetched in header-only mode, letting 
  745.     the user decide if/when to get the entire message.
  746.  
  747. o   In-Progress messages that *are not* ready to be sent can not be
  748.     saved into the outbox with assurance that it will not be sent.
  749.     Use Message->Save (but don't send).  The icon for these messages
  750.     will show as a paper and quill/pen.  A message can be "saved" any
  751.     number of times ... once you click on the SEND button, it gets
  752.     saved and sent.
  753.                         
  754. o   MR/2 ICE Ask-The-Experts(tm) Web Page!  Yet another way to get 
  755.     user-based help for what's already the best-supported OS/2 email 
  756.     available!  Simple web interface accepts and email address and 
  757.     question(s) from the user.  This is then emailed to a panel of MR/2 
  758.     ICE veteran users that have volunteered to share their knowledge.
  759.                     
  760. o   UUPC/UUCP drivers for MR/2 ICE are available.  This is a set of 
  761.     third-party Rexx scripts and a small EXE that, when used in 
  762.     conjunction with MR/2 ICE's new "custom mail driver" feature, allows 
  763.     the native reading and sending of UUCP-style email.  See the ICE web 
  764.     page for details and to ftp the latest version.
  765.

  769. o   Split-screen editor:  ghost split-slider removed when zooming a

  790.     the home page, the FAQ and the Ask-The-Experts(tm) page.  An online 
  791.     web-based manual with SEARCH capabilites should be available soon.

  811. I consider this a BETA release of what will be v1.2.  Seems stable to 
  812. me, but TONS of low level code has been teaked and prodded.  Could
  813. be some instability in there, somewhere.  Be warned!

  815. o   Folder-to-folder copying and moving performance improved. A move
  816.     is now a TRUE file system level move, with far less overhead
  817.     that the previous method of copying, then deleting.  Both copy
  818.     and move now steamline the updating of the target index file,
  819.     providing another large performance boast.  Still not perfect,
  820.     but loads better!
  821.     
  822. -   Also cleaned up some window painting issues that should help 
  823.     speed up things even more.

  825. o   Added a "Use MIME by default flag" flag to the MIME page.  If 
  826.     checked, all dropped files will be MIME'd, and the default

  828.     for both is UUEncoding.

  830. o   Better handling of progression indicator when the pop3 server
  831.     does NOT return a message's file size up front.  Previously,
  832.     large messages would appear to start downloading quickly, then
  833.     "frieze" (often at 85% or so).  In fact, they were working, but
  834.     the 85% was based on 3000 bytes (a made-up default), and the 
  835.     progression metter would never update > 100% of 3000.  Now the
  836.     progress metter may STILL not indicate actual percentages, but
  837.     it will "bounce around" and continually update.  (Specifically
  838.     apparent with ISP's using PowerWeb pop server - e.g. os2bbs.com).
  839.     
  840. o   SENDS now connect with the SMTP/POP3 host once, send all messages,
  841.     *then* disconnect.  Previous, each message would cause a 
  842.     connect, send, disconnect.  No real problem for quick connections
  843.     to fast receiving hosts, but very time consuming to slower 
  844.     connections with mail hosts that do not "connect" quickly.
  845.     
  846. o   Custom "user programmable" Mail Drivers.
  847.  
  848.     New mail FETCH and SEND options in settings notebook ... CUSTOM.
  849.     This allows for user defined REXX procedures to be called to 
  850.     create the collection of incoming mail and to send each outgoing
  851.     message.  I can see this working for UUCP and even MHS formatted
  852.     message, and perhaps a whole lot more.  Here's how it works.
  853.     
  854.     Read mail via CUSTOM.  At the beginning of each poll for new mail, a 
  855.     rexx script called "getmail.cmd" is called from the base mail 
  856.     directory for the account.  For example, the initial/default account 
  857.     would call "mail\getmail.cmd".  After that, the system checks the 
  858.     defined SMTP delivery directory (change this path as desired) for 
  859.     new files, and these are recognized as new mail.  If an error 
  860.     occurs, a one-line message describing it should be stored in a file 
  861.     called "getmail.err" in the base mail directory.  This message is 
  862.     displayed to the user.  The absense of this file indicates a 
  863.     successful custom fetch.
  864.     
  865.     Send mail via CUSTOM.  For each message queued for sending, a rexx 
  866.     script called "postmail.cmd" is called from the base mail directory 
  867.     for the account.  For example, the initial/default account would 
  868.     call "mail\postmail.cmd".  The name of a temporary file housing the 
  869.     ready-to-send message is passed.  If an error occurs, a one-line 
  870.     message describing it should be stored in a file called 
  871.     "postmail.err" in the base mail directory.  This message is 
  872.     displayed to the user.  The absense of this file indicates a 
  873.     successful custom send.
  874.     
  875.     Custom Mail Drivers (CMD's? :) should start by deleting their 
  876.     respective error files, as these are preloaded by MR/2 ICE before
  877.     invocation with "REXX script not found" messages.
  878.  
  879. o   Long email addresses when saved to Address Book would sometimes
  880.     get chopped and corrupted.  We're talking *really long* addresses,
  881.     but even these work now.
  882.  
  883. o   Marking a URL for Web Browsing/FTP now uses only the marked portion.
  884.     Previously, marked section was ignored and the entire word/string
  885.     would be used as happens when nothing is marked.
  886.  
  887. o   New "Redirect" option on RMB Message Index menus.  Allows you to
  888.     quickly "bounce" messages to some other email address.  Message(s)

  1099. safe :).  Comments and/or suggestions are welcome.  See install.txt,

  1113. o   Command line parameter /D can be used as in this example:

  1117.     and will load MR/2 ICE, detach all attachments found in the
  1118.     named message file.  A list of all detached files will be 
  1119.     found in the named logfile.  If no logfile is specified,
  1120.     the log is written to stdout.

  1122.     This is used in the faxrcv.cmd file included with MR/2 ICE
  1123.     for use with a link-to-Rexx filter.
  1124.     
  1125. o   Command line parameter /Q has been modified so that, if a space
  1126.     follows the /Q, a specific mode is invoked.  In this case, 3 parameters
  1127.     are expected:
  1128.     
  1129.         mr2i /Q filename address subject
  1130.         
  1131.     MR/2 ICE will create a new message to "address" (must be a valid 
  1132.     internet address, wrapped in quotes if it contains spaces) and with
  1133.     the given sibject (again, ""'s if spaces are included).  It then
  1134.     MIME encodes "filename" as an attachment and adds it into the
  1135.     outbox for sending.  If a copy MR/2 ICE is already running, that 
  1136.     copy will take over and send the message.  If no other copy is
  1137.     running, and MR/2 ICE is invoked as above, it will load the message
  1138.     into the outbox and exit.  To create the message, send and exit,
  1139.     without an existing running copy use:
  1140.         
  1141.         mr2i /XS /Q filename address subject
  1142.         
  1143.     Finally, if uuencoding is preferred over MIME encoding, you can 
  1144.     add a "*" in front of the file name:
  1145.

  1148.     While this works nicely for the purposes of interfacing with PMFax,
  1149.     it has potential with any other third party tools and/or user 
  1150.     scripts that need to send encoded files around.

  1179.     and features documented above.  NOTE THAT fxrcv.exe, as supplied
  1180.     with PMFax, is expected to be somewhere in your PATH.  If not, the
  1181.     script may be edited to point directly to the EXE, or this EXE
  1182.     can be copied somewhere in your PATH.

  1184. o   Double translations of MIME/QP text bug fixed.
  1185.  
  1186. o   New Settings->Prompts variable ... POP3 count threshold.  This is 
  1187.     a count that can be set or disabled.  Once your POP3 count grows
  1188.     past this threshold, MR/2 informs you of the situation on program
  1189.     load.  This to try and counter the problem with the default being
  1190.     to KEEP messages on the server, new users not knowing to purge,
  1191.     and mailboxes becoming full.
  1192.     
  1193. o   New warning that is issued when you attach a file via uuencoding
  1194.     and where that attachment's last line starts with a "." length
  1195.     character.  This has proven to cause trouble with various 
  1196.     combinations of POP3 servers and email clients, so MR/2 ICE suggests
  1197.     using MIME in these cases.  Note that the odds of this happening
  1198.     are something like 1:72, so it does happen!
  1199.  
  1200. o   Sorting of inbox and outbox is consistent when new messages are added.
  1201.  
  1202. o   Creation of a new folder now inserts the new item in the proper sorted
  1203.     spot.
  1204.     
  1205. o   Crash:  when a new outgoing message was created, then deleted from
  1206.     the outbox before sent, MR/2 would still try to send and crash at
  1207.     that time.  Fixed.

