CF-104G Starfighter Nov 7,92
created and copyright by Vic Palermo CIS 70632,752
The "Missile with a man in it" is the way the F-104 was described.
It certainly was an interesting airplane but a bitch to fly. In the
USAF, only experinced pilots were transfered to F104 units, as it was
known as a rookie killer. In Germany, it was known as the "Widow Maker".
The files in this upload are a Multi-player and a non-multi player
version of the same basic aircraft, a CF-104G of the Canadian Armed
forces. The real aircraft was silver with white wings, I have used
grey instead. The aircraft depicted belonged to No 427 Squadron.
The Multi-player version lacks the wing tanks, while the Non-multiplayer
version has the tanks, this is a good way to tell them apart, otherwise
they fly the same.
A few words of experience in flying the one-oh-four. I tweaked the model
to fairly represent how the plane flew. It was a bitch in real life and
it is a challenge to fly in FS as well. The thing to remember is to
not get behind the power curve at any time. Also, to fly the real
plane, as well as this simulation, you will do a lot of trim work.
Good Starfighter pilots were masters of the thumb trim switch! Poor ones
didn't stick around long. However, once you master this flight model it
is really rewarding to fly. Ok, the advise. On takeoff, set first position
flaps, trim up a notch, and hit full power. Rotate at 180 kts
(those ity bitty wings need some knots to begin flying, and also this is a
good time to say a little prayer) - gear up smartly, and flaps up at
1000' agl. Trim down as needed. Try a roll, you will be amazed! Turning
takes a deft hand, and if you bank an pull too much, look out, the wings
will stall. You must input trim before turning! Practice.
Count on a longer and faster landing approach. NEVER put your power down
below 57% on the landing approach! Once your speed is down to 300-400 kts,
hit the spoilers, at 200-250 kts power up to 61% and trim up a little, and
put first position flaps. At 200 kts, hit second position flaps and 57% power
At 190 Kts hit full flaps, gear, and power up to 61% and trim as needed.
You will approach at 180 kts or so! You will be amazed at how quick the
runway comes up. At 20' agl power to idle and touchdown with slight
back pressure to hit on the main gear. Nothing to it!
The most common problem with the 104 is it's ability to stop flying. You
must realy watch and monitor your vvi (Verticle velocity Indicator). If
you find yourself with the vvi showing a large dive rate, yet you are nose
level, and you have forward velocity, albiet slowing,
it means that the little wings are not working. You are in a flat
spin, without the spin! You are now a brick! To get out of this, hope
that you have some forward velocity left. Trim up to put the nose up, hit
full power and watch the vvi, as soon as you see a decrease in the down-
ward velocity, pull back gently on the stick. Done soon enough and your
flying again, but act quick 'cause before you can say "Chuck Yeager" you
could be in the ground.
Have fun with this one! I have added a little extra besides flaps and
retractable gear to this sim. The best way to see this effect is to
set up your spot plane about 20 feet above and about 250 feet back to
one of the rear quaters. Hit the spot plane view. Select flaps, trim
and hit full power (the F2 key). Hope you like the Starfighter pattened
takeoff! The bleedthrough problem is not too severe either.
Please, any suggestions are welcomed. I have encluded the files
necessary for these aircraft:
README 1ST - this file
F104G___ - the two Non-Multi player files to put into your fs directory
F104G___ SIM
F104G-MP SIM - the two multi-plyer files to put into your fs directory
F104G-MP
Note: AAF is not needed to fly this sim.
Any response would be welcomed. Especially any Further ideas on how to prevent
colour bleed through. I will upload the reference sim file and AFX file if
there is any interest in these files
ciao and enjoy
