  22. CHANGES IN RELEASE 3.0 OF PRINTCACHE
  23. ====================================
  24. Here are the main features that have been added since version 2.4 of
  25. PrintCache was released:
  26.   o   A new enhanced-mode parallel interrupt driver for greatly
  27.       improved performance when running Windows in enhanced mode
  28.       (this was added in PrintCache 2.5)
  29.   o   A Windows application (PCWIN) that provides the same features
  30.       as the DOS popup (this was added in PrintCache 2.5)
  31.   o   Printer status is reflected in the PrintCache icon when the
  32.       PCWIN program has been minimized and the PrintCache icon is on
  33.       the desktop
  34.   o   Print direct to LPT1 and other parallel ports in Windows
  35.       (rather than LPT1.OS2)
  36.   o   A brand-new install program that sets PrintCache up on your
  37.       hard disk
  38.   o   Command line options can now be set with Install
  39.   o   Printer type shown on DOS pop-up menu
  40.   o   Improved interaction with Fonts-on-the-Fly and Printer Control
  41.       Panel when running under Windows
  42.   o   New documentation

  45. CHANGES IN THIS INLINE RELEASE OF PRINTCACHE 3.0
  46. ================================================
  47. This release of PrintCache 3.0, dated July 14, 1992, contains some
  48. new features not found in the initial release of PrintCache 3.0.
  49. Here is some information on these new features.
  50.  
  51. Using XMS Memory for a Print Buffer
  52. -----------------------------------
  53. There is no longer any restriction on using XMS memory when you 
  54. are using an XMS memory manager such as Microsoft's HIMEM.SYS,
  55. Qualitas' 386Max, or Quarterdeck's QEMM.
  56.  
  57. Drag-and-Drop Printing in Windows 3.1
  58. -------------------------------------
  59. PCWIN (the PrintCache control panel for Windows) now supports the
  60. "drag-and-drop" features of Windows 3.1 for printing.  You may
  61. now print a file by dragging it from the Windows File Manager and
  62. dropping it onto the PrintCache icon.  (Make sure you drop it onto
  63. the PrintCache icon on your desktop, not the PrintCache icon found
  64. in one of your Program Manager program groups.)  This feature is
  65. also supported for Norton Desktop for Windows, and any other Windows
  66. File Manager replacement which supports the Windows 3.1 drag-and-drop
  67. conventions.
  68.  
  69. There is one limitation that you should be aware of:  if you have two 
  70. printers connected to your PC, and are running two copies of PrintCache, 
  71. Windows will always print the file to the current default printer, 
  72. regardless of which icon you drop the file onto.  For example, assume 
  73. that you have two PCWIN icons showing, one for LPT1 and one for LPT2.  
  74. If the default printer is the one on LPT1, the file will print to the
  75. printer on LPT1 even if you dropped the file onto the PCWIN icon 
  76. showing LPT2.
  77.  
  78. Keeping the PCWIN Icon or Window Visible in Windows
  79. ---------------------------------------------------
  80. You can now set PCWIN so that it will always be visible, even 
  81. if you have another Windows application maximized.
  82.  
  83. To do this, use PCWIN's Control menu.  To display the Control menu, 
  84. click on the upper left hand corner of the PCWIN window.  If PCWIN 
  85. is running, and has been reduced to an icon, you can display the 
  86. Control menu by clicking once on the icon.  Choose "Always On Top" 
  87. to set PCWIN so that it is always visible.  
  88.  
  89. When the "Always on Top" option is enabled, you will see a check 
  90. mark next to the "Always On Top" command on the Control menu.  To 
  91. turn off this feature, choose "Always On Top" again.
  92.  
  93.  
  94. PRINTCACHE, QUALITAS 386MAX AND WINDOWS 3.X
  95. ===========================================
  96. When using the 386MAX memory manager and running under Windows 3.x, 
  97. you may notice loss of data from the PrintCache buffer when switching 
  98. between Windows 3.x and DOS applications.  This is because 386MAX 
  99. unnecessarily creates a new running copy (instance) of PrintCache 
  100. in each DOS window.  To fix this problem, locate the file 386LOAD.CFG 
  101. (normally found in your 386MAX directory) and use a text editor to 
  102. delete the line:
  103.  
  104.   I  PCACHE.COM    00/00/00
  105.  
  106. You will need to reboot your system for this change to take effect.
  107.  
  108.  
  109. PRINTCACHE AND QUARTERDECK'S QEMM 6.0
  110. =====================================
  111. Some users have experienced problems when using PrintCache's interrupt 
  112. drivers in conjunction with QEMM 6.0's "Stealth" feature.  This problem 
  113. can be avoided by using the XSTI= option when loading QEMM.  This option 
  114. tells Stealth to exclude a specified interrupt.  A listing showing ports, 
  115. their default interrupts, and the XSTI= value to use is given below:
  116.

