  1. Here are some more notes on Microsoft WORD's protection as it applies to 
  2. a 
  3. hard disk system.  You can make a "one-time" copy to a hard disk. When th
  4. is is 
  5. done, MWCOPY1.COM is changed so that you cannot do it again. The first 
  6. instruction in MWCOPY1.COM is JMP 104. Location 103 has a flag byte of 01
  7. , 
  8. which is changed to 03.  You can change it back and run the hard disk 
  9. installation again, however something else is changed that I did not find
  10. . All 
  11. of the files will be copied correctly except a file MWA that is marked hi
  12. dden 
  13. in the MSTOOLS directory.  This is apparently the key to decryption of th
  14. e 
  15. program file and contains a list of the Microsoft programmer names who wo
  16. rked 
  17. on the program. Since it bears a copyright notice, it cannot be reproduce
  18. d 
  19. here. You can, however make a copy of it from the first good copy to your
  20.  hard 
  21. disk.  In fact, the only files you need to run on the hard disk are :
  22.  
  23. IBMGRAPH PRD    (or one of the printer drivers)
  24. WORD     COM    
  25. MW       COD    
  26. MW       COM    
  27. MW       DAT    
  28. MW       HLP    
  29. MW       INI    
  30. MW       PGM    
  31. MWA             (this is the key for decoding the program)

  33. The MW* files must be in the subdirectory \MSTOOLS.

  35. Incidentally, WORD.COM which does the decryption and loading of the "real
  36. "
  37. program contains the following message:
