SYNOPSIS
HCPLAY will play ordinary VGA FLI animations, SuperVGA FLI
animations, and new 32,768 colour (HiColor) animations
produced from a series of Targa images using our HCMAKE
program.

The entire HCPLAY package, including the HCPLAY, HCMAKE and
HCSHOW programs, documentation and sample files are Copyright
1990,1992 Synergrafix Consulting. All rights reserved. The
unregistered shareware versions of the programs may be freely
distributed to others by any means, as long the following
(three) conditions are met:
1) HCPLAY is distributed in a "package" containing the
following files:
HCPLAY.EXE
HCPLAY.DOC
HCPLAY.ME
2) HCPLAY is not distributed as part of any other
product, except with specific written permission from
the authors.
3) NO fee of any kind is charged for the HCPLAY
package or for the service of providing the package,
except Computer Bulletin Board Systems, which may
distribute the HCPLAY package even though they may
charge a membership or service fee.
You can use the "shareware" version of HCPLAY for personal,
non-commercial use for as long as you want, although your
support will directly contribute to its further development
and improvement. Commercial users, and those wishing to
produce longer animations may purchase an unrestricted
(see below) kit containing registered versions of HCPLAY,

and you will receive a 5 1/4" disk containing the latest
unlimited versions of HCPLAY and HCMAKE, along with the HCSHOW
bonus program.
Look for the shareware version of HCMAKE wherever you found
HCPLAY. HCMAKE will produce 32,768 colour (HiColor)
animations for HCPLAY from a series of 15,16 or 24 bit Targa
images.
COMPULSORY ADVERTISING AND GENERAL BEGGING
The following programs are also available from Synergrafix
Consulting:
GIFEXE Make you GIF's self-displaying. Make
automatic slideshows with fades, etc.
VGA/SVGA.
GIFWARP! Warp, bend stretch your GIFs for
interesting effects.
GIFCLIP Clip/crop your GIFs, add text or your
own GIF logo or signature.
GIFSIZE Resize all or part of your GIFs. Shrink
an entire screen to the size of an icon.
(These programs are available in licensed SuperVGA versions
for $8.00 U.S. each, or get all four for $23.00 U.S. or more.
These registered versions may not be distributed to others, or
distributed with, or as part of any other product. These
programs support modes like 640x480, 800x600 with 256 colours
on 512K and 1024K SuperVGA cards from ATI, Ahead, Cirrus,
Chips and Technologies, Everex, OAK, Paradise, Trident, Tseng,
Video7, Compaq, NCR, Genoa and VESA.
REQUIREMENTS
HCPLAY currently requires the following:
- PC(tm)/XT(tm)/AT(tm)/386(tm) computer (386/486
strongly recommended.)
- About 300K of free RAM
- DOS 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0 (others untested)
- 1 Mb or more of XMS memory, or RAM disk or disk
cache is recommended.
- A Tseng 4000 based SuperVGA card with 1Mb of
video memory, and a HiColor (32,000 colour)
compatible DAC chip, or an ATI XL with HiColor
capability, or a VESA compliant HiColor capable
board, such as an S3 based board (with a
bug-free bios!)
INSTALLATION
Simply copy the HCPLAY program (and this helpful document of
course!) to any directory that you want - perhaps somewhere in
the DOS path.
USAGE
Syntax for HCPLAY is as follows:
HCPLAY [?] infilename[.FLI] /mode=0,1,2.. /speed=n
/n=m /stay /key=c /force /time /debug
The options are as follows:
/mode is used to force a particular video mode. Generally,
the option SHOULD NOT BE used for HiColor animations, unless
it seems that HCPLAY is playing your animation in an incorrect
mode. For SuperVGA type FLIs, the /mode switch may be used to
specify the size of the screen.
/mode=code /mode=0 Ordinary 320x200 mode
/mode=1 Low resolution SVGA
640x400 or 640x350
depending on your card.
/mode=2 Medium resolution 640x480
/mode=3 High resolution 800x600
/mode=4 Higher resolution 1024x768
is supported on some
1024K cards.)
/mode=5 Highest resolution 1280x1024
supposedly available on
a VESA card out there
somewhere...
/speed=n This switch is used to specify the speed at
which the animation is to be played. This
option overrides the speed value contained in
the animation file.
/n=m Play the animation "m" times. The default is
to play the animation until a key is pressed
(see /key=c below).
/stay Do not clear the screen after the animation has
played. The graphics from the current frame
will be left on the screen, and the screen will
be left in HiColor mode.
/key=c Play the animation until the "c" key is
pressed. "c" may be a character such as /key=a
to specify the "a" key or it may be the ascii
code of a character such as /key=27 to specify
the ESC key.
/force Do not check video hardware before attempting
to play the animation. If you have a new
HiColor compatible video card, but HCPLAY says
"Can't set HiColor mode!" then try /force to
avoid the hardware checking that may not detect
your type of HiColor compatible chip.
/time Print the time required to play the animation.
(This option can be used as a benchmark when
combined with the /n=m switch. Check the speed
of new HiColor hardware.)
/debug This switch will print information about the
XMS memory, VGA and DAC type, and the current
animation. This information may be helpful if
HCPLAY won't work for you. If you write me
about a problem, try to include a screen print
of this debug information. Press a key to
continue after displaying this information.
For example, try:
C> HCPLAY ? to see the help/brag screen
C> HCPLAY anim to play the file "anim.fli"
C> HCPLAY demo /n=10 /force /speed=0 /stay
to play the file "demo.fli"
10 times, without checking
the video hardware, playing as
fast as possible (/speed=0), and
remaining on the screen when a
key is pressed.
C> HCPLAY demo.fli /key=27
to play the file "demo.fli"
until the ESC key is pressed.
During playback, the keys '1' through '9' may be used to
change the speed of the animation. '1' is fastest, '9' is
slowest.
RESTRICTIONS AND CAVEATS
This is a beta version of the software!
HCPLAY is currently limited to SuperVGA and HiColor animation
at 640x480 resolution.
Support for large 256 color SuperVGA FLI's is currently
incomplete.
The shareware versions of HCPLAY and HCMAKE are currently
limited to animations of 25 or fewer frames.
THE FUTURE
We intend to make the following improvements to HCPLAY. We
need your support to continue development!
- Improved speed and support for ordinary SuperVGA FLI's.
- Extract frames from animations as GIF(tm) and Targa(tm)
images.
- Play animations with sound support. (?)
- More commands available during animation playing.
