DOOM Version 1.2 .LMP Recorded Film Submissions
Here's a bunch of completed Multi/Three-Player (IPX) Net-DOOM .LMP
recordings of the First Episode of DOOM for you all to savour :-)
They should work with either of the "Free" or Registered releases
of that "non-windoze application", DOOM (tm) - Version 1.2...
Q. We've got some PC's networked together and have played Net-DOOM
on them. Will these recordings work over our network?
A. Probably, if you follow these instructions, they worked for us...
Q. I've got a PC that's networked. I've played DOOM but I've never
played Net-DOOM. Will these recordings work on my machine?
A. Probably, if you follow these instructions, they worked for me...
Q. I've got a PC and no it's not networked - it doesn't even have a
'Net card in it. I've played DOOM :-) but I've never even seen a
Network DOOM game :-( sniff. Will these recordings work on my PC?
A. Probably, if you follow these instructions, it worked for them...
Yes! Anyone out there who's got DOOM to work on their PC or PC's
should be able to view these these multi/three-player DOOM .LMP
recordings. I've not seen any more than the very occasional single
two-player (Ep1Lv1) .LMP recording nor have I seen any descriptions
of how this can be done out there on the internet so here goes...
To play a Net-DOOM session you need two to four PC's, that are each
capable of playing DOOM, that are on the same network - see your
local Net-Person to set them all up or read the DOOM FAQ and the
Net-DOOM FAQ that are out there somewhere, they might help but I'm
sorry this bit is beyond me at the mo :-(. - then run the supplied
DOOM SETUP Program (That's "SETUP", NOT "DOOM", BUT "SETUP") and
follow the prompts... "Run network/modem/serial game"... "IPX-
compatible network"... check the boxes for "2, 3 or 4 players";
"Episode Knee-Deep..., Shores of Hell, or Inferno"; your chosen
skill level "I'm too young to die" thru to "NightMare!"; and also
whether you want to play "Cooperatively" or run a "Deathmatch
Showdown!". All players should select the SAME Settings otherwise
the game can get a bit "wierd" - one Co-op. "vote" over-rides any
DeathMatch! "vote"... erm... not too sure 'bout the rest...
Better still, specify your selections on the command line eg...
> IPXSETUP -devparm -nodes 3 -skill 4 -episode 2
IPX-Net, Three players, UltraViolent, Shores of Hell - or even ...
> IPXSETUP -devparm -nodes 3 -skill 4 -warp 1 4
IPX-Net, Three players, UltraViolent, Knee-Deep, Command Control !
... as this additionally allows the start Level to be specified.
To record a Net DOOM session you need to start the game from the
command line by typing on EACH PC that's setup and ready to play
(not "DOOM" or "SETUP" rather) something along the lines of :
> IPXSETUP -devparm -nodes 3 -skill 4 -warp 1 4 -record ep1lv4
IPXSETUP - Setup Net-DOOM game with the following parameters...
-devparm - "DEVelopment PARaMeters" (I think; it's not documented)
This is required for the following to work properly :
-Skill X (?)
-Episode X (?)
-Warp X Y [!]
-Record FileName [!]
-NoMonsters (?)
-Respawn (?)
-nodes 3 - Number of nodes ready to play Net-DOOM. If too few,
someone will get left out of the game and if too many,
the others wait forever for the final node to join in.
-skill 4 - The skill level that you'd like to play at...
1 is "I'm too young to die"; 2 is "Hey not too rough";
3 is "Hurt me plenty" and the default; 4 is "Ultra-
Violence" and is strongly recomended; and 5 is for
"NightMare!" (respawning & evil tempered enemies) and
is only really for the psycho's amongst you!
-warp 1 4 - Start the game (recording) at episode 1, 2 or 3 for
Episodes Knee-Deep..., Shores of Hell, or Inferno. If
you've only got the shareware version - Shame On You -
you'll only be able to play the First Episode; and at
Level No. 1 to 9 ("9" is the Episode's "Secret" Level!)
-record - With some file-name WITHOUT the ".LMP" extension - it
will be added automatically. You can use any valid DOS
eight character filename but it's probably a good idea
to use a name relevant to the game recording hence the
example of "ep1lv4"
Oh yeah. I almost forgot to say this. The actual recorded game file
- the ".LMP" - will be the *SAME* on each PC - SAME length, SAME
contents - try copying the file from one node to floppy (it'll fit
okay), taking it to another of the nodes and doing a COMP with the
other ".LMP" - they will be identical, byte-for-byte. So, If you
want to keep your recordings you only need to keep one ".LMP" from,
or on, one of the nodes involved. Right, that's clear isn't it...
There, that seems simple enough doesn't it? However there are a few
points to note - but I'll cover those later...
Q. Hang on a moment - I want to playback these recorded demos here,
I'm not interested in all of this "how-to" stuff. How do I play
these recordings on my Non-networked PC like you said I could?
A. A little bit impatient aren't we now - I'll come to that real
soon now. You might have guessed that those of us that have got
PC's that are capable of playing Net-DOOM should be able to get
that bit more out of Net-DOOM recordings. How? By playing the
recordings back over a networked bunch of PC's, that's how.
To playback a Net-DOOM recording on a bunch of Net-PC's that are
capeable of playing Net-DOOM. First set them all (2 to 4 PC's but
for the recordings included here 3 is ideal) up ready to play Net-
DOOM, then copy the required ".LMP" playback file to the DOOM DIR-
ectory on EACH PC then (following on from the above example) type,
again on EACH PC, something along the lines of :
> IPXSETUP -nodes 3 -playdemo ep1lv4
Note - DON'T try to playback a Net-DOOM recording on a single PC or
bunch of networked PC's by typing: "DOOM -playdemo ep1lv4" ,bacause
it WON'T work - the PC will start up DOOM in the usual fashion and
then hit the Net-DOOM recorded file and HANG solid - You'll have to
re-set the PC, or bunch of PC's, by turning it, or them, OFF and
then on again, to recover from this. The ".LMP" files created by a
single player DOOM recorded game and those files created by an
IPXSETUP recorded game are incompatable !!!
[ For a much extended Note on this (and another possible
related) problem, please see the very end of this .DOC ]
Node 1 will playback the recorded game from Marine Green's point of
view... ie. you'll see his Green face flinch when he gets blasted;
you'll be able to view his health, armour and ammo status readings;
AND you'll be able to HEAR Green shoot his load, (sorry weapon ;-)
grunt when he jumps or gets hit, and scream if he dies; and you'll
also HEAR what's going on AROUND Green but only Marine Green. Got
that??? This means that if you switch to see the recording from
Brown's or Indigo's (or, if available, Red's) point of view, you
will STILL see Green's face, health, armour and ammo on screen and
you'll STILL hear the game from Green's "world view" even though
you are seeing the game through the eyes of a different Marine.
This is all, IMHO, a bit on the strange side of things !!!
Node 2 will playback the recorded game from Marine Indigo's point
of view ie. you'll see Indigo's face, health, armour and ammo
status and you'll hear the game from Indigo's "World View" and only
Indigo's view even if you switch to a different Marines Vision.
Node 3 will playback the recorded game from Marine Brown's point
of view ie you'll see Brown's face, health, armour and ammo status
and hear the game from Browns's "World View" but only Brown's view.
[ Node 4 WOULD (if it was available) playback the recorded
game from Marine Red's point of view ie. you'd see Red's
face, health, armour and ammo status; and you'd hear the
game from Red's "World View" but again, only Red's view. ]
If you've only got TWO PC's networked use :
> IPXSETUP -nodes 2 -playdemo ep1lv4
Node 1 will playback the recorded game from Green's "World View".
Node 2 will playback the recorded game from Indigo's "World View".
If you've only got ONE PC networked (?) use :
> IPXSETUP -nodes 1 -playdemo ep1lv4
This will playback the recorded game from Green's "World View" and
only from Green's World View even if you switch to a different
Marine's vision of the recorded game the status wiil still be G's.
Remember,
press the "F12" key to switch between different player's views.
Enjoy !
Right then, this last example - being able to playback a Net-DOOM
recorded game on a SINGLE networked PC - is the clue to being able
to playback a Net-DOOM recorded game on a NON-networked PC !!!
All that needs to be done is to some how fool DOOM (the game) or
rather the IPXSETUP program part of the game into "believing" that
there is a Net-Card, or rather the IPX Net-Software, installed in
the PC - or at least in its RAM memory...
Q. Come on now. How do I do this on my PC? Tell me! How?
A. Okay, Now I'll tell you. Here's how... Happy Now... ?
Simply load some Net-software! IPXSETUP won't work without some
Net-Software but the Net-Software will (often?) load without a
Net-Card even being installed in the PC - it's dumb that way but
it does work. I was amazed when I first discovered this... but I
was using some commercial Net-Software so couldn't really [ :-( ]
consider distributing it. Anyway, I had a trawl through the files
on the Then DOOM Only FTP site and found an alternative that also
worked on a Non-networked PC.
So, here you are - the following commands should persuade DOOM, or
rather IPXSETUP, that you've got some Net-Software loaded and thus,
allow you to playback a Net-DOOM Recording by going into "Single
Node Multiplayer" mode.
FAKENET.BAT (or have a look at NETTEST.BAT)
> lh ne2000 0x60 5 0x340
> lh ipxpd
Again, this should work even if your PC is not properly networked
or even if no Net-Card exists in your PC - it will just return a
'Net Address of - FF:FF:FF...
ne2000.com is (c) Russell Nelson - "free software" :-)
ipxpd.com was ripped out of oldipx.zip @ ocf.unt.edu - R.I.P
which was uploaded by Steve Bonds, the author of the IPX FAQ.
So, there shouldn't be any problems in distributing these :-)
Then, as I said before, use something along the lines of :
> IPXSETUP -nodes 1 -playdemo ep1lv4
Better still, take a look my NETDEMO.BAT and then go to PLNR.BAT
And now I'll repeat this para' for those that skipped it, above,...
Node 1 will playback the recorded game from Marine Green's point of
view... ie. you'll see his Green face flinch when he gets blasted;
you'll be able to view his health, armour and ammo status readings;
The short version of these instructions goes like this :
Be ready to play doom (you do need to get that sorted first).
Put all the required .LMP etc. files in your DOOM Directory.
Try, NETTEST.BAT - it fakes the Net-s/w, then plays TEST.LMP
If that works okay, use, NETDEMO.BAT - and enjoy the show :)
Next time round, Use, FAKENET.BAT - just once each session,
this loads the Net-TSR's - then NETDEMO.BAT or do your own.
CORD.BAT and PLAY.BAT - record and playback single-player
(standard) DOOM .LMP files...
MREC.BAT and PLNR.BAT - record and playback multi-player
IPXSETUP (different) .LMP files.
The advantage of playing back Net-DOOM recordings over a network
are that you are actually able to view the health, armour and ammo
status' of Indigo, Brown and Red rather than just those of Marine
Green. This really makes a big difference - it can be a little
difficult to work out what is/was going on if you've no idea how
"happy" the others are in terms of health and weapons. Also, as I
said before - hearing the game only from one guys point of view
can get to be really annoying, especially if you split up to do
different jobs in different areas of particular levels, you can't
hear what's going on and if Green is busy - that gets irritating.
I wasn't going to mention this, but you can also use this Single
Net-Player method to record a slightly (but significantly 8-) ?)
different one-player version of Each level of DOOM...
> IPXSETUP -devparm -nodes 1 -skill S -warp E L -record epElvL
Where...
^ ^ ^ ^ ^
S is the skill level - 1 to 5
E is the Episode No. - 1 to 3
& L is the Level No. - 1 to 9
Note - DON'T Forget that you MUST also use IPXSETUP to play these
Single NET(!)-Player recordings or Else they'll CRASH the PC :-(
Alternativly, you could even play though entire Episodes of Net-
DOOM in Single Net-Player mode... This would then let you get to
use the bonus weapons that are only in a Net-Game... For example
both the rocket launcher and chaingun in Ep1Lv1 could be rather
handy in Level 2 !! - Normally, you would only have a shotgun.
[ Would someone care to document the Net-differences for the FAQ ]
An additional advantage in playing a Net-DOOM game - depending on
how good | bad you are, if | when you get killed | die - when you
respawn back to life at the beginning of the level, the monsters
that were killed are still dead! OK - you already knew that, but
did you know that it's the same for Single Player Net-DOOM game.
So, anyone can finish (almost) any level by using multiple lives
until everything is down, all the "goodies" are got and all the
secrets are solved - just save and then retry, over and over...
However, there is a down-side to playing Net-DOOM - even in Single
Player Mode - you can't cheat ( NO iddqd idkfa iddt etc. :-( but
they don't work if you're recording a session anyway, so :-) ) and
also you can't pickup the "sticky" weapons if you already have one
of the same type eg. if there are two "sticky" chainguns on a level
you only get to pickup one - you won't be able to pickup the second
one, even if you've run out of bullets. This effect may even exist
across levels - I'm not too sure, maybe you'd like to try it...
For those of you that are wondering what a "sticky" weapon is - try
playing Net-DOOM and when you find and pickup a decent weapon eg. a
chain-gun or a rocket-launcher or better :-) turn around and see if
it's still there. If it is, then that's one of them ! - It's still
"stuck" there so that any other Net-Player (if there are any ;-) )
can also pick them up - once, and only once, hence the restriction!
Anyway, now for a few notes on recording Multi-player Net-DOOM
sessions. The word on The NET is that the ".LMP" recorded files
can only be so long. The recorded files are an "image" of the
key-strokes that made up the actual game-play. I would guess that
DOOM uses a buffer to store these key-strokes and when it's full
the game bombs and you get no recording :-( Personally I think
this is a bit poor, but we can't have everything, can we :-() I
was going to guess that this buffer was 128K but one of our saved
recordings is a bit bigger than this; anyway I reckon it's about
128K. For a One-Player game the longest time that you can record
for, using keyboard only, is about 20 minutes. Using a mouse this
figure seems to come down a bit to about 18 minutes. No, I don't
know why this is or even if it's at all true - I'm guessing. Well
anyway, when recording a two-player game, there are twice as many
key-stoke inputs to hold is this fixed-size buffer. So, the max.
length for a two-player recorded game comes right down to just
nine minutes. This appears to be similarly true for multi- three
and four player recorded games.
1 Marine Game - max. record time is approx. 18 mins.
2 Marine Team - max. record time is approx. 9 mins.
3 Marine Team - max. record time is approx. 6 mins.
4 Marine Team - max. record time is approx. 4 mins. 30 secs.
What we do know, for sure, is that if our attempted three-player
game recording approached six minutes the game will bomb and NO
recorded file will get generated. This happened all the time and
we were never able to get around this limitation. This is why all
of our multi-player recordings are so very short and only some of
the game objectives are completed. If you know of any way to get
around this time-limit problem, let us all know the solution. Oh,
four-and-a-half minutes for a four player game is just too short,
that's why Marine Red got kicked; and a two-player game doesn't
look too much better than a single player game. The Three Marine
Team was a bit of a compromise.
If you take the time to look at the accompanying ".TXT" files
you'll see that "be careful, don't get killed and be quick" are
the usual "standing orders". There's a simple reasoning behind
this, firstly the view from a dead marine ain't too exciting and
secondly, if the dead marine's "controller", that's the chappy on
the keyboard, presses the spacebar - thus attempting to respawn -
the game quits on all multi-player's PC's and an unsuccessful 8(
game recording is generated. At least this game exit is clean and
pressing "F3" (or the "up" arrow if Doskey is loaded :) will give
another attempt at the same "mission". This is also the reason
why a "Death-Match" recording is impossable - as soon as one guy
attempts to respawn, it's all over! This is true even if you do
remember to specify the required "-deathmatch" (and -"nomonsters"
too, to make things simple) parameter on both recording and play-
back. Just for fun you could try recording a death-match session
until just one marine is left - then play it back without using
"-deathmatch" on the command line of EACH PC when trying to view
it. A similar problem shows up if you record a session with the
"-nomonsters" parameter specified and then try to play it back
without the "-nomonsters" parameter - "he wasn't there before and
now my marine's going nowhere and is blasting away at the walls!".
This is further justification that the ".LMP" files just consists
of key-stoke (and mouse movement) input which is re-played. In
fact, I'm quite amazed that it's possible to track the mouse
movements and record them acurately enough to produce a working
recorded game file - "working" in that it plays back the same as
it was recorded...
