  11. ABOUT THE PASSENGER FONT:  
  12.         This font is a virtual railroad for your printer.  YOU WILL NEED A  
  13. HIGH RESOLUTION PRINTER TO TRULY APPRECIATE THIS FONT.  The screen image  
  14. isn't the best, but load up the PostScript font and PRINT OUT A COPY OF  
  15. "PSNGR_MAP.WRI" to see all the living detail in full heart stopping color  
  16. (well, I get carried away, but you get the idea).  Now you can add the finest 
  17.  
  18. passenger trains to your documents.  
  19.   
  20.         There are three different locomotives and fourteen passenger cars.   
  21. Each locomotive and car is assigned to a different key.  For each character,  
  22. lower case corresponds to facing leftward and upper case corresponds to  
  23. facing rightward.  In some cases, this is a small distinction, but, it is  
  24. included for completeness.  After loading the font, you should print out a  
  25. copy of "PSNGR_MAP.WRI" for a sample of the font and to see which characters  
  26. map to which keys.  
  27.         My logic for assigning the characters was to put the locomotives in  
  28. the upper left corner of the keyboard.  Along the middle row, I put the  
  29. passenger cars from left to right in roughly the order you might find them in 
  30.  
  31. a train.  Note that no train would have all of the cars and most trains would 
  32.  
  33. have had several cars of certain classes.  But make what you like.  In the  
  34. bottom left, I put the observation cars (end cars), you have four to choose  
  35. from.  There is also a "Whoosh!" or speed line effect that is demonstrated in 
  36.  
  37. the legend file.  
  38.         Many of the cars were done from memory and are not exact replicas of  
  39. real passenger cars.  They are close though.  I showed the font to a friend  
  40. and about all he said was, "All full domes had three axle trucks."  I will  
  41. fix that as soon as I get around to drawing up some three axle trucks  
  42. (needless to say, this was a complement coming from him).  
  43.         I took inspiration from equipment that I am familiar with and from  
  44. some of my favorite railroads.  On the first page of the MAP file, the train  
  45. at the top is roughly the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha and the train at the bottom 
  46.  
  47. is roughly the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Twin Zephyr.

  50. IN THE EVENT YOU ARE UNABLE TO OPEN THE MAP FILE, THIS FONT USES THE  
  51. FOLLOWING KEYS FOR VARIOUS LOCOMOTIVE, CARS AND EFFECTS:  
  52. q, Q, w, W, e, E, a, A, s, S, d, D, f, F, g, G, h, j, J, k, K, l, L, z, Z, x,

  59. IMPORTANT STUFF:  
  60.   
  61. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN and will appear as  
  62. empty boxes.  They should print okay though.  
  63.   
  64. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE SAME TIME  
  65.   
  66. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST SCRIPT FONT IS  
  67. PREFERED.

  70. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:  
  71.         Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the IBM  
  72. systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as "consultants".   
  73. This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts are pretty neat and they 
  74.  
  75. are worth the trek.  From my end, I am more than willing to work with you to  
  76. get the fonts to work on your machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if  
  77. they don't work on the first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having  
  78. any problems.  I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for 
  79.  
  80. DOS users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want or need  
  81. and we'll work something out.

  83. TRUE TYPE VS. POST SCRIPT:  
  84.         On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will be  
  85. visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print okay, it  
  86. is just the fact that there are so many points in the character that windows  
  87. decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix this in later  
  88. versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try the Post Script  
  89. version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that the contents of both 
  90.  
  91. fonts are the same.

  94. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ONTO YOUR SYSTEM:  
  95.         You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and the ADOBE TYPE MANAGER (ATM)  
  96. version 2.0 or later.  
  97. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.  
  98. 2) Click the Add button  
  99. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll bars  
  100. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts on the  
  101. disk  
  102. 5) Select the fonts to install  
  103. 6) Click the Add button  
  104. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, depending on  
  105. the version of ATM you have)

  108.         IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to print 
  109.  
  110. out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can either give you 
  111.  
  112. more specific instillation information or go and fix the bug.  (e-mail is  
  113. great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  116. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:  
  117.         You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font for 
  118.  
  119. one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, you  
  120. should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself. (see accompanying "the whole  
  121. story" for why) at the address below.  Please include a brief note describing 
  122.  
  123. where you got this font, what you like about it, and what you would like to  
  124. see added to it.  
  125.         If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts (see  
  126. "the whole story"), send a FORMATTED 3.5" HD disk (they won't all fit on an  
  127. 800k disk any more) and a SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address  
  128. below. (I hate to format disks and you will be sure to get the right machine,

  133. honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American way and my

  139. THE FINE PRINT:  
  140. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you keep  
  141. Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.

  143. -You may NOT use this font, Passenger Font, in any publication or any product

  145. unless you register your copy of Passenger Font by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT  
  146. YOU USE.  Be sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not  
  147. fair for you to make money off of my hard work without paying the Shareware  
  148. fees.

  164. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?  
  165.         Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  166.  
  167. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  Ignoring

  169. all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will speed up the  
  170. development of new train fonts and help me afford new font tools.  My goal is 
  171.  
  172. to at least break even.  
  173.         Only 17 people have registered my shareware products since I first  
  174. released them six months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that go into these 
  175.  
  176. fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are the little expenses  
  177. like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how many ink cartridges I go  
  178. through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  And you want to talk about  
  179. memory... 30 Meg of hard disk devoted to fonts and icon development.

  182. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:  
  183.         Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for you!?

  185. I will spend less time on school and more time on producing shareware.  You  
  186. will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If you send a disk  
  187. along with your payment, I will give the Demo font that includes all of the  
  188. odd characters that haven't quite found a home yet (including a number of  
  189. steam engines!).  In addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions

  217. good for titles and page numbers.
