APACHE LONGBOW
(c) Digital Integration Ltd 1995
Installation
------------
Disc space required:
Minimum: 25MB
Medium: 50MB
Maximum: 65MB
The Apache CD-ROM must be in the CD-ROM drive to run Apache after
installation.
System configuration
--------------------
Adjusting the Visual Detail slider on the Preferences screen will determine
how smoothly the program runs. Move the slider to the far left for minimum
visual detail and minimum visual range. Move the slider towards the
centre to increase visual "quality" e.g. shading, texturing. Moving the
slider beyond the centre will increase visual range. Selecting the lower
screen resolution (320 by 240) will give a significant increase in speed
on slower computers.
Mission Briefing
----------------
1) Briefing screen
During mission briefing and debriefing, several windows may be open
simultaneously. Each window may be repositioned by placing the mouse
cursor near the top of the window and holding down the left mouse button.
When you see the drag cursor (four arrows) appear, the window may be
repositioned by moving the mouse with the left button pressed. Release
the mouse button when the window is in the desired position. When windows
overlap, clicking on the required window will bring it to the front.
Windows may be maximised by clicking at the top right hand corner of the
window. Windows may be closed by clicking on the Close box at the top
left hand corner. If more text is available than will fit in the window,
click and drag on the slider bar on the left hand side of the window to
view the additional text. Some windows (such as Waypoint Info) have a drag
button at the lower right hand corner. Click and drag to adjust window size.
Click on the Briefing button at the top right corner of the screen to
open the Briefing window.
2) Debrief
After your flight you will arrive at the Debrief screen. Details of your
achievements will be shown in the Debrief window. You may close and
reopen this window by clicking on the Debrief button.
Mission tips
------------
1) Mission success depends upon the combined efforts of both you and your
wingmen so it is feasible to pass a mission by letting your wingmen do all
the work. An "outstanding" rating depends upon how many targets you
destroy, excluding targets destroyed by your wingmen. If you allow your
wingmen to fly ahead of you they will inevitably reduce your chances of an
"outstanding" rating. Flying ahead of your wingmen is obviously more
dangerous.
2) Whenever you land in allied territory you will be prompted with the
message "End mission Y/N". Press Y to go to the debrief screen or N to
continue with the mission. If you land in enemy territory, the message
will not be displayed. This allows you to touch down momentarily when
hiding from air defences. If you land in enemy territory with both engines
failed then you will not get the "End mission Y/N" message but you will not
be able to continue. In this event press Ctrl Q to quit the mission and
go to the debrief.
Network Tips
------------
1) Shoot the other players.
2) Hide behind hills. This masks you from other players, and you can pop up
to shoot them down.
3) Hide in the bottom of valleys, and shoot players when they enter the
valley.
4) Use AGM-114A's by firing them into the air at about 45 degrees, and
then a few seconds later, pop up, aquire the target, and watch the missiles
just all stream in.
5) If you have multiple targets in a small area, use AGM-114B's and
Stingers, and let them cycle through all the targets. You may have multiple
kills at the same time.
6) If you are close, and are out of missiles, use the chain gun.
7) If you run out of ALL your weapons, land on the ground but watch out,
since you are a sitting duck on other players radar.
8) Don't crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------
1) Why do I get a negative score in the Network multiplayer game.
In the multiplayer network game you can frequently get scores less than
zero. This is because when you crash into the ground you have one point
taken off your score.
If you land on the ground, any damage you have sustained will be repaired,
and your Apache will be re-armed.
2) I have heard that Apache uses Virtual Memory. What is it?
Apache needs about 32MB of memory to run. Since most machines don't have
that much, we use a system called Virtual Memory. This uses a "Swap" file
in the Apache directory. This swap file can grow up to 24MB in size, but
is deleted after game exit. For Apache to run you must always have 24MB of
hard disk space free.
3) Apache seems to "EAT" up my disk space. What is happening?
If you switch the machine off without exiting Apache, the virtual memory
system becomes confused. If this happens, run the program "SCANDISK" which
is part of DOS. When SCANDISK asks if you wish to delete or recover the
files, select DELETE and then SKIP UNDO.
4) I have an 8MB machine. How can I make Apache run faster?
The easy answer is "Buy more memory". If you are not in a position to do
this, we recommend three things. Firstly, Apache does not use EMS memory
so remove any EMS memory manager that you maybe using, eg. EMM386, or QEMM.
Secondly, remove or reduce any disk caching software that uses XMS memory,
eg. Smartdrv. If you wish to use smartdrv to cache your CD-ROM, reduce its
size to 256k or 512k, eg. "SMARTDRV 256 /X" in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Finally,
if these changes have little effect, reduce the amount of memory that
Apache requires, by selecting 320x240 visual resolution, minimal sound
effects, and minimal visual detail in the preferences screen.
5) My CoolieHat disabled itself, why?
With some sound cards, the joystick port doesn't work very well, meaning
that the coolie hat on the Thrustmaster FCS cannot be read accurately.
Instead of having you looking left, (or other random directions), we
disable the coolie hat.
We would recommend buying a separate joystick card, and disabling the
joystick port on your sound card. These cards can be fitted in minutes.
6) Two Player Network Combat Game
In two player combat, the aim is to kill each other. The game restarts
automatically, and only if you quit using CTRL Q, do you return to the
2 player screen.
What we need to know if you contact technical support
-----------------------------------------------------
1) Version Number
Apache has a version number displayed after you run the program. This is
given as a time and date. If you contact technical support please quote
the version number of apache.
2) Memory
Since Apache is dependant on lots of memory, can you please tell us how
much RAM and hard disk space you have before you tell us the problem.
3) Machine Type
The name and type of your machine is very useful.
4) Machine Configuration
We may also ask for other information including:
DOS version
Installed Software
Contents of your CONFIG.SYS
Contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT
