  2. AFE - Archive Front End, a Cheap(!) native OS/2 2.1x VX-REXX program
  3. which provides a visual front end for the handling of ZIP, LZH, ZOO
  4. and ARJ files.

  10. Installation
  11.  
  12.    Upgraders from AFE 2.0 or 2.01 should proceed as with a new
  13.    installation since AFE.CFG's layout has changed and VROBJ.DLL must
  14.    be upgraded to the 1/26/94 version.  It should not be necessary to pre-
  15.    erase the old files.  If you are upgrading from  AFE 2.2 you may simply
  16.    overwrite your existing AFE.EXE and VROBJ.DLL with those included in this
  17.    package.

  19.       1. UnZIP AFE23.ZIP.  If you're reading this, you've probably
  20.          already done that.
  21.  
  22.       2. Type AFE-INST from the directory where all the unzipped files are
  23.          located.  This program will guide you through setting the variables
  24.          for your system, where to install AFE, where to install the .DLL
  25.          file and create a desktop object for AFE that has the proper
  26.          settings and associations.

  28.    * Note: OS/2 puts a "." as the first path in your LIBPATH statement  *
  29.    * in your CONFIG.SYS file by default.  This tells OS/2 to search the *
  30.    * current path for the appropriate .DLL when you try to execute a    *
  31.    * program.  The AFE-INST program requires this to work unless you    *
  32.    * are running it directly from a directory in your LIBPATH.          *

  34.          The entry fields in the installation program support all the normal
  35.          editing functions supported in the WPS such as destructive
  36.          backspace, overwriting highlighted text, etc.  When you are
  37.          satisfied with your entry, press the "Okay" button (or Enter),
  38.          and you will be stepped to the next variable defining dialog.

  40.          If the meanings of the directory variables are not clear to you
  41.          with the explanations in the install program, read the next section
  42.          on running AFE to understand how the the directories are used. Note
  43.          that you will get better performance from AFE if you do not make
  44.          the root directory of any drive your "ARC DIRECTORY" or "PICK
  45.          DIRECTORY".

  47.       3. If everything goes properly, AFE should start when you exit the
  48.          installation program.

  50.       4. (Optional) Set the font in "E" to SYSTEM VIO.  This makes
  51.          viewing plain text files easier because of its even spacing.

  53.    I have the program object along the bottom of my Desktop since I use it
  54.    everyday.  I use a Shareware File/directory manager that supports drag
  55.    'n drop from its file list which makes it super easy to start AFE by
  56.    highlighting the file name and dragging it to my program icon.

  60. AFE is a copyrighted program.  It is not public domain or free
  61. software.  A limited license is granted for the purpose of determining
  62. suitability of the program.  Registration is required for any use
  63. beyond a 15 day evaluation period.  Registered user have the right to
  64. use this program for their personal use on one or more computers
  65. provided that only 1 copy is in use at the same time.

  67. After a couple of weeks of using AFE, you ought to know if it's the
  68. archive tool for you.  Fill out and print REG-FORM.AFE and make out a
  69. check.