  1209. o   Crash: Some mailer liked to send BinHex with the entire section left
  1210.     padded with spaces.  I fixed both the code that crashed, then made
  1211.     it so the attachment is detachable.

  1215. o   I spent an enormous amount of time reworking the way Tools->External
  1216.     Editing *and* the way CTRL-FKeys save and reload the

  1219.     attachments when invoked.  (This does NOT effect use of an external
  1220.     editor ... just when a message is modified in a "special" way).

  1407. WARNING: I have totally reworked the attachment subsystem.  Not only
  1408. does this improve overall performance significantly, but it also
  1409. provides seamless MIME and BinHex (Binhex is detach only at this time).
  1410. HOWEVER, with any new code, there can be problems.  I am considering 
  1411. the attachment subsystem "in beta" ... just this mechanism.
  1412.  
  1413. I expect to release v1.1 on 08/01/96 with MIME support that includes
  1414. user-definable viewers, an improved CP translation table with added 
  1415. support for ISO-Latin-10 and KOI8-R (Russian) character sets.  In 
  1416. addition, a user will be able to select a specific Code Page 
  1417. translation for any message.
  1418.  
  1419. BIG NOTE:  The // command parameter, used in testing, should NOT be
  1420. used.  In fact, the program now warns you if it is used.  AND, in fact,
  1421. the // flag's function has been reversed.  Using //, at least for now,
  1422. will cause MR/2 ICE to revert (mostly) to the old "attachment text 
  1423. viewable in the message" mode.  Just as a precaution.
  1424.  
  1425. o   Progress with attachments.  Support for the basic MIME mechanism
  1426.     has been added.  MR/2 will now recognize and parse MIME message,
  1427.     displaying text sections and replacing "attachments" with markers
  1428.     that represent the attachment.  The Message->Detach function will
  1429.     now detach uuencode, MIME and BinHex attachments transparently.
  1430.     
  1431.     Attaching files also supports MIME messages.  The Message->Attach
  1432.     menu now is a conditional cascade with UUEncoding still being the
  1433.     default (plans to user-configure).  The sub menu lists other options,
  1434.     including MIME/base64.  BinHex outgoing is not yet supported.

  1436.     The Text option is an experiment, but I believe it will be useful.

  1460.     speed,  I have added the command line option "/W" which will use

  1463. o   New command line switch /Qfilename.  Will add the names file to the
  1464.     MR/2 ICE outbox and exit.  File is assumed to be a properly formed
  1465.     message file.  You can force MR/2 to attempt to send the message via
  1466.     use of the /XS flag.

  1468. o   New command line switch /Euser@domain.com.  Starts MR/2 ICE and 
  1469.     immediately invokes a new message to the address specified.  For use
  1470.     by a third-party address book program still in the works, but it 
  1471.     surely has other applications.

  1473. o   Command-line control of a running copy of MR/2 ICE.  The commands 
  1474.     above will actually cause an existing instance of MR/2, if found,
  1475.     to do the desired work.  I went the extra step of support this for
  1476.     multiple accounts, so specifying an account should talk to the right
  1477.     copy of MR/2 ICE.  So, using the /Q option to queue a file actually
  1478.     puts it in the outbox of a running copy, and proceeds to send it.
  1479.     Using the /E option causes a New Message header screen to pop to the 
  1480.     desktop from a running copy of ICE.  Also:

  1482.         /Qfile  - as described above
  1483.         
  1484.         /Euser@domain - as described above        
  1485.  
  1486.         /+  will restore and bring focus to a minimized/burried

