  54.      1.1 Definition of shareware

  56.      Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  57.      before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  58.      using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  59.      differ on details -- some request registration while others
  60.      require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  61.      registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  62.      using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
  63.      
  64.      Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  65.      and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  66.      exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  67.      programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  68.      of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  69.      and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  70.      distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  71.      and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  72.      specific group. For example, some authors require written
  73.      permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  74.      Shareware.
  75.      
  76.      Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  77.      should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  78.      whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  79.      fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  80.      And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  81.      has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  82.      product, you don't pay for it.

  94.      warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  95.      the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.

  97.      quential, which may result from the use of Cross Words Deluxe.

  99.      Cross Words Deluxe is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
  100.      charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  101.      friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  102.      another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  103.      provide personal computer users with quality software without
  104.      high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  105.      continue to develop new products.  If you find this program

  114.      being used at one location while it's being used at another.

  119.      their copies of Cross Words Deluxe within 30 days of first use or
  120.      their license is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made

  123.      Anyone distributing Cross Words Deluxe for any kind of remuneration 
  124.      must first contact Strategic Solutions at the address below for 
  125.      authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted to 
  126.      distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines 
  127.      for shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  128.      Cross Words Deluxe immediately (However Strategic Solutions must

  179.      2.1 What is Cross Words Deluxe?
  180.      -------------------------------
  181.      Cross Words Deluxe is a software application that allows you to
  182.      solve cross word puzzles on your computer.  The application
  183.      uses special puzzle books prepared by Strategic Solutions.  The
  184.      evaluation copy comes with a book of 25 puzzles.  The registered
  185.      version comes with 100 puzzles in your choice of Easy, Standard,
  186.      Challenging or Mixed.

  188.      As you solve puzzles, your work is automatically saved to disk so
  189.      that whenever you come back you can pick up right where you left 
  190.      off.   
  191.  
  192.      And if you want to take the puzzles with you when you leave the
  193.      computer, you can may printouts (up to four per page) of the
  194.      puzzles with or without your work in progress.

  196.      2.2 Computer advantages
  197.      -----------------------
  198.      Cross Words Deluxe has many advantages over standard puzzle 
  199.      books.  For one thing,  you can easily peek at a single word
  200.      with out 'accidentally' seeing the other words.  You can also
  201.      have the computer show you which answers are incorrect without
  202.      actually seeing the correct answers.

  204.      Unlike paper puzzle books, you can erase your answers when you
  205.      are through so that you or a friend can solve the puzzle all
  206.      over again.

  208.      One BIG advantage in a computerized puzzle book is clue assistance.
  209.      Cross Words Deluxe has two forms of clue assistance.  You fill out 
  210.      the puzzle by moving a cursor around and typing.  As you move the
  211.      cursor into a cell on the crossword, the clue for both the Across
  212.      and Down words are highlighted.  In the Show All Clues mode you
  213.      can also click the mouse on a clue to find where the word is in
  214.      the puzzle.  This clue assistance totally eliminates the need to
  215.      scan back and forth between the puzzle and the clues.

  217.      The final and perhaps best reason for computer crossword puzzles
  218.      is that they are just plain fun!  Play them on your home computer
  219.      for a relaxing evening or load in on your laptop to fill time
  220.      on that next business trip.

  222.      2.3 Hardware\Software  Requirements

  224.      Cross Words Deluxe is a windows application.  It should run on any
  225.      configuration supported by windows.  It is recommended however that
  226.      you have a 386 or better and a VGA monitor.  The application
  227.      automatically takes maximum advantage of your displays resolution.
  228.      This means that it will work on an EGA but may be difficult
  229.      to read in All Clues Mode.  It works well on a standard VGA and
  230.      great on Super VGA.

  239.      2.1 Cell and word Cursors
  240.      -------------------------
  241.      
  242.      Cross Words Deluxe maintains a cursor on one cell of the crossword. 
  243.      This is independent of  the mouse cursor maintained by windows.  In
  244.      addition to the cell cursor, a word cursor will be highlighted.  The
  245.      word cursor is either the horizontal (across) or vertical (down) word
  246.      which contains the cell cursor. 
  247.      
  248.      As you type, the character will be placed at the cell cursor and then
  249.      the cell cursor will move to the next character in the word cursor. 
  250.      When you fill out the last character in a word, the word and cell
  251.      cursers will move to the next word in the same direction.
  252.      
  253.      You may move the cell cursor by pressing any of the four cursor keys. 
  254.      If the cell cursor moves another word, the word cursor will move with
  255.      it. 
  256.      
  257.      You may move to the next word in the same direction by pressing tab or
  258.      the previous word in the same direction by pressing shift-tab.  You
  259.      may also move the word/cell cursers to any word at random by clicking
  260.      on a cell with the left mouse button or by clicking on the clue if all
  261.      clues are shown.

