  1. The following editorial is reprinted from JUST CAUSE #17, the quarterly
  2. newsletter of Citizens Against UFO Secrecy.

  4.         At a time when public awareness of the UFO phenomenon is at a
  5.         very high level, we note a disturbing situation. Serious
  6.         controversy has developed in connection with the Gulf Breeze,
  7.         Florida UFO photo case, a controversy which threatens the
  8.         integrity of our subject (see recent issues of the MUFON UFO
  9.         Journal and CUFOS Bulletin for details.)

  11.         One may debate the merits or demerits of a sighting, this is
  12.         what investigation and discussion of casework is all about. What
  13.         has clearly developed here however is an exercise in character
  14.         assassination, with MUFON and Gulf Breeze supporters on one side
  15.         and CUFOS and Gulf Breeze critics on the other side.
  16.         Unfortunately the verbal muggings going on and their aftermath
  17.         will hurt us all. UFO study will continue to be perceived as a
  18.         fragmented, disorganized political boxing ring where those of
  19.         differing opinions slug it out to see who can blacken the
  20.         other's eyes.

  22.         Our position is that the burden of proof is on the Gulf Breeze
  23.         supporters to prove their case, something we feel has not been
  24.         done yet at this writing (8/23). It is entirely reasonable and
  25.         necessary to raise critical questions and put a case through a
  26.         ringer of tough scrutiny before it deserves the label "UFO." The
  27.         questions posed by the Center for UFO Studies are serious,
  28.         legitimate, and have not been adequately answered by the MUFON
  29.         side of the fence. We are most dismayed at the removal of Robert
  30.         Boyd, MUFON's State Director for Alabama and a former
  31.         investigator and current critic of Gulf Breeze, from his
  32.         directorship by MUFON's International Director, Walt Andrus. The
  33.         reason given, alleged violations of MUFON's Field Manual, will
  34.         undoubtedly be interpreted instead as retaliation for being
  35.         vocally against what MUFON has now endorsed as authentic (see
  36.         MUFON UFO Journal, August 1988). At the same time we've noted
  37.         statements earlier in the year by Gulf Breeze proponents which
  38.         were outrageously biased, yet no punishment seems to have been
  39.         meted out at all.

  41.         The consequences of the current debate are clear. If an
  42.         organization makes a policy decision to support a bizarre
  43.         incident, or series of incidents, as authentic and then proceeds
  44.         to attack all criticism, every question MUST be answered, not
  45.         ignored; otherwise, the organization's support must be
  46.         considered "lightweight" and without firm scientific foundation.
  47.         The organization then becomes vulnerable to credibility
  48.         questions and its hard-earned influence fades quickly into
  49.         obscurity.

  51.         We would like to see total and amiable cooperation between all
  52.         organizations researching UFOs. It is obvious though that with
  53.         four decades of experience behind us this will be nearly
  54.         impossible. We can only hope that UFOs will be explained
  55.         ultimately, despite the petty bickerings of those who embrace
  56.         the subject the most.

  58.         We support a recent statement by CUFOS, The CUFOS Position on
  59.         the Gulf Breeze Case [CUFOS.GB] and look for a quick
  60.         resolution to this very serious problem.