  1491.     Other commands can be added as the need arises.  I'm open for
  1492.     good suggestions!

  1494.     NOTE that if a running copy of ICE is not found, a new copy is
  1495.     started and the work is done.  In the case of the /Q option,
  1496.     MR/2 ICE will exit after queuing.  /XS can be used to force it to
  1497.     send, too.  The /E option will start a new copy of MR/2 if one is
  1498.     not running, and the application remains active.    
  1499.  
  1500. o   POP3 server interface ... when an invalid password is given, will
  1501.     prompt you *only if* the config password is blank.  Otherwise,
  1502.     it just reports the error in the status window.  This prevents the
  1503.     prompting from interfering with auto-fetch scripts and procedures
  1504.     where the ISP might time out.
  1505.  
  1506. o   Using /S could end up racing the send thread with nothing for it to
  1507.     do, under certain conditions.  Fixed.

  1509. o   Closing Editor would "close" the app completely.  This was actually a

  1563.     This was implemented specifically for PGP signing and encrypting.

  2006.     per field.  That's roughly 30 well-formed (full, with real names)

  2276.     descriptions). This should help tremendously.  Some other printing 
  2277.     changes ... I'm hoping to hear of great results, but I assume I'm 
  2278.     not quite done yet.

  2280.     NOTE:  Form change dialogs.  I added these in and expect some of the 
  2281.     remaining problems to be with these.  If the driver knows you last 
  2282.     printed on Legal paper, or on Envelopes, the Job Properties dialog

  2284.     doesn't print after changing the settings) and I am looking into 
  2285.     this.  If this message comes up, try setting the properties outside

  2334. o   Printing?  I believe it's fixed ... at least the BIG problem with
  2335.     formated printing.  It turned out to be a driver-specific problem,
  2336.     which I knew before but couldn't place any logic behind it.  I have
  2337.     an office HPIII and HP4Plus that work perfectly.  Others had HP's 
  2338.     that wouldn't.  It all depended on how the driver handled a 
  2339.     seldom-used FORM specification.  This parameter is usually ignored, 
  2340.     so it is now removed and I've managed to print to my collection of
  2341.     dot-matrix test drivers.
  2342.     
  2343.     IF YOU STILL have a problem with formated printing, please let me
  2344.     know.  I'd like to know the version of WARP you are using (I've
  2345.     found that this matters in this case), the printer driver used, and
  2346.     and trap address and source.  I NEED ONLY the address as in 
  2347.     "generated an access violation at xxxxxxxx" and the module (MR2I.EXE,
  2348.     PMSPL.DLL, etc).

  2350. o   Other printer additions: settings.  The "Other port" option for draft
  2351.     printing has been enabled.  You can now specify any weirdness you want,
  2352.     although error checking is at a bare minimum.  Specified file/device
  2353.     is opened in "append text" mode.

  2355.     Also, a new draft setting that controls the end-of-print form feed.
  2356.     Sometimes it's needed, sometimes it produces a blank page.  Now you
  2357.     can pick which one you want.

  2359. o   I added some code to make printer selection persistent.  Testing will
  2360.     be very limited, and I'll know quickly if something doesn't work.

  2374. o   I tried to switch the filter system's REXX stuff to not load
  2375.     the command processor by calling RexxStart() directly.  Still

  2379.     to finish for this release.  Basically, a REXX file is invoked with 
  2380.     a key code and the file name, so you can do ANYTHING you want,

  2382.     I'll depend on for this ... it's just an escape for "special 
  2383.     processing". There's a msgutil.ccc file that can be renamed to a 
  2384.     cmd.  UNDERSTAND, please, that this whole thing may be reworked in 
  2385.     the next release. Consider it a toy/prototype at this time.  Ctrl-F9
  2386.     is not processed, Ctrl+F1->F12 are available other that that.

  2393. March is almost here.  I have committed to release a v1.0 sometime in
  2394. this month, and it is important to do so.  This will undoubtable mean
  2395. that v1.0 will not have all of the features on my to-do list.  That 
  2396. list has been growing at a fast pace, and some long-time entries have
  2397. not yet been addressed.
  2398.  
  2399. Releasing a v1.0 is a mere formality to me ... work will not cease, and
  2400. I will continue to upgrade the product quickly.  I'm pushing it with
  2401. once-a-week releases, I will probably drop back to every 2 weeks, with
  2402. "specials" in between, when warranted.