Oh, I forgot to mention that these (rather limited) DeathMatch
recordings can be uninspiring on playback. There's the problem
(feature) in that the ability to switch (F12) between different
players view-points is disabled - both on recording AND even on
playback. So when your man gets snuffed all you get to see is
the view from the ground towards the guy that got you. And when
he's down - just a static screen unless someone disappears by.
If you do record a DeathMatch, it's simply not worth playing it
back - it just gets to be... so boring... "Oh, I'm dead again"
And finally, this warping to a particular level is fine, if it's
possible to complete the level if you only begin with a pistol.
With Episodes 2 and 3... I'm not so sure... maybe they are all
"possible" - okay they ARE all possible at least in one-player
mode starting with just a pistol. I've seen the ".LMP"s... but
in multi-player mode, with less than half the time... anyway,
what we're looking for is some way of saving a multi-player game
so that it's possible to re-load from that point with all those
nice weapons :-) AND, and this is a big AND, be able to record
the game from that point on to the end of the level, or death.
We've tried to do this, but it simply just does not work :-(((
ie. -LoadGame X -Record filename - NOPE (doesn't record !)
or: -RecordFrom X filename - NOPE (missing them weapons !)
I'm also looking Ultmaps2 Ultmaps3 or a way of creating them...
That is - Full properly proportioned Maps of Episodes 2 and 3
basically to help plan out any further adventures...
Episode 1 is well explored but the others...
Is there anybody out there...
Many Thanx 8=) that's a big :-) to the following...

I originally wrote the following in the middle of this .DOC, but
started rambling and doubting, doubting...
Any ideas, anybody out there, please, this could be a problem...
Erm, I'm not sure what will happen if you try to playback a THREE
node (-nodes 3) Net-DOOM recording over a FOUR node network. It
will either work, with node FOUR (that's Marine Red) doing the same
as one of the others or it might just sit there waiting forever for
the fourth recorded player to show up, perhaps. Erm, I dunno, I
didn't think to try it, maybe I will before I finish this DOC...
Note - DON'T try to playback a Net-DOOM recording on a single PC or
bunch of networked PC's by typing: "DOOM -playdemo ep1lv4" ,bacause
it WON'T work - the PC will start up DOOM in the usual fashion and
then hit the Net-DOOM recorded file and HANG solid - You'll have to
re-set the PC, or bunch of PC's, by turning it, or them, OFF and
then on again to recover from this. The ".LMP" files created by a
single player DOOM recorded game and those files created by an
IPXSETUP recorded game are incompatible! They may both be ".LMP"
files (perhaps they shouldn't be) but they must be different in
some way [ would someone like to investigate this so we don't have
this problem ] and you should not try to playback a ".LMP" file
unless you know whether to use DOOM or IPXSETUP in order to play it
back successfully - otherwise you have a 50% chance of it all going
horribly wrong. Erm, I just had a thought - can you make Ser-DOOM
recordings if you've got two PC's linked together by modems or a
nul-modem cable by using SERSETUP? And if you can, must you then
use SERSETUP and ONLY SERSETUP to play them back? This would then
mean that we would have THREE different methods of creating ".LMP"
DOOM recordings. And then, with NO WAY of knowing which method was
used to create them, we would have NO reliable WAY of knowing how
it would be possible to view these .LMP files - which of the three
"methods" would you choose - first? With TWO of the THREE methods
being the wrong one to choose... Hey, I make that now a 66% chance
of it all going horribly wrong !!!... Erm, this is getting to be
horribly complicated. Playing DOOM recordings could get to be a
rather hazardous exercise - maybe I shouldn't be writing this...
PS. Does anyone out there know what makes Green - Green; Indigo -
Indigo; (and) Browm - Brown (; and Red - Red). Each time we played
we'd be the same colour marine but we were unable to fix our man-
colours any other way. Does anyone know how, or if, it is possible
to assign different marine colours to different nodes ? I wanna be
black (sorry Indigo) - Green is too bleeding obvious out there and
they always team up and waste me in a deathmatch :( I wonder Y :)
PPS. Is it possible to cheat [iddqd] in a Net-DOOM Game ? Just ME
you understand (I won't tell) - which file(s) need to be hacked ?
DOOM On ;-) ...
