  7. What this software does
  8. -----------------------
  9.  
  10. The Binary Newsreader (BNR) is designed for easy downloading and decoding
  11. single- and multipart binary files which are UUE- or BASE-64 (Mime format)
  12. encoded from Internet newsgroups.
  13.  
  14. Exactly! It's made for all these alt.binaries... newsgroups.
  15.  
  16. - True 32-bit application, designed for OS/2 Warp V3 and V4
  17. - Uses OS/2 features like multithreading, drag/drop, object oriented execution
  18. - User-friendly configuration notebook
  19. - BNR is multithreaded!
  20. - You can stop and restart any time during the download. You can even discon-
  21.   nect from the network and continue working after reconnecting without re-
  22.   starting the reader or reloading the newsgroup.
  23. - Ability to connect multi-part-files. You do not have to attach downloaded
  24.   UUE-files prior to the decoding process (the way you have to do in NR/2).

  32. Getting started
  33. ---------------

  35. - You need an UUE-Decoder and a BASE64/Mime-Decoder installed. I suggest to use
  36.   the combinded UUE/BASE64/Mime-Decoder UUDEVIEW, written by Frank Pilhofer.
  37.   You can get it from 'ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/os2/unix/uudvdos2.zip' or from
  38.   'http://www.dataline.ch/~rch/uudvdos2.zip' (which might not be the most
  39.   recent version).

  41. - Copy the BNR files into a new directory and start the software calling
  42.   BNR.EXE
  43.  
  44. - Select 'Create desktop folder' from the 'Configure' Pulldown menu. This
  45.   creates the necessary desktop objects for you.
  46.  
  47. - From this new BNR folder you can access the BNR documentation which is
  48.   written in the popular HTML format.

  67. - BNR uses a separate TCP/IP connection for every newsserver request (get sta-
  68.   tus, get article subjects, send NNTP command, post, get list of newsgroups,
  69.   update list of newsgroups). BNR connects and disconnects automatically;
  70.   therefore, the 'Connect' and 'Disconnect' option have been removed from the
  71.   'File' pulldown menu. The '/C' commandline option becomes obsolete. This
  72.   also solves the problem that newsservers often disconnect clients after a
  73.   period of time.

  75. - Article headers are received using a separate thread (No busy cursor
  76.   anymore). You can cancel this thread using the ESC key.

  78. - The position and size of the configuration notebook is saved.
  79.  
  80. - Two new options have been added on a 2nd 'Filter' page of the configuration
  81.   notebook: The first option allows to limit the number of article headers to
  82.   be received. The second new option allows to specify the minimum number of
  83.   lines an article must have. Articles headers with a line count less than the
  84.   value specified are not being displayed. Be aware that you can suppress
  85.   the last (too small) part of a multi-part file if you enable this feature.
  86.   Both options are also available on the 'Override filters' window when
  87.   overriding filters at runtime.

  89. - There is a new button when overriding the filters at runtime to clear
  90.   all filters

  92. - Fix: The subscribtion date was not set when using the Cut/Paste function of
  93.   the newsgroup manager editor.

  95. - You can post with your real Mail-ID but without your name

  97. - You can use the Web-Browser of your choice

  99. - A new notebook page 'Logging' offers a set of loggings options when
  100.   executing BNR scripts. There are 7 more script commands available (END,
  101.   GOTO, ONERROR, LABEL, MESSAGE, TRACE and FILTER) to add user defined error
  102.   processing to scripts.

  104. - Warp V4 (Merlin) users have the new 'Merlin-style' notebooks
  105.  
  106. - You can move entries to the top of the receiver job queue
  107.  
  108. - The additional script command EXECUTE provides a handy way to execute OS/2
  109.   commands while processing scripts

  111. - Use the new %N variable in your decoder command to pass the name of the
  112.   current newsgroup to the decoder. With this, you can decode the articles
  113.   of different newsgroups to different subdirectories.

  115. - You can add generic E-Mail IDs to the blocklist. They must have the format
  116.   *@myhost.net. This would exclude all posts submitted by an E-Mail address
  117.   at myhost.net.