  2404. I anxiously await the release of the two major competitors' updates.  Right
  2405. now they have a bit of an advantage, as my work is out in the open and 
  2406. there's still a bit of mystery as to what to expect from "them".  I can't
  2407. wait to have some visible and relatively static new targets :).  And there's
  2408. the key ... I do not believe that the competitors can maintain the pace
  2409. that I intend to keep.  Only one has the resources, but they also have the
  2410. most overhead.  We'll see.  It will be interesting.

  2419. o   Editing template sections is now more reliable.  Problems with changing
  2420.     the size of a section have been fixed.

  2422. o   TCP/IP updates w/regards to SMTP sends ... minor bug with one 
  2423.     user's host.  Some other changes with POP3 receives and odd packet
  2424.     sizes.

  2426. o   Replies crashing on send from folders AND navigation being disabled
  2427.     upon incoming mail.  This was a tricky one to fix, but I believe it's
  2428.     reliable now.  When a message was being copied/moved to a folder
  2429.     (including the copies done by incoming filters), the entire folder
  2430.     index was reloaded, invalidating the previously loaded memory image
  2431.     of any one that was open.  Fixed.
  2432.  
  2433. o   Ah.  I have dusted off my assembler books.  MR/2 ICE now includes 
  2434.     two small assembler routines for manipulating message contents.  
  2435.     This code was applied to some new areas, so existing code will not 
  2436.     increase in speed.  However, I see many places where things can be 
  2437.     made snappier with some assembler applied.  I will start to do this 
  2438.     over time, probably more realistically AFTER v1.0.  I once wrote a 
  2439.     database code generator and report writer (under CTOS/BTOS)  that 
  2440.     blew away all the competition w/regards to speed (and features, too 
  2441.     :).  I accredited the speed to a small core set of assembler 
  2442.     helpers.  I will apply the same technology to MR/2 ICE.

  2444. o   ALT-Q, paste with quote, now wraps better (by removing previous line
  2445.     breaks).

  2447. o   Minors:  RMB invocation of explore.exe will clean up URL's better.
  2448.     Updated the default template file for forwards.  Preparing for the

  2450.     files.  Edit menu would disable entries when switching "back" to 
  2451.     the source message ("<" button) that were never reenabled.  Fixed.
  2452.     New reply-time variable: @SignatureFile@ that doesn't yet have
  2453.     a use :)  Spell checker buglets, a couple accelerator issues, etc.,.

  2455. o   POP receives.  Yet another strange case where lost data occured was 
  2456.     plugged. This was due to a connection disconnect and a subsequent 
  2457.     hurried closing if ICE my the user, but it still had ugly results.  
  2458.     This effected PURGE mode only.  I have cleaned up the warning 
  2459.     message so as not to invoke unneeded panic and fixed it so that the 
  2460.     same actions will not lose messages.  NOTE that I have also removed 
  2461.     a "cleanup by purging old messages" loop that may result in dupes.  
  2462.     Maybe.  Better this than lost data, IMO.

  2464. o   Oh, yes!  Almost forgot (Cheryl :-).  I added persistence when 
  2465.     dropping a font on the INBOX.  If this works OK, I'll add 
  2466.     it to the others. This is a test ... colors are pending, but 
  2467.     dragging a font to the inbox should "stick".  There are some kinks, 
  2468.     most w/regards to non CP850 fonts that will be fixed next release.

  2470. o   I have added some code to Filters that enables a REXX script to be 
  2471.     executed upon a filter match.  This is preliminary and spawns a 
  2472.     command shell for now, until I rework it.  I also have an example 
  2473.     script that I will use to maintain, over time, an automated mailing 
  2474.     list.  The file is provided as maillist.ccc ... you should copy
  2475.     this to a .cmd file.  I will only update the .ccc file, so that 
  2476.     overwriting any modifications you may make will be avoided.  To 
  2477.     invoke this file at this time.  I use this as so:

  2497. 1.  The movement between open folders issue was brought to my attention
  2498.     again just now.  This, after a bit of a rough discussion on Usenet
  2499.     not long ago.  As I explained that I didn't, personally, like PM Mail's
  2500.     setup for folders, I remembered another gadget I had coded to help here.
  2501.     The Windows menu.  Has anyone ever looked at this with a bunch of 
  2502.     windows/folders open?  You should!  It's a quick and dirty index into
  2503.     almost any open and accessible MR/2 Window.  The same menu is on the
  2504.     main notebook as well as each message window.  Editor windows are not
  2505.     listed, but are on my todo's.  Just a subtle "fun fact".