  263.      You can toggle the word cursor between an across word and a down word
  264.      by pressing enter or clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the
  265.      window.

  271.         Open Puzzle book   Opens a new puzzle book.

  273.         Save Work          Saves your work in progress.  Your work is also

  277.         Next page          Displays the next page (puzzle) in the current 
  278.                            puzzle book You may also go to the next page by 
  279.                            pressing <Alt-N>.

  281.         Prev page          Displays the previous page (puzzle) in the

  283.                            previous page by pressing <Alt-P>.

  285.         Index              Displays an index of puzzles in the current 
  286.                            book.  You may select a puzzle to jump to.

  295.         Erase page         Erases all work from the current puzzle.  This 
  296.                            allows someone else to work the puzzle without 
  297.                            the benefit of your progress.  You will be 
  298.                            prompted to confirm this action before the 
  299.                            puzzle is erased.

  301.         Print              Allows you to print one or more puzzles 
  302.                            (see Printing)
  303.      
  304.         Print setup        Allows you to specify the destination for 
  305.                            printing puzzles as well as the size and 
  306.                            orientation of the paper supply.

  308.         Exit               Exits from Crosswords.  Your current work in 
  309.                            progress will be saved along with the name of 
  310.                            the current book and the current puzzle number.
  311.                            The next time you start Crosswords you will 
  312.                            resume right where you left off.

  314.      SOLVE
  315.         Peek at solution   Fills in the correct answer for the word at the 
  316.                            word cursor.
  317.      
  318.         Show correct words Shows you which characters and words you have 
  319.                            correct so far.  All the correct words will 
  320.                            remain black and all incorrect words will become 
  321.                            red.
  322.      
  323.      OPTIONS
  324.         Sound              Toggles sound on and off.  A little tune is played 
  325.                            when you complete a crossword puzzle or show the 
  326.                            about box.  A check mark beside the menu option 
  327.                            indicates that sound is on.

  329.         Show all clues     Toggles between all clue and single clue mode  
  330.                            (see Showing clues )
  331.      
  332.         Uppercase Clues    Toggles between all uppercase clues and mixed
  333.                            case clues.  The advantage to uppercase clues 
  334.                            is that they are more easily read on lower
  335.                            resolution moinitors.

  338.         About Crosswords   Shows the product name and author.  Will also 
  339.                            play a little tune if sound is on

  352.      2.3 Using the mouse

  355.      Clicking on a cell    Single clicking the left mouse button on a 
  356.                            crossword cell moves the cursor to that location. 
  357.                            The appropriate clue will be displayed for the 
  358.                            new cursor locations.

  360.      Clicking on a clue    When all clues are shown, single clicking the left 
  361.                            mouse button on a clue move the cursor to that 
  362.                            location.  If will also change the cursor 
  363.                            orientation (across or down) to that of the 
  364.                            selected clue.

  366.      Orientation           You may also change the orientation (across or 
  367.                            down) by clicking the right mouse button anywhere 
  368.                            in the cross word window.

  371.      2.4 Using the keyboard
  372.      ----------------------

  374.      Enter key             Toggles the clue direction between Across and 
  375.                            Down.  A single across word or down word is 
  376.                            highlighted to indicate the current direction. 
  377.                            When a character is typed in the highlighted word,
  378.                            the cursor will move to the next character in 
  379.                            that word or, if the cursor is on the last 
  380.                            character in the highlighted word, the cursor 
  381.                            will move to the first character of the next word 
  382.                            in the same direction.

  384.      Tab key               Moves to the first character of the next word 
  385.                            in the same direction (e.g. if an across word is 
  386.                            highlighted, the cursor will move to the next 
  387.                            across word, if the cursor is on a down word, 
  388.                            the cursor will move to the next downword.
  389.                            If all clues are displayed, the clue for both the 
  390.                            across and down word will be highlighted in the 
  391.                            clue section.  If only a single across and down 
  392.                            clue is displayed, the clues will be refreshed 
  393.                            for the new word.

