#############################################################################
Season 1 (1980-1981) ########################################################
1.1ab 001 12/11/80 Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii
written by Donald P.Bellisario, Glen A. Larson
directed by Roger Young
guest stars Pamela Shoop, Allen Williams, Eugenia Wright, Fritz Weaver
Magnum's best friend Dan Cook is accused of smuggling Cocaine after he died
during a dubious transaction.
info
VMO2, an actual unit now stationed in S. California, is painted on the
sides of the chopper seen in flashbacks. The famous VMO2 cap Thomas and
T. C. wear more than any other (Thomas wears his VMO2 cap more than twice
as often as his Detroit Tigers cap.) will not be seen until the episode
"Tropical Madness".
The blue jeans, TM is often seen wearing are Seafarer Bellbottom
Dungarees....these were worn by U.S. Navy enlisted personnel as work
pants, they were not issue, but were approved for use. Often tied to a
length of rope and thrown overboard into the ocean for hours at a time to
properly season them before wearing.
Actor Jeff MacKay (_Tales From The Gold Monkey_)
appears as "Ski". He will take up his role as Lt. Mac Reynolds, or "Mac"
in "Missing In Action". W. K. Stratton, "Ensign Healy", will appear again
as a crooked cop in "Wave Goodbye". Judge Rinehold (_Fast Times At
Ridgemont High_) has a small role as "Seaman Wolfe". And Robert Loggia
(_Wild Palms_) who plays Felipe/LaBule will direct the episodes
"Never Again...Never Again" and "Missing In Action".
1.2 002 12/18/80 China Doll
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Donald P. Bellisario
guest stars Susie Elena, George Cheung, Marvin Wong
Mai Ling asks Magnum to take care of a precious vase for her antiquary
store. Suddenly, T.C is beaten and Mai Ling gets kidnapped...
info
This is the first episode in which Thomas wears his Tigers cap. Notice
the Team Ring incorrectly worn on his left hand! This costuming error
carries on through "J. 'Digger' Doyle". Actor Lee De Broux appears again
in "The Arrow That Is Not Aimed" and "Old Acquaintance". George Cheung
appears again in "Holmes Is Where The Heart Is".
1.3 003 12/25/80 Thank Heaven for Little Girls and Big Ones, Too
written by Frank Lupo
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Katherine Cannon, Lauri Hendler, Shannon Brady, Jim Demarest
This is our first Christmas with TM. The new painting in Masters' house is
a Gauguin worth 2 million Marks. A group of five school girls from Vermont
call Magnum to seek for their teacher they lost. Her name is Ms. Linda
Booten, she is an Art teacher with a Masters Degree from Brown Univ., and
is a Phi Beta Kappa. But the girls are only interested in the painting...
info
Kapiolani war memorial park/water stadium is used as a filming location
again in "The Treasure of Kalaniopu'u", "Missing Melody",
and "Death And Taxes".
The hotel desk clerk is reading Robin Master's "Fruit of Passion".
Editing error: water is present on the pool deck where Rick comes out
of the pool, before he comes out of the pool.
Rick is driving his red Datsun 280 SX.
Jim Demarrest stars as the excessively sweaty art
dealer/forger/kidnapper/thief and ultimate dupe. Best line of the ep:
"She shouldn't be punished for her passion." TM's Christmas present
to Higgins: The real Gauguin in a mailing tube with red ribbon.
TM & TC get into only one fight.
1.4 004 01/08/81 No Need to Know
written by Frank Lupo
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Robin Dearden, Ed Grover, Gene Hamilton, Richard Johnson
Higgins' old commander vacations at Robin's Nest. But he's also being
hunted by the I.R.A.
info
Notice Thomas' taste for Brandy. Later in "From Moscow to Maui" we see
that he keeps Scotch and Brandy in the guest house's decanters. In fact,
Scotch runs second behind beer as his favorite "recreational" beverage
("Don't Say Goodbye" and "Resolutions" among others), followed closely by
Brandy. Beer is his overwhelming favorite. Thomas drinks 119 bottles of
beer over the course of the entire 8-year series!
Richard Johnson reappears as Brigadier General Allistair Folkes in
"Faith and Begorrah".
1.5 005 01/15/81 Skin Deep
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Cathie Sheriff, Ian McShane, Ron Masak
A woman kills herself with a rifle the same way like in the book of her
next film. She parted from her friend David Norman who thinks, she parted
because of a new lover. He believes she was murdered, so he calls Magnum.
info
In this ep. Magnum makes his first reference to writing a book on how to
be a world-class private investigator. The episode is dedicated to camera
technician Robert VanDerKar who died in a helicopter crash during filming.
The F.A.A. investigation yielded no pilot or crew error to explain the
crash. And Bellisario, a huge fan of helicopters, decided to continue to
use them heavily both in front of the camera and behind it. Actor Ian
McShane (_The Lovejoy Mysteries_) appears again in "Black On White".
1.6 006 01/22/81 Never Again, Never Again
written by Babs Greyhosky
directed by Robert Loggia
guest stars Hanna Hertelendy, Robert Ellenstein, Earl Kingston