  2507. 2.  Installation over existing setups causes constant concerns.  And 
  2508.     questions.  I have built the ZIP files so that the risk of overwriting
  2509.     user-modified files is slim.  So, USUALLY, it is safe to simply unzip
  2510.     a new distribution set over an existing setup.  I WILL RECCOMMEND, as
  2511.     always, to backup the MR/2 ICE base directory, as a precaution.  This
  2512.     also gives you protection against a newly introduced bug that might
  2513.     render your mail system unworkable.

  2527. write him, but he's pretty quick about grabbing released anyway!

  2696.     new and messes with the heart of my email delivery engine.  It still 
  2697.     has worked flawlessly here.  The Filter Maintenance form gives away 
  2698.     many of my ideas, and there were even some I believe to be original!  
  2699.     It all starts under the Utility menu.

  2701.     There are many areas of the Filter form that are disabled, as the
  2702.     code to support them is not there yet.  What you have at this time is
  2703.     a pick of simple or freeform search criteria.  You can copy/move a
  2704.     matching messages into a specific folder, if desired.  You can then
  2705.     choose to keep the message in the inbox or delete it from the inbox.
  2706.     If no folder is specified, and you delete the message, it is the
  2707.     same as "killing" it.

  2710.     or phrase (multiple words inside double quotes!).  Boolean symbols are

  3150.     the size parsing and I think I've got all the bases covered now.

  3152. o   Also saw some extra work being done by MR/2 ICE, because of the 
  3153.     buffer size I chose.  By increasing my buffer size internally by one 
  3154.     character, I've cut down the number of packets transfered on some 
  3155.     system ... by half! My bet is that the size issue is common

  3157. o   POP3 receive ... closing of messages invoked a cleanup filter
  3158.     that was horribly inefficient.  I spent a short time on this and sped
  3159.     it up tremendously, most noticable with large (uuencoded) messages.

  3162.     the last-read counter on each successful read.  Previously, on error,

  3190.     remember and enforce the specified password.  Folder lists are now

  3193.     I'll allow you to change this next time.

  3195. o   I almost forgot ... I added some code to the logic that is triggered
  3196.     the very first time you run MR/2 ICE.  The program invokes the
  3197.     settings notebook, then immediately explains the common Cirrus Logic
  3198.     video bug that exists, and asks you if you see the settings tabs.
  3199.     If you respond that the BUG does indeed exists, MR/2 ICE sets up
  3200.     a "forced /F9" command line flag.  You can override this with a
  3201.     command line switch, and I'll have this option on the settings form

  3205.     files do not exist on your system, MR/2 will now pop up a text

  3219. I did alot this week, but I don't have much to list.  I spend tons of
  3220. time finalizing the registration scheme.  I will start sending
  3221. registration keys via email very soon.  I fixed a dozen or so bugs, 
  3222. but I wrote no details down.  I started several really neat ideas, 
  3223. but can't even hint at them until I'm further along :).
  3224.  
  3225. I expect the next 2 weeks to consist of filling in gaps and crossing off
  3226. items on my bug list.  This includes the uglies in the area of Folders.
  3227. I have started "filters", but this is a biggie and will take a bit of
  3228. time.  At least for what I want to do :).  I worked more than I should
  3229. have trying to get printing problems resolved.  I made progress, I was
  3230. able to identify much of the problem ... waiting for Secant's Component
  3231. division to give me some time to fix it.  I expect this to be soon :)

  3233. o   Pop-up "context" menus in the viewer and message editor.  Use the
  3234.     RMB to quickly cut, copy, append, paste, reply, forward and send.
  3235.     There are some other options, and some disabled items waiting for
  3236.     completion.  Oh, the speller and thesaurus entries are enabled,
  3237.     but appear only on the Editor side.
  3238.     
  3239.     NOTICE, please, the Web Browser and FTP entries on this menu.
  3240.     Click on any fully qualified URL and select one of these to invoke
  3241.     a separate session.  Configuration is called for, but it is 
  3242.     functional as it stands.  I launch the commands EXPLORE or FTP,
  3243.     depending on what you select.  If you use some other browser or 
  3244.     FTP client (I use ncFtp), simply make an EXPLORE.CMD or an FTP.CMD
  3245.     in the MR/2 ICE directory.  For example, my ftp.cmd file looks like:

  3258.     another session is loading it.

