  4. This program requires using Windows 95/98 and a sound card. To use
  5. the built in tape recorder you also need a microphone installed
  6. and turned on.
  7.  
  8. This application runs best using a screen size of
  9. 640 X 480 to make it child size, but other setting are Okay.
  10. The color setting of 16 bit or higher is recommended.
  11. For recording, Multimedia Properties - Audio Recording Quality of
  12. 11,025 Hz, 8 bit Mono 11KB/s (Telephone quality) is recommended.

  16. This is ABClassroom version 1.1
  17.  
  18. The program has been updated and now includes a feature to enable changing
  19. the display of letters in the blocks on the ABCs screen.
  20.  
  21. To do this go to the Help - Instructions screen and select a new font in the drop 
  22. down box.  Select Upper or Lower case letters and the ABCs screen will have the 
  23. new selected settings. The Help Instructions text will also display the new
  24. font selection.  Your computer installed true-type fonts will display the best
  25. on the ABCs Screen.  The selected letter displayed at he bottom of the screen is
  26. shown in Upper and Lower case, font size 36.
  27. The ABC blocks are displayed in font size 24.

  30. To Install the program:

  34. If you have a older version of ABClassroom installed on your computer 
  35. do a uninstall first before installing this version.

  37. Before uninstall If you have made your own wav files back them up first.
  38.  
  39. To uninstall the program and all files, go to the control panel and to add/remove programs,
  40. select (click) ABClassroom then click on the add/remove button below.

  44. The Window's mouse control is available In the Help Screen while running the program.
  45. I suggest you change the mouse speed setting to slow for beginners especially when 
  46. using the Chalkboard utility.

  50. The program's WAV and MID files can be substituted with those of your own to 
  51. personalize it.
  52.  
  53. With the use of a wave file editior utility, a simple one comes with windows, you can
  54. create and replace my wav files with yours and put the whole program in you own voice.

  56. example:  record a new wav file saying the letter A and save it as A.wav
  57.           replace my A.wav file with the one you made in the ABC directory.
  58.           now when the letter A is selected it will play your new file.

  62. Keep your new wav file short, cut out most all of the dead space before and after the 
  63. sound using the editor.  If you do not the program will not be as efficient.

  65. The windows sound recorder, file name Sndrec32.exe is in the windows directory.

  69. Any Midi files "filename.mid", can be copied and renamed to 
  70. music1 2 or 3 .mid in the programs directory to replace the music that plays
  71. when the program button is pushed for that music.

  73. The mid files supplied with the program were found on the Internet and the file authors are 
  74. unknown and the files are believed to be public domain.

  77. The program is designed to be as child proof as possible.  Examples are that when in the 
  78. ABCs screen only pressing a letter or number keys should produce a result the others
  79. will do nothing.  All of the screen's control boxes to minimize, resize, or exit
  80. are not available.  
  81. The Alt-Ctrl-Delete key combination and the Alt-Tab key presses should be disabled, and 
  82. not available for escape. Trying to drag the screen with the Title bar to see the Desktop 
  83. should not work as the Desktop is hidden by a program screen and when the cursor 
  84. touches it, the moved screen will snap back into place. Because of the various hardware 
  85. and software environments into which ABClassroom may be put, test the application 
  86. on your computer before relying on any of the child proofing features to work.

  88. Note: Not all features will not work using Windows NT, unknown using Windows 2000.

  90. The program is designed to be difficult to exit to provide some extra child proofing.  
  91. REMEMBER that learning 
  92. how to use the program's controls is one of the objectives of the program and a progressing 
  93. child will eventually learn their way out even with all of the child proofing working.

  95. I recommend that a parent be with the child while running this application
  96. so they do not do any harm to the computer or files if they accidentally exit
  97. the program. If a child turns the computer off and back on again, they will be
  98. out of the program.

  102. To help limit the programs abilities, setup the controls on the Menu Bar, to
  103. limit what a child might do.  
  104.  
  105. The program's Menu Bar has options to turn on and off the volume control and
  106. recorder controls.

  108. The exit on/off can be set to hide the Goodbye (EXIT) control,
  109. so it is harder for them to accidentally exit the program.

  111. To EXIT the program:
  112. select menu on the menu bar and turn the memu on.
  113. select goodbye on/off on the menu bar and turn goodbye on.
  114. a red goodbye control will now be available on the screen.

  125. The application's volume control uses Windows 95 program Sndvol32.exe
  126. this file must be in your windows directory.

  128. The recorder will record for 5 seconds then stop automatically.

  141. Possible  problems solutions:
  142.

  144. When clicking on a ABC block or pushing a letter or number key on the keyboard
  145. no sound is heard.
  146. 1.  Check the sound volume settings.
  147. 2.  Make sure the mute box is not checked.
  148. 3.  The .wav file may not be in the Kelsea program's directory.
  149.

  151. The Recorder is not working.
  152. 1.  Check microphone volume and settings.
  153.     Make sure the microphone mute box is not checked.
  154. 2.  The file voice.wav may have become corrupted or is not in the program's directory.
  155. 3.  Set Your system's Multimedia Properties, Audio Recording Quality to
  156.     11,025 Hz, 8 bit Mono 11KB/s, some higher settings may corrupt the voice.wav file.

  158. (If the microphone is not working proper it may corrupt the file "voice.wav" file.)

  160. To fix the file "voice.wav.
  161.  
  162. Exit the program, make a copy of any of the other
  163. abc .wav files and rename it 'voice.wav'.

  167. The recorder even when set to "play only" it will not work.
  168. 1. The file voice.wav may have become corrupted or is not in the program's directory.

  170. Repair the voice.wav file as instructed above.