up his regular role as "Doctor Ibold" in the ep. "Try To Remember".
1.7 007 01/29/81 The Ugliest Dog in Hawaii
written by Donald P. Bellisario, Frank Lupo, Chris Bunch, Allan Cole
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Paul Gale, Michael Gazzo, Kathleen Nolan, Shawn Hoskins
Mrs. Marston's expensive dog Algie is in danger of getting kidnapped.
Magnum has to work for his security during the 4 weeks of quarantaine.
info
Parts of this ep. are filmed on the Makai Research Pier on the windward
coast of Oahu between the Eve Anderson Estate (used for Robin's Nest) and
the Sea Life Park. The pier is not used as chopper pad and headquarters
for Island Hoppers until much later in the series. It is used again in
"From Moscow to Maui". This is the first ep. in which Mike Post (who went
to high school with Selleck) and Pete Carpenter handle the music for the
series. Ian Freebairn-Smith did the music for the series premiere and
then that same music was used for every episode until this one.
1.8 008 02/05/81 Missing in Action
written by Ken Pettus, Frank Lupo, Craig Buck
directed by Robert Loggia
guest stars Rebecca Holden, F. Lagueruela, Lance LeGault
Laura, a singer currently working for the K.K.C., sees in visions her
lover who is Missing In Action. She searches for him in Hawaii.
info
The building used for the King Kamehameha Club is in actuality the
Honolulu Elks' Club. Lance LeGault (_The A-Team_) plays Special Agent
Newton and returns in "Memories Are Forever" to take up his regular role
as Marine Colonel "Buck" Greene.
1.9 009 02/12/81 Lest We Forget
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars A. Lockhart, June Lockhart, M. Ferrer, Scatman Crothers

because she is blackmailing him.
info
Cast guests include Anne Lockhart (_Dark Tower_) who guests in "Flashback",
Miguel Ferrer (_The Stand_), and Scatman Crothers (_The Shining_).
June Lockhart and Mel Ferrer guest starred with her daughter and his son.
Ms. Lockhart and Mr. Ferrer were major stars in the BW movie era. Their kids
played the younger versions of the characters the parents played.
1.10 010 02/19/81 The Curse of the King Kamehameha Club
written by Babs Greyhosky
directed by Rick Kolbe
guest stars Gretchen Corbett, Lew Ayres, Manu Tupou
The King Kamehameha-Club has got money problems. At this moment, a Kahuna
curses the Club and everything goes wrong - a man dies on the beach, the
kitchen burns, Rick gets ill...
info
Notice the King Kamehameha Club patch. It appears again in "I Witness".
Oahu's Queen Emma Summer Palace is used as a filming location in this ep.
and in many others such as "Holmes Is Where The Heart Is", "Of Sound Mind",
and "Forever In Time". Gretchen Corbett appears again in "The Look".
1.11 011 02/26/81 Thicker Than Blood
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Vincent Carisi, Andre Philippe
T.C. is in trouble after misunderstood sense of duty.
info
This is the only ep. in which Thomas and T. C. come to blows.

directed by Ron Satlof

Magnum searches for the father of Cindy Lewellyn. But Cindy isn't the
only one who wants to find Floyd...
info
Prior to Magnum, P.I. Selleck appeared in two episodes of _The Rockford
Files_. The late Noah Beery is the first of three former _Rockford_ cast
members (including Stuart Margolin and Joe Santos) to guest on _Magnum_.
1.13 013 03/19/81 Adelaide
written by Robert Hamilton
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Christine Belford, Cameron Mitchell
Adelaide Malone's expensive horse Norman is in danger.
info
This is the first of many times Thomas says to us in voice-over, "I know
what you're thinking, and you're right." Notice the red and white "Al's
Collision and Muffler Shop Tigers" cap Thomas wears for the first time and
in many ep's to follow.

