  2. ABClassroom (C) 1998-2001 by Michael A. Shaffer

  4. This program requires using Windows 95/98 and a sound card. To use
  5. the built in tape recorder you also need a microphone installed
  6. and turned on.
  7.  
  8. This application runs best using a screen size of
  9. 640 X 480 to make it child size, but other setting are Okay.
  10. The color setting of 16 bit or higher is recommended.
  11. For recording, Multimedia Properties - Audio Recording Quality of
  12. 11,025 Hz, 8 bit Mono 11KB/s (Telephone quality) is recommended.

  14. To Install the program:

  16. I suggest you unzip the files in a temporary directory, then run the setup.exe file to 
  17. start the program installation.
  18.  
  19. It will install the ABClassroom program into a directory named ABC, so DO NOT name the
  20. temporary directory name ABC.  
  21.  
  22. If after the installation you do not see the ABC directory, press the F5 key to refresh 
  23. your directories.

  25. The program will be available in the start button on your task bar 
  26. or by double clicking the file abclass.exe in the abc directory.
  27.  
  28. After the ABClassroom program is installed you may delete all files in the temporary directory.
  29. Keep the abc.zip file if you want do another installation.

  32. To un-install the program and all files, go to the control panel and to add/remove programs,
  33. select (click) ABClassroom then click on the add/remove button below.

  37. This is ABClassroom version 1.1

  39. The program has been updated and now includes a feature to enable changing
  40. the display of letters in the blocks on the ABCs screen.
  41.  
  42. To do this go to the Help - Instructions screen and select a new font in the drop 
  43. down box.  Select Upper or Lower case letters and the ABCs screen will have the 
  44. new selected settings. The Help Instructions text will also display the new
  45. font selection.  Your computer installed true-type fonts will display the best
  46. on the ABCs Screen.  The selected letter displayed at he bottom of the screen is
  47. shown in Upper and Lower case, font size 36.
  48. The ABC blocks are displayed in font size 24.

  51. To Install the program:

  55. If you have a older version of ABClassroom installed on your computer 
  56. do a uninstall first before installing this version.

  58. Before uninstall If you have made your own wav files back them up first.

  62. The windows mouse control is available while running the program. I suggest
  63. you change the mouse speed setting to slow for beginners especially when 
  64. using the Chalkboard utility.

  68. The program's WAV and MID files can be substituted with those of your own to 
  69. personalize it.

  71. With the use of a wave file editior utility, a simple one comes with windows, you can
  72. create and replace my wav files with yours and put the whole program in you own voice.
  73.  
  74. example:  record a new wav file saying the letter A and save it as A.wav in a temporary
  75.           directory.
  76.           replace my A.wav file with the one you made in the ABClassroom directory.
  77.           now when the letter A is selected it will play your new file.

  81. Keep your new wav file short, cut out most all of the dead space before and after the 
  82. sound using the editor.  If you do not the program will not be as efficient.

  84. The windows sound recorder, file name Sndrec32.exe is in the windows directory.

  86. Any Midi files "filename.mid", can be copied and renamed to 
  87. music1 2 or 3 .mid in the programs directory to replace the music that plays
  88. when the program button is pushed for that music.

  92. I tried to make this application as child proof as possible.
  93. the Alt+Tab and Alt+Ctrl+Delete key combinations are disabled while running.
  94. Note: this feature will not work using Windows NT, Unknown with Windows 2000.

  96. except for letters and numbers the other keys are deactivated on most keyboards.

  99. I recommend that a parent be with the child while running this application
  100. so they do not do any harm to the computer or files if they accidentally exit
  101. the program. If a child turns the computer off and back on again, they will be
  102. out of the program.

  106. To help limit the programs abilities, setup the controls on the Menu Bar, to
  107. limit what a child might do.  
  108.  
  109. The program's Menu Bar has options to turn on and off the volume control and
  110. recorder controls.
  111.  
  112. The exit on/off can be set to hide the Goodbye (EXIT) control,
  113. so it is harder for them to accidentally exit the program.
  114.   
  115. To exit the program:
  116. select menu on the menu bar and turn the memu on.
  117. select goodbye on/off on the menu bar and turn goodbye on.
  118. a red goodbye control will now be available on the screen.

  128. The application's volume control uses Windows 95 program Sndvol32.exe
  129. this file must be in your windows directory.

  131. The recorder will record for 5 seconds then stop automatically.

  141.                                   PROBLEMS
  142.

  144. When clicking on a ABC block or pushing a letter or number key on the keyboard
  145. no sound is heard.
  146. 1.  Check the main volume and the wave volume settings in the Sndvol32.exe program.
  147. 2.  Make sure the mute box is not checked.
  148. 3.  The .wav file may not be in the ABC program's directory.
  149.

  151. The Recorder is not working.
  152. 1.  Check microphone volume and settings.
  153.     Make sure the microphone mute box is not checked.
  154. 2.  The file voice.wav may have become corrupted or is not in the program's directory.
  155. 3.  Set Your system's Multimedia Properties, Audio Recording Quality to
  156.     11,025 Hz, 8 bit Mono 11KB/s, some higher settings may corrupt the voice.wav file.

  158. (If the microphone is not working proper it may corrupt the file "voice.wav" file.)

  160. To fix the file "voice.wav.
  161.

  163. Exit the program, make a copy of any of the other
  164. abc .wav files and rename it 'voice.wav'.

  168. The recorder even when set to "play only" it will not work.
  169. 1. The file voice.wav may have became corrupted.

  171. Repair the voice.wav file as instructed above.
