Galleria and Galleria/CM
------------------------
Version 2.31 - July 18, 1996
DESCRIPTION:
Galleria and Galleria/CM together provide a sophisticated yet easy to
use environment for the display, editing, printing, conversion, scanning
and capture of bitmapped images for 32-bit Intel-based systems using IBM
OS/2 2.1, 2.11, Warp 3.0, Warp Connect or OS/2 for Windows. Both are
high-performance tools which exploit OS/2 features such as large memory
space and multiple threads. As Presentation Manager applications, they
feature ease of use and full interoperability with other applications on
the desktop.
Galleria is general purpose tool for the management of bitmapped images.
It provides a window for the display of images at varying resolutions
on all OS/2-supported display subsystems (up to 24-bit). Images can be
read from the OS/2 clipboard or from disk in numerous formats. Direct
support is provided for input from HP ScanJet desktop scanners. Once
loaded, the displayed image can be edited (cropped, resized, rotated
etc.) and converted to monochrome or grayscale. The modified image can be
transferred to other applications via the clipboard or saved on disk in a
different format. Monochrome or color printed output can also be
generated.
Galleria reads and writes common bitmap file formats including BMP, GIF,
JPEG, PCX, PNG, Targa, TIFF and WPG, plus OS/2 metafiles. Full support is
provided for the import of Kodak Photo CD and Pro Photo CD images.
Additional features include drag/drop support, a browse facility with
saved thumbnails, a file search function, multi-level undo/redo, filters,
the ability to create saved lists for screen shows, a floating zoom
window and limited DDE capability.
Galleria/CM (Capture Module) can take a snapshot of the current OS/2
desktop contents and copy the resultant image to the clipboard, disk or
printer. Galleria can also be invoked automatically for post-processing
of the captured image. An options dialog enables selection of either the
full desktop, window or region for the capture.
Galleria/CM operations can be controlled from either an icon on the
desktop or the keyboard (with the Print Screen key).
Online manuals for both Galleria and Galleria/CM are provided as part of
the package.

INSTALLATION:
To install the software, online documentation etc. you must run the
INSTALL.EXE utility provided. This graphical utility will prompt you for
destination directories and installation options. All tasks performed as
part of the installation process will be displayed in a scrollable log.
This utility can also be used to fully de-install the software.
For an Individual license, the software may be installed on a single
machine only. Enable all installation options. On completion of the
install process, you will have a new folder on your desktop with icons
for the software and documentation. You can then start the software or
read documentation by double-clicking on the respective icons. The first
time you start Galleria or Galleria/CM you will be prompted for your
license details.
For a Corporate license, you have the option of proceeding as per an
Individual license above or, alternatively, you can first install a copy
of the software on a file server. For each LAN-attached client, run the
installation utility entering the full path name of the directories on
the server and deselect the option to copy files. The folder and icons
created on the desktop will reference the server copy of the software.
The first time you start Galleria or Galleria/CM you will be prompted for
your license details.
When installing the software on a large number of machines (up to the
maximum permitted by your license) you may want to preset options for
each install. See the "Replicating installation options" section in the
online help of the installation utility for more information.
A customized copy of this software with license details incorporated is
available on request to Corporate licensees with a 100+ user license.
Note: If you have a previous version of this software installed, you must
ensure that any old versions of the library (BITWAREx.DLL) files are
either overwritten by the INSTALL.EXE utility provided, or otherwise
deleted.
EVALUATION:
When not licensed, this software is provided for evaluation purposes
only. You have thirty (30) days to complete evaluation. After this
period, should you decide not to purchase a license, this software must
be completely removed from your disk using the INSTALL.EXE provided.
For evaluation, enter "DEMO" in the license name field when the software
is started. In this mode, the following features are disabled:
o Saving files and lists to disk
o Printing
o Retention of preferences and settings across sessions
o Option to save thumbnails as Extended Attributes
Full functionality will be enabled by entry of valid license details at
startup.

HP SCANJET SUPPORT:
Galleria will support scanning with the HP ScanJet family of desktop
scanners provided that you have the appropriate OS/2 driver installed.
This driver could be provided by HP (none currently exists), a third-
party driver, or the BITWARE9.SYS included in this package and placed
in your installation directory.
The BITWARE9.SYS driver supports HP ScanJets when attached to any OS/2
supported SCSI adapter. It does *not* directly support the HP-supplied
controller card. To use the BITWARE9.SYS driver you must manually add
the following statements to CONFIG.SYS:
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
DEVICE=d:\directory\BITWARE9.SYS
changing the directory name in the DEVICE statement as appropriate. Turn
the scanner on and re-boot OS/2. Scan options should now appear in the
Galleria File menu. If you experience conflicts with other ASPI-based
scanner drivers you may need to modify the following statement in
CONFIG.SYS:
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /SHARE
If you experience an error the first time the scanner is accessed, select
"Retry" from the options displayed.
DISPLAY DRIVER PROBLEMS:
Galleria, as a graphics-intensive application, demands a high level of
support from display drivers. It is recommended that you ensure that you
have the latest version of display driver installed for your display
adapter type prior to installation.
With most errors (including exceptions, incorrect colors or scrolling
problems), this is normally an indication that the display driver
currently installed does not fully support the default display mode
used by Galleria. These problems may disappear if you change the driver
settings to use a different color depth. If not, you should be able to
bypass the problem by enabling the "Use fallback display mode for screen
writes" option in the Galleria Preferences dialog. For a permanent fix,
contact the vendor of your display adapter for an updated driver.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:
Memory requirements will depend on the size of the image being processed
and level of edits required. In most cases performance can be improved by
setting the pre-allocated size of your SWAPPER.DAT file to a large value
(eg. 16MB). The SWAPPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS would look something
like this:
SWAPPATH=d:\ 4096 16384
DDE TOOLKIT:
A DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) toolkit is available which demonstrates how
to drive Galleria from your own application for the loading and display
of images. The DDE interface implemented is not intended to enable
Galleria to be used as a general purpose server, but specifically to add
image handling capabilities to other applications lacking this support.
The toolkit consists of the full C language source, IBM C Set++ makefile
etc. of a simple OS/2 PM client. You are free to model your own client on
this sample program.
The sample client source is included in the demo package or on the floppy
as DDE.ZIP.