  3260. o   Fixed a case where the accent character (`) was used in a subject
  3261.     field and blew up my cell box (inbox) code.  I selected this code
  3262.     as my field delimiter.  All of my index entries now filter for this
  3263.     character.

  3266.     a pick-list button to work.  Other minor fixes.

  3268.     BTW, groups do not work with POP3 sends.  I have to think about

  3271.     contrary to how POP sending works.

  3287. o   Address Groups are now "in" and seem to be functioning well.  There 
  3288.     has been a minimal of testing, tho.  I personally created a couple 
  3289.     of small groups that worked well.  I also created three larger 
  3290.     groups, all external-file based.  One contained all of my original 
  3291.     beta testers, one contained all users who have registered to-date, 
  3292.     and the third combined these two by "including" the two lists by 
  3293.     tag.
  3294.     
  3295.     I have tried to come up with a very flexible group-addressing scheme,
  3296.     but in doing so, may have made it look a little more complex than
  3297.     it really is.  Groups can be simple lists of individual addresses,
  3298.     all maintained online.  Groups can also be mixes of individual
  3299.     addresses, address book tags, other group tags, and "address from
  3300.     file" entries.  I have included code to prevent circular references,
  3301.     but the error messages/warnings are weak at this time.
  3302.     
  3303.     An address file is simply a text file (I started using the file
  3304.     extension ".lst") that contains one address entry per line.  Great
  3305.     for those of us who keep lists generated from "other" programs.
  3306.     Oh, yes, these entries can also be address book tags, group tags or
  3307.     other file references.
  3308.     
  3309.     THE one thing sorely missing is a "pick group" button on the header
  3310.     entry form and the Pick Group button on address entry needs to be
  3311.     hooked to the same code.  Next release.  Groups WILL popup in the
  3312.     RMB menu, if the appropriate checkbox is marked.
  3313.     
  3314.     As a short example, you could easily create a group that references
  3315.     three other groups.  Each of these groups could reference whatever
  3316.     they needed to ... more groups, addresses from a file, address
  3317.     book entries and/or individual addresses.
  3318.     
  3319.     I'm open for comments.  Try it out, let me know what you think, and
  3320.     feel free to give me your ideas :).

  3322.     Oh, one last note.  Group address entries can be disabled.  To toggle
  3323.     the checkmarks, you can euse the "edit" button on each, but clicking
  3324.     ON THE LISTBOX CHECKMARK will also toggle it.

  3326. o   Importing text CLOSE to 64K would chop a small portion of the text.
  3327.     This became acutely apparent when I tried to send a UUEncoded file
  3328.     that was about 63K.  The problem was the import into the MLE ... I
  3329.     had the "switch to my pieces-parts import" threshold set too close
  3330.     to the MLE's chop-point.  Fixed.
  3331.     
  3332. o   Font selection ... for some silly reason I was showing only BitMap
  3333.     fonts.  That will teach me to steal code from sample programs 
  3334.     without studying it closer :).  Fixed.

  3336. o   Template processing would sometimes remove the "@" symbol in email
  3337.     addresses and other tokens that were supposed to have them.  I believe
  3338.     I fixed this, but it warrants some time-testing.