Christie deBould's sister Louise, wife of the rich and jealous W. Jackson,
likes to play adventurous games and uses Magnum for them. When Magnum
wants to stop her games, she does everything to go on.
info
After the series suspended production in the late '80s, Selleck,
Manetti, and two other entrepeneurs opened a restaurant in Honolulu's
prestigeous "restaurant row" called The Black Orchid. Judith Chapman
re-appears in the ep. "The Woman on the Beach". This also is the first
of many episodes directed by Ray Austin (_Highlander: The Series_).
1.16 016 04/09/81 J. "Digger" Doyle
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Rick Kolbe
guest stars Erin Gray, Stewart Moss, Bruce Atkinson
Somebody wants to prevent the release of Robin Masters' new novel. Masters
engages Joy "Digger" Doyle to save his work. Magnum is jealous...
info
This is one of two episodes that were intended to be pilots for spin-off
shows. Erin Gray (_Buck Rogers_) was supposed to star as Joy Doyle in her
own series produced by Bellisario. The same is true of William Lucking in
the ep. "Two Birds of A Feather". Neither show was produced beyond its
pilot episode within the _Magnum_ series. Also, note the first of two
guest appearances by model/actress Jacquelyn Ray. She appears again in
"Birdman of Budapest" and she is Selleck's former wife of ten years.
1.17 017 04/16/81 Beauty Knows No Pain

