  31. We suggest printing this document so you can read the 
  32. instructions while performing the steps on your 
  33. computer screen. Note that for the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si 
  34. MX PostScript printer, making these driver changes 
  35. does not affect the printer's resolution (300 dpi or 
  36. 600 dpi) setting.  The printer's resolution must be set 
  37. at the printer's front panel.  For example, if your 
  38. printer's resolution setting is 600 dpi and your 
  39. software's resolution setting is 300 dpi, your 
  40. document will print at 600 dpi.  The printer's 
  41. resolution setting will always  override your 
  42. software's resolution setting.
  43. ----------------INSTALLATION FOR THE HP LASERJET 
  44. 4Si/4Si MX 600 DPI Printer Driver ---------------------

  47. Following are instructions for installing the driver in 
  48. Windows 3.1. It is installed through the Control Panel.  
  49. This driver is an updated version of the PostScript 
  50. driver that ships with Windows 3.1, which adds support 
  51. for the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  PostScript printer.
  52. 1.  Insert the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  PostScript 
  53. Printer Drivers for Microsoft Windows disk into a 
  54. flexible disk drive.
  55. 2.  Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main 
  56. window in the Program Manager window.
  57. 3.  Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control 
  58. Panel window.
  59. 4.  Click the "Add" button.  The dialog box expands to 
  60. display a list of printers available in Windows 3.1.  
  61. If you have never installed a printer, this list box 
  62. will fold out automatically for you.
  63. 5.  Click "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer" at the 
  64. top of the "List of Printers".
  65. 6.  Click the "Install" button.
  66. 7.  If your driver disk is in flexible disk drive A:, 
  67. type the following, then click the "OK" button:
  68.             a:\
  69. If your driver disk is in a different flexible disk 
  70. drive, substitute the appropriate drive letter.
  71. 8.  Click the "HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  PS 600 dpi" 
  72. selection.  Click the "OK" button.
  73. 9.  Click the "Connect" button.
  74. 10. Click the desired port in the "Ports" list box.
  75. 11. Change the "Transmission Retry" to "600" to ensure 
  76. that timeouts do not occur.
  77. 12. Click the "OK" button.
  78. 13. Click the "Setup" button.
  79. 14. Click the "Options" button.
  80. 15. Click the "Advanced" button.
  81. 16. Clear the "Compress Bitmaps" check box by clicking 
  82. it.  (Clearing this check box will cause your print 
  83. files not to be compressed.  This should significantly 
  84. decrease the time needed to print files with bitmapped 
  85. graphics.)
  86. 17. Click the "OK" button to exit Advanced Options.
  87. 18. Click the "OK" button to exit Options.
  88. 19. Make any other desired changes to the driver 
  89. options.
  90. 20. Click the "OK" button to exit the "HP LaserJet..." 
  91. dialog box.
  92. 21. Click the "Set as Default Printer" button if you 
  93. wish to make this printer the default printer.
  94. 22. Click the "Close" button.
  95. 23. Double-click the upper left-hand corner of the 
  96. Control Panel window to close it.
  97. 24. Remove the driver disk from your flexible disk 
  98. drive.

  100. ----------------INSTALLATION FOR THE HP LASERJET 
  101. 4Si/4Si MX 300 DPI Printer Driver ---------------------

  103. Following are instructions for installing the driver in 
  104. Windows 3.1. It is installed through the Control Panel.  
  105. This driver is an updated version of the PostScript 
  106. driver that ships with Windows 3.1, which adds support 
  107. for the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  PostScript printer.
  108. 1.  Insert the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  PostScript 
  109. Printer Drivers for Microsoft Windows 
  110. disk into a flexible disk drive.
  111. 2.  Double-click the "Control Panel" icon in the Main 
  112. window in the Program Manager window.
  113. 3.  Double-click the "Printers" icon in the Control 
  114. Panel window.
  115. 4.  Click the "Add" button.  The dialog box expands to 
  116. display a list of printers available in Windows 3.1.

  158. This is Version 3.53 of Microsoft's PostScript Printer 
  159. Driver for MS Windows 3.1.  It is an updated version of 
  160. the PostScript driver that ships with Windows 3.1, 
  161. which adds support for the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX 
  162. PostScript printer.  It offers the following selection 
  163. of HP LaserJet PostScript printer models, and support 
  164. for the following printer features unique to HP 
  165. LaserJet printers:

  180. The driver's on-line Help facility describes driver 
  181. options that are common to all printers.  This section 
  182. describes driver options that are unique to HP LaserJet 
  183. printers, or which warrant additional explanation.
  184. HP LASERJET 4Si/4Si MX  PAPER SOURCES:  The driver's 
  185. Paper Source selections for the HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX  
  186. PostScript printer correspond to the printer's paper 
  187. sources as follows:

  199. DUPLEX PRINTING - NONE, LONG EDGE OR SHORT EDGE:  This 
  200. option allows you to enable duplex (two-sided) printing 
  201. on HP LaserJet 4Si and 4Si MX printers. Selecting None 
  202. causes the document to be printed one-sided.  Selecting 
  203. Long Edge causes the document to be printed two-sided, 
  204. ready to be bound along the length (longer dimension) 
  205. of the pages.  Selecting Short Edge causes the document 
  206. to be printed two-sided, ready to be bound along the 
  207. width (shorter dimension) of the pages.
