TIPS
* If your machine has upper memory available, you should
check to make sure that DBLSPACE is loaded into high
memory. To check, type:
mem /c /p <ENTER>
If you have sufficient upper memory, you can load
DOUBLESPACE high and save 43K of conventional
memory by inserting the following line in the
DEVICEHIGH section of your CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE
To have DoubleSpace load into high memory, you can add
this DEVICEHIGH line using EDIT. Make it the first
DEVICEHIGH line in the CONFIG.SYS file. Below is a
sample DOS 6 CONFIG.SYS file set up to load DoubleSpace
into high memory.
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE
DEVICEHIGH=C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.SYS
FILES=30
BUFFERS=20
STACKS=9,256
NUMLOCK=OFF
* If you are using DoubleSpace, don't expect to gain space
by compressing files with other compression programs such
as PKZIP or LHA.
* If you want to compress files on a diskette, the shareware
program PKZIP does a much better job than DoubleSpace.
Another advantage is that you don't need DOS 6 to use
PKZIP or PKUNZIP.
* You may be able to recover a deleted DoubleSpace drive
(a diskette drive or a hard drive) with the DOS
UNDELETE command since a DoubleSpaced drive is
really not a drive at all; in fact, it is a Compressed Volume
File (CVF). If you UNDELETE a deleted compressed
drive, you will have to MOUNT the drive before you can gain
access.
* One of my computers was running DoubleSpace and
developed cross-linked files. Norton Disk Doctor in
Norton Utilities fixed the problem. Norton Utilities is
available from Symantec Corporation, 10201 Torre
Avenue, Cupertino, CA 95014-2132. Phone 1-800-441-
7234.