2.3 020 10/22/81 The Woman on the Beach
written by Andrew Schneider
directed by Donald P. Bellisario
guest stars Judith Chapman, Jack Hogan, Kenneth Mars
Rick's new girlfriend Sara - Just a Phantom?
info
We know from ep's such as "Forty Years from Sand Island" and "Resolutions"
that Thomas Magnum loves cigars. Notice how he strolls out alone on the
beach to light a cigar at the end of this ep. This is when he sees the
ghost. Nearly the exact same thing happens to him at the end of "Mac's Back"
when the ghost of Mac actually lights his cigar for him!
2.4 021 10/29/81 From Moscow to Maui
written by Andrew Schneider
directed by Michael Vejar
guest stars Jeffrey Pomerantz, Susan Helford, Allan Rich
Magnum becomes involved with a defected Soviet pilot, a Soviet Olympic
track star, and the K.G.B.
info
The khaki colored SEAL issue swim shorts worn by Thomas here and in many
later ep's are the first of many small indicators in the series that
Thomas is a graduate of that most difficult military school. By the 1990s
it had become fashionable for popular media heroes who had Navy backgrounds
to be former SEALs. It has almost become ubiquitous in movies and
television. But in 1981 the Navy's special warfare group still was widely
unheard of in the civilian world. Thomas Magnum is perhaps the first
former SEAL ever portrayed in the popular media.
2.5ab 022 11/05/81 Memories are Forever
written by Donald P. Bellisario
directed by Ray Austin
guest stars Marta DuBois, Clyde Kusatsu, Paul Burke, Brian Fong
One night, Magnum dreams of Michelle. The next morning he sees her on a
yacht in the harbor...
info
Notable prop developments: the "Magnum" belt buckle with Navy Surface
Fleet badge appears for the first time, Thomas lapses back to an old
mistake by once again wearing his Team Ring on the left hand, and after
he fires eight rounds from his .45 it's slide does not lock back to show
the pistol is empty as it should. He puts the pistol to General Hue's
chest as if to shoot, but he has already fired the maximum capacity of
his unaltered .45 without reloading! We get a clear look at Thomas'
driver's license. His social security number is 546-10-8740 and his
address is listed as 11435 18th Ave., Honolulu, HI (46816). This is
not (and cannot) be the address at the estate which is out of town on
the Kalanianaole Highway. We can speculate, though, that since he's been
at the estate for only a year his license still shows his old address
at wherever he lived in town before he was "hired" by Robin (as shown in
"Dream A Little Dream"). In reality, this address was just a few doors
down from MCA's Magnum, P.I. production office at 520 18th Ave. His
license is shown again in "Murder 101". This ep. contains the first
reference to Higgins' memoirs. And it is the first of several times the
Parke Memorial Chapel on Breretania street in Honolulu's Queen Emma Square
is used as a filming location. Marta DuBois (_Tales From The Gold Monkey_)
begins her role as Magnum's wife which continues in "Little Girl Who" and
"Limbo". Soon Tech Oh begins his role as her husband, General Nguyen Hue.
He also appears in "Two Birds of A Feather" and "Kiss of the Sabre".
Clyde Kusatsu appears in many episodes, including "All For One" and
"This Island Isn't Big Enough". Paul Burke plays Admiral Hawkes in
"Did You See the Sunrise?" and "Blood and Honor".
2.6 023 11/12/81 Tropical Madness
written by Robert Hamilton
directed by Larry Doheny
guest stars Devon Ericson, Roy Dotrice, Bruce Johnson
Magnum only gets refusals from the beautiful Jennifer. She is fond of
Higgins instead. Magnum thinks that there must be something wrong and he
examines her background. Soon he steps into problems . . .
info
The VMO2 cap appears. The Valley of the Temples is used for the first
time. It also appears in "Did You See the Sunrise?",
"The Arrow that Is Not Aimed", "Torah, Torah, Torah", "Little Girl Who",
and "Tigers Fan".
This ep. contains the only time Thomas and Higgins come to blows (although
they come pretty close in "Paper War"!).
2.7 024 11/19/81 Wave Goodbye
written by Reuben Leder
directed by Sidney Hayers
guest stars Vic Morrow, W.K. Stratton, John Calvin
When Magnum's friend Kacy is found murdered on the beach he determinedly
tracks down her killer.
info
The bartender returns as Kika the petticab driver in many later episodes,
including "The Treasure of Kalaniopu'u".

written by Robert Hamilton
directed by Rick Kolbe
guest stars Darren McGavin, Vera Miles, Wally Landford
Buck Gibson, an old friend of Robin's and a legend for his early novels
and macho lifestyle, arrives in Hawaii. It becomes Magnum's lot to protect
the hell-raiser from himself.

See the surf ski for the first time. Gillian Dobb appears the first of
three times ("The Elmo Ziller Story" and "Ki'i's Don't Lie") prior to her
regular role as Agatha Chumley.
2.9 026 12/03/81 The Taking of Dick McWilliams
written by Diane Frolov
directed by Rick Kolbe
guest stars Irene Yah-Ling Sun, Guy Stockwell
Magnum's old friend Dick McWilliams is kidnapped. His Wife Mitsu wants to
pay the $500.000 ransom without telling her greedy father. Magnum should
deliver the money...
info
This ep. contains the first of many references to Magnum's "little voice",
that instinct he talks about frequently in voice-over.
2.10 027 12/17/81 The Sixth Position
written by Babs Greyhosky
directed by Sidney Hayers
guest stars Andrea Marcovicci, Signe Hasso, Corinne Michaels

millionaire Harold Faber. Somebody tries to suppress that, so she takes

takes over the role of Ice Pick.

written by Alan Sutterfield, Reuben Leder, Andrew Schneider, Donald P. Bellisario

Magnum to shade his wife, whom he thinks has a lover...
info

written by Andrew Schneider, Reuben Leder
directed by Michael Vejar
guest stars Nancy Grahn, Mark Withers
While investigating a case, Magnum has a car accident and awakes lying
in intensive care. He can't remember what happened - and police found his
Detoit Tigers cap next to a murdered body...
info
8/8/44 (Bellisario's birthday) is established as Thomas Magnum's birthday.
In later episodes it is a point of error. This episode is Doc Ibold's
first and Lieutenant Tanaka's first.
