Q1: Do I have to remove any drivers from config.sys, or uninstall
anything?
A: No. Paradise doesn't care about other drivers. If you ever
want to uninstall Paradise, just REM it out of your config.sys.
Q2: Can I still use the XG card as a MIDI MPU playback device?
A: Yes. Using Paradise MIDI software, you can even run XG DSP and
MIDI playback at the same time. When you start XG DSP, it will
reset the MIDI section to default values, so if you plan on playing
MIDI while using XG DSP, you should start XG DSP before MIDI playback,
and just leave it running.
Note: tMidi resets the MPU at each file play, so it cannot be used
with XG DSP. The future Paradise MIDI system will provide
workarounds. While you can do both at the same time (play MIDI and
use the DSP section), it's probably not something you actually will
be doing at the same time. No harm results in doing this in any case.
Q3: How can I save my presets, and why does it show ordering information?
A: Register. Once you have your personalized license and registration code
you can save your presets, and you don't have to look at the order info.
Q4: Why not put everything in one window?
A: There was not enough desktop space; 800x600 is the minimum recommended
resolution to use XG DSP effectively, even with the multiple windows.
Q5: For how long is my registration valid?
A: At least through the current version, so any 1.xx license is valid
for all 1.xx version levels.
Q6: I have an MU-80. Will XG DSP work with it?
A: It should. Some of the mixer volume controls may not be available
since they are only currently available in the SW60XG. XG DSP uses
dual-mono mode (this is true stereo, and is so named since each
channel (left and right) can be independently controlled).
Q7: How can I best setup my soundcard(s), stereo system, and XG DSP?
A: There are a lot of variations possible:
If you have just the SW60XG and want to use it as a DSP for your
stereo, simply connect it to be in the tape monitor loop. When you
switch it in (see your amp's manual, but typically just select the
tape monitor switch that you have the XG in, then select the REC OUT
so that it is to the source you want to "record" (send to the XG),
for example, CD. With this hookup, before going to the power amp,
the music CD signal goes to the XG (controlled by XG DSP) and then
to the amp. The effects that can be added really are fine, and it's
a bargain even if you only use the XG for this one purpose; many
DSPs cost more than $1000, and even those cannot compare to the
configurability of the SW60XG and XG DSP.
If you have more than one sound card, and you have more than one
tape monitor loop, you can hook both soundcards up and switch between
them. You can even send a music CD source (or mic) to the XG and from
there to a sampler on the other tape monitor. If you don't have two
tape monitors you can still accomplish the same tasks, though you'll
have to patch (un/plug) manually to get the hook up you need to work with.
In my system, I have the XG on tape 1, an equalizer on tape 2, and
the sampler card on the equalizer's tape monitor. Anything that can
be done I can do by just changing front-panel controls.
Registered users can ask me for assistance in hooking things up, but
there are no guarantees since some equipment out there is half-baked
(for example, tape monitors without a record/source selector).
Q8: I started XG DSP and see it in the task list, but not onscreen.
A: If this happens, exit XG DSP (select CLOSE from the Task List) and
restart it with the -nolp switch. After this, exit XG DSP, remove the
-nolp switch, and start again. (Also see the README file.)
Q9: Why is there a price discount for Direct-To-Author?
A: The Direct-To-Author method of payment is by land mail and requires
no overhead so the cost is passed on to your (there's no exta staff, no
phones, no credit card charges, etc.). Orders may take up to 10 business
days to process before shipping when using the Direct-To-Author payment.
Use _order.frm to order Direct-To-Author.
For fastest response, but without the 20% discount, use the _order.cc
and contact BMT to place your order.
