  1. SHADED RELIEF MAP OF PROMETHEUS

  3. Promethe.gif is a shaded relief map of Prometheus, the inner F Ring
  4. Shepherd satellite of Saturn.  As with all maps, it is the cartographer's interpretation
  5. and not all features are necessarily certain given the limited data
  6. available - this interpretation stretches the data as far as is feasible.
  7. The original map was published in its full form with latitude-longitude
  8. grid, in:

  13. Positions in the map are controlled by a digital shape model, described
  14. in that paper.  For this map, the three dimensional convex hull of the
  15. shape model was projected into the Morphographic Conformal Projection
  16. (the conventional Stereographic Projection modified for non-spherical
  17. worlds).  The leading side (longitude 90 runs vertically down the centre)
  18. faces forwards in the orbit of Prometheus.  The trailing side (longitude
  19. 270 runs vertically down its centre) faces backwards along the orbit.
  20. Longitude 0 is at the righthand end of the leading side, and faces Saturn.
  21. As with all conformal (true shape) projections, the scale in these maps
  22. varies, increasing from the centre to the outer edge.
