The Steward FAQ List Version 0.3 6 June 1996
1. What is Steward?
Steward is a mailing list processor written in Rexx. It handles all basic
mailing list functions, digests, and archives. Steward is designed to work
with the NeoLogic Inet.Mail for OS/2 mail server program. However, Steward is
written in Rexx and is general enough to work with many mailing programs and
operating systems.
2. Why is it called Steward?
It's not listserv, it's not Majordomo, Steward was the best name I found
in my thesaurus after that :-)
3. Does it have to be called Steward?
No. Just set the WhoAmI variable in the steward.cf file to whatever name
you want Steward to work as.
4. Who wrote it?
Paul Hethmon. Email: phethmon@utk.edu.
5. Is it like Majordomo?
Yes. Steward was written after a frustrating try to make Majordomo work with
a non-Unix system, namely OS/2. Many of the things in Majordomo are Unix and
sendmail specific, it was easier to write a new mailing list processor than
work around the problems.
However, Steward behaves very similarly to Majordomo in the commands it accepts.
6. Is it like Listserv?
As much as Majordomo is. Long answer: Steward is modeled after Majordomo,
not listserv. I really didn't look at the listserv commands. Most of the
basic stuff like subscribe and unsubscribe will be the same.
7. What if I have a question?
You can join an email list called "steward-users" by sending email to
"steward@hops.ag.utk.edu". Put "subscribe steward-users" in the body
of your message.
8. What do I do when someone subscribes with an address like
"user@host.com", but then sends mail from an address "user@machine.host.com"?
In the list configuration file is an option to not check whether someone
is a member of the list. By setting the "OpenPosting" option to 1, Steward
will bypass the member check letting anyone post to the list.