  3340. o   Hint Bubbles!!! (Tool Tips, whatever you want to call them).  
  3341.     They're fixed, at least as far as speed goes.  I was able to get 
  3342.     some of Mike's time (Mike is Secant's OS/2 Control "guru" :) to look 
  3343.     at what was going on.  A couple of code snips here and there, and
  3344.     we're operating at blinding speeds.  You should be able to turn these
  3345.     on without noticably effecting performance.  NOTE that for MAXIMUM
  3346.     performance, they should still be off ... even faster, creating
  3347.     20 tiny windows still takes time.
  3348.     
  3349. o   Crashes on program load.  Some of these (all?  Too wishfull a thought,
  3350.     I guess) were caused by my changes to the way the printing system
  3351.     is initialized.  If your system had NO OS/2 PRINTER DRIVER installed
  3352.     you would probably crash.  If you had a driver with an internal name
  3353.     that did not have a '.' as part of it ... sme thing [My home system
  3354.     had an old IBMNULL with no '.', and when I switched to that printer,
  3355.     crash!].  These have been fixed, although printing itself is still 
  3356.     being worked on.
  3357.     
  3358. o   NOTE:  an early report of Object Desktop's Tabbed Launchpad crashing
  3359.     ICE on load.  This started with a recent update/path to their v1.02
  3360.     level.  Running ICE with the /T switch worked-around this, as did
  3361.     not invoking the tabbed launchpad.  They've been notified, write to
  3362.     them if this incoveniences you.
  3363.     
  3364. o   Thesaurus and Speller limits were still in a few obscure places
  3365.     (reported as "Unregistered User" limits).  These weren't supposed
  3366.     to be there, and I've removed the ones I can see.  I don't believe
  3367.     there are any more.

  3369. o   Message received from some UUCP gateways were crashing ICE on reply.
  3370.     This was due to invalid date formats in the source message's header.
  3371.     I would assume I had a good date and crash on trying to use it.

  3373.     if the date is invalid.  Maybe not the best technique, but certainly
  3374.     better than crashing :)

  3382.     up to 20 times at one second intervals before giving up.

  3396.     Address Group Maintenance is disabled.  It is relatively functional, 
  3397.     barring a few bugs, and can be enabled by running with the "//" flag 
  3398.     on the command line.  This is just so those interested can comment 
  3399.     on the overall layout.  It is NOT meant for real use, and may change 
  3400.     before finalized.  SENDS do not recognize Groups yet.
  3401.     
  3402.     In general, groups will allow for lists of raw addresses, aliases, 
  3403.     other groups and/or lists of all of these contained within an 
  3404.     external file.  Resolution will be fully recursive/nested, so that a 
  3405.     group can be defined as a set of other groups, and each of those can 
  3406.     contain more groups.  Address Book entries can contain group names, 
  3407.     also.  I will add code to prevent circular references.

  3543. added some code to try and help.  Ironically, since doing this, I have
  3544. been unable to make it crash.  I may have fixed it while making other  
  3545. code changes, but only time will tell.  Reporting crash addresses is

  3549. they'd like to share?  I've had many requests for conversion tools, and
  3550. I'd certainly like to supply them, and I know I can.  Time is the 
  3551. problem.  I can see how to convert PMMail's stuff to my format, but if 
  3552. I stop to do this, I don't get to add important features to my own work.
  3553. Any REXX guru's want to show there stuff off and get some recognition?
  3554. Of particular interest are scripts that would convert address books and
  3555. folders from PM Mail, Post Road Mailer, Ultimail/LaMail and things like
  3556. PINE.

  3629. until I release v1.0.

  3631. o   Removed the Edit signature file menu item.  I added much code to 
  3632.     this feature, but it isn't yet workable (made a bigger monster
  3633.     than originally planned out of the editor).  This will be readded

  3637.     for "mr2i.sig".  Note that the sig file itself is just a very simple

  3641.     selectable reply templates are you want, each with custom

  3680.     "default".  I have a system in-house that exhibits this problem, so

  3711.     TCPIP etc\serviced file and changing the POP entry, I added a
  3712.     command line /P option.  Specifying "Mr2i /P1111" will cause ICE
  3713.     to try the port number 1111 for POP3 services.

  3715. o   When the settings were changed to turn word wrap off, MR/2 would
  3716.     fail to quote text correctly.  Also, the word wrap column changes
  3717.     were always reset to the default, nomatter what you changed them to.

  3771.     main index menu enables tabs.  Since "news" was not yet functional,
  3772.     these tabs simply wasted screen area.  Tabs were also reduced in size,
  3773.     for when they *do* display.