  395.                            Pressing Shift-Tab will move the cursor to the 
  396.                            previous word in the same direction.

  398.      Arrow keys            The four arrow keys will move the cell cursor 
  399.                            in the specified direction.  If the cell cursor 
  400.                            moves to another word, the word cursor will 
  401.                            also move.

  410.      When working a crossword, you have the option of showing all clues or
  411.      only the clues at the cursor.  You toggle between the two modes with
  412.      the menu item   Options:Show all clues

  414.      Showing all clues     Showing all the clues has the advantage of seeing 
  415.                            all clues at any point in time and allows you to 
  416.                            select a clue with the mouse for navigation in the 
  417.                            puzzle.

  419.      Showing a single clue Showing a single clue (one across and one down) 
  420.                            reserves more space for the puzzle thus allowing 
  421.                            you to work the crossword puzzle in a smaller 
  422.                            window or on a lower resolution display.

  425.      2.6 Opening a new puzzle book
  426.      -----------------------------
  427.      
  428.      Allows you to open a different installed puzzle book.  The dialog box
  429.      contains two lists. 
  430.      
  431.      Puzzle books          Allows you to choose a book in the current 
  432.                            directory.  You may double-click on a book to 
  433.                            open it or you may single-click on it and then 
  434.                            press the OK button.
  435.      
  436.      Dirs and Drives       Allows you to change the default drive or 
  437.                            directory of puzzle books.  Each time you click 
  438.                            in this list, the left list will display the 
  439.                            puzzles at that location.  The path shown at 
  440.                            the top of the screen will change to reflect 
  441.                            the new location.

  444.      2.7 The Puzzle Index

  447.      The puzzle index is a list of all puzzles in the current book.  You
  448.      may move to any puzzle by double-clicking on the puzzle or by single
  449.      clicking and then pressing the OK button.

  458.      ------------

  460.      The print dialog box allows you to select multiple options before
  461.      printing.
  462.      
  463.      Print range           Allows you to specify a range of puzzles to
  464.                            print.  A valid range is one of the following:
  465.      
  466.            Entire puzzle book    Selects the entire puzzle book for printing 
  467.      
  468.            Current puzzle        Selects only the current page for printing
  469.      
  470.            Range of puzzles      Selects a range of puzzles to be printed.  
  471.                                  If you choose this option, you must specify 
  472.                                  a range in the From and to boxes.
  473.      
  474.      Answers               Allows you to specify what answer information 
  475.                            will appear in the printed puzzles.  Valid answer 
  476.                            settings include:
  477.      
  478.            None                  Leave all the cells empty
  479.      
  480.            Work in progress      Displays the progress you have made so far 
  481.                                  (right or wrong!).  This option allows you 
  482.                                  to continue solving your puzzle on paper 
  483.                                  should you leave your computer.
  484.      
  485.            Correct answers       Show the correct answers to the puzzle in 
  486.                                  the cells.

  488.      Page layout           Allows you to change the layout of the puzzles 
  489.                            on the page.  There may also be several printer 
  490.                            specific layout options on the setup dialog box.  
  491.                            These include paper size and orientation.
  492.      
  493.            Margins               Contains four data-entry fields for Left, 
  494.                                  Right, Top, and Bottom.  This fields allow 
  495.                                  you to specify page margins in inches.  
  496.                                  This may be useful if you wish to put your 
  497.                                  puzzles in a book.

  499.            Puzzles per page      Allows you to specify 1, 2 or 4 puzzles 
  500.                                  per page.

  507.      Strategic Solutions provides user support to registered versions via 
  508.      mail, telephone, and CompuServe Information Service (R). for 3 months 
  509.      after registration.

  511.      Strategic Solutions will answer questions and fix serious bugs during 
  512.      the three month period. For problems involving a specific hardware or
  513.      software environment or feature, we may choose not to modify the 
  514.      program. In that case, if a problem is reported within three months 
  515.      after purchase, then we shall offer to refund the user's purchase 
  516.      price.

  518.      If a program bug prevents you from evaluating Cross Words Deluxe 
  519.      during the first 30 days (prior to registration), Strategic Solutions 
  520.      will attempt to assist but is not under obligation to resolve issues