  125. For example, if you are running PrintCache with the Interrupt 7 driver, 
  126. and are experiencing problems with QEMM 6.0's Stealth feature, you should 
  127. load QEMM 6.0 with the "XSTI=0F" option as shown in the example below:
  128.  
  129.      DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS [...] ST:M XSTI=0F
  130.  
  131. The "ST:M" option turns on the Stealth feature of QEMM.  The "[...]" 
  132. indicates any other QEMM options which you normally use; these will 
  133. vary depending on your setup.  The path shown above may be different 
  134. than that required for your system.
  135.  
  136.  
  137. PRINTCACHE AND DOS 5.0 EDIT
  138. ===========================
  139. There is a problem using PrintCache with DOS 5.0's EDIT program. If you
  140. pop up the PrintCache menu while running EDIT, the computer may hang,
  141. requiring you to reboot.  Therefore, we recommend that you do not use
  142. the pop-up menu while running EDIT.
  143.  
  144.  
  145. WORDPERFECT FOR DOS USERS WITH EGA OR VGA SCREENS
  146. =================================================
  147. WordPerfect can configure EGA and VGA screens into 512 character mode,
  148. rather than the normal 256 characters.  When PrintCache pops up, the
  149. menu is displayed in the wrong character set, and appears to be screen
  150. corruption.  The PrintCache pop-up menu commands still operate, and the
  151. menu will pop down using X or Esc, properly restoring the WordPerfect
  152. screen.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. KEYBOARD PROBLEMS
  156. =================
  157. Some users with enhanced keyboards may encounter circumstances where
  158. their keyboard switches into CapsLock or NumLock mode inappropriately
  159. when using PrintCache.  If this happens, use the /K command line option
  160. to load PrintCache, for example:
  161.  
  162.   C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /K
  163.  
  164. This should eliminate the problem.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. PRINTCACHE, WINDOWS 3.X, AND THE DESKJET 
  168. ========================================
  169. When printing with Hewlett-Packard's "HP DeskJet Series v2.1" printer 
  170. driver under Windows, PrintCache may fail to capture the printer data. 
  171. That is, you can print, but data does not show up in the PrintCache 
  172. buffer.  To fix this, follow the steps below (the example below assumes 
  173. you are printing to LPT1; substitute the appropriate port for your setup).
  174.  
  175. If you are using Windows 3.0
  176. ----------------------------
  177. 1.  Open the Windows Control Panel, double-click on the Printers icon,
  178.     and highlight the DeskJet Series v2.1 entry in the Installed Printers
  179.     list.
  180. 2.  Click on the Configure button.
  181. 3.  Scroll the Ports list at left until you see LPT1.OS2.
  182.     Highlight the port that matches your PrintCache buffer port.
  183. 4.  Click the Setup button and check all the parameters (i.e. printer
  184.     resolution, memory, cartridge, etc.) to make sure they are correct.
  185. 5.  Click OK until you exit Windows Control Panel
  186.  
  187. If you are using Windows 3.1
  188. ----------------------------
  189. 1.  Open the Windows Control Panel, double-click on the Printers icon,
  190.     and highlight the DeskJet Series v2.1 entry in the Installed Printers
  191.     list.
  192. 2.  Click on the Connect button.
  193. 3.  Click on the Fast Printing Direct to Port checkbox to remove the "X".
  194.  
  195. Once you have made these changes PrintCache should be able to buffer
  196. the print data for your DeskJet.  Note that PrintCache only has a 
  197. problem with the HP-supplied DeskJet Series v2.1 driver.  PrintCache 
  198. works fine with earlier versions of the DeskJet Series driver, and 
  199. with the DeskJet drivers supplied by Microsoft with Windows 3.1.
  200.  
  201.  
  202. PRINTCACHE AND PRINTER CONTROL PANEL
  203. ====================================
  204. If you've been using Printer Control Panel ver. 2.2 with Windows, we
  205. recommend that you delete the file GDX.DLL that can be found in your
  206. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  This file was placed there by Printer
  207. Control Panel, and is replaced by a new version of GDX.DLL which
  208. PrintCache places in the \WINDOWS directory.  Having both versions of
  209. GDX.DLL in place has caused problems when running Norton Desktop for
  210. Windows.
  211.  
  212.  
  213. USING PRINTCACHE WITH NETWORKS
  214. ==============================
  215.  
  216. Load Order
  217. ----------
  218. If you are using PrintCache on a network workstation, and must load
  219. PrintCache before the network software, we recommend that you set
  220. PrintCache's pop-up buffer option to use RAM instead of disk.  To set
  221. this option, run Install from the PrintCache directory, choose Basic
  222. Settings, highlight the Pop-up Buffer menu at lower left, press Enter,
  223. and choose the "Buffer Screen Contents to RAM" option.  Alternatively,
  224. you can load PrintCache using the /N command line option, for example:
  225.  
  226.   C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /N
  227.  
  228. Novell's Link Support Layer (LSL.COM)
  229. -------------------------------------
  230. Novell's LSL.COM will not load successfully after PrintCache has loaded.
  231. If possible, we recommend that PrintCache be loaded after LSL.COM.
  232.  
  233. Using PrintCache and Lacerte Software on a Novell Network
  234. ---------------------------------------------------------
  235. If you are using PrintCache with Lacerte on a Novell network, it is
  236. important that you do the following:
  237.   o   Load PrintCache BEFORE the network is loaded
  238.   o   Use Install to set the Popup Buffer to RAM, as described
  239.       above, or load PrintCache with a /N load parameter:
  240.  
  241.           C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /N
  242.  
  243.  
  244. OTHER LASERTOOLS PRODUCTS
  245. =========================
  246.  
  247. Fonts-on-the-Fly for WordPerfect
  248. --------------------------------

  276. Printer Control Panel
  277. ---------------------
  278. Printer Control Panel is a vital utility program for PC users who are
  279. printing to a PostScript printer.  Many PC applications do not provide
  280. drivers for the PostScript language, and users must manually switch
  281. their printer into HP mode in order to print from these programs.
  282. Printer Control Panel monitors the printer port and determines what type
  283. of output is being sent by the program, and then automatically switches
  284. the printer into the correct mode.
  285.  
  286. Printer Control Panel retails for $149, and is licensed on a per-printer
  287. basis.  It works in stand-alone and network environments.
  288.
