  1. WinZip for Windows/NT     BETA TEST VERSION

  5. Welcome to the pre-release version of WinZip for Windows/NT!  This
  6. version is functionally equivalent to the 16 bit version, but
  7. because it is a native Win32 application it does not run into the
  8. incompatibilities in Windows/NT's Windows emulation, multi-tasks
  9. better, and is faster than the 16 bit version (in particular unzip
  10. operations are noticeably faster).

  12. Requirements:

  14. This version of WinZip requires Windows/NT.  You can also run this
  15. version if you have Win32s installed, however, Win32s is not
  16. distributed as part of the pre-release package because the files
  17. take over a megabyte of disk space.  Note that Win32s is _not_
  18. part of Windows for Workgroups.  Win32s is a separate operating
  19. system extension that allows some Win32 applications to run under
  20. Windows 3.1.

  22. Notes:

  24. - Since the Win16 and the Win32 versions look almost identical I
  25.   temporarily put an asterisk in the title bar of the Win32
  26.   version to make it easier to determine which version is running.

  28. - This version of WinZip always uses the short 8.3 format of any
  29.   long filename you pass to it.  Long filename support will be
  30.   implemented in a future release.

  32. Win32s Known Problems:
  33.  
  34. - You may encounter unexpected results if you are running other
  35.   Win32s applications that use a lot of memory (see the recent
  36.   threads in the MSWIN32 conference here on CompuServe for details
  37.   on this problem).

  39. - Due to bugs in Win32s you may not be able to work with filenames
  40.   and directory names containing characters above ascii 127.
  41.  
  42. - Drag and drop from the 32-bit WinZip under Win32s to a Norton
  43.   Desktop "desktop item icon" does not work.  Drag and drop to
  44.   other applications (e.g. a running copy of Notepad) works fine.

  46. - Norton Utilities 8.0 installs symevnt.386 in your system.ini
  47.   which apparently can cause problems for WinZip and other Win32s
  48.   applications (include the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler).
  49.  
  50. - Old versions of Win32s (prior to version 1.1 dated 7/25/93) can
  51.   cause WinZip (and other Win32s application) to fail.

  53. Windows/NT Known Problems:
  54.  
  55. - There are some anomalies in how the the Add dialog box handles
  56.   long filenames and files with blanks.  Note that the Add dialog
  57.   box is based on the standard Windows "multi-select" open dialog
  58.   box, so this behavior is common to _all_ applications that use
  59.   this common dialog box.  The dialog box shows the short form of
  60.   long NTFS filenames with blanks, but does not list 8.3 files
  61.   with blanks (e.g. the filename "nico mak computing.txt" is
  62.   listed as "nicoma~1.txt" while the ame "nico mak.txt" is not
  63.   shown at all).  HPFS filenames with blanks are never shown.

  65. - Some of the 16-bit Windows virus scanners listed in the Program
  66.   Location dialog box do not work or are not available under
  67.   Windows/NT.
  68.
