  76. WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  77.  
  78. SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way to
  79. capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in 1991.
  80. In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls SnagIt "the
  81. print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  82.  
  83. SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, a portion of
  84. the screen, or a single window or icon.  SnagIt also accepts input from
  85. the Windows clipboard, or a Windows bitmap (BMP) file.
  86.  
  87. Once captured, SnagIt sends the image to the printer, the clipboard, or
  88. a file, depending on the output option specified.
  89.  
  90. Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such as
  91. word processors and desktop publishing programs via the Windows
  92. clipboard, or by saving the image to a graphic file and later importing
  93. the file into the desired application.
  94.  
  95. SnagIt functionality can easily be added to other Windows applications
  96. since SnagIt provides full DDE support.

  120. SNAGIT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  121.  
  122. In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  123.  
  124. > An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware requirements
  125.   of Microsoft Windows;
  126.  
  127. > Microsoft Windows 3.x or Windows for Workgroups 3.x;
  128.  
  129. > A mouse or other pointing device;
  130.  
  131. > For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print bitmaps.
  132.   (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet printers that
  133.   Windows supports.  Plotters cannot print bitmaps, and so cannot print
  134.   images captured with SnagIt.)

  137. USING SNAGIT'S ON-LINE HELP
  138.  
  139. SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows 3.x Help
  140. subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information you'll
  141. need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation procedure. This
  142. (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  143.  
  144. To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then Help
  145. Index from the drop-down menu.  
  146.  
  147. To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from the
  148. Help menu.
  149.  
  150. To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type, select
  151. System Info from the Help menu.

  153. When you register SnagIt, you will receive a printed manual in addition
  154. to the Windows Help file for reference.

  180. INSTALLING SNAGIT
  181.  
  182. The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows 
  183. application.  You must have Windows 3.x installed prior to installing
  184. SnagIt.  To install SnagIt, perform the following steps:
  185.  
  186. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  187.  
  188. 2. Insert the SnagIt diskette into a floppy drive.
  189.  
  190. 3. From the Program Manager menu, choose File, and select Run
  191.    from the drop-down menu.
  192.  
  193. 4. From the File Run dialog box, enter:
  194.         a:\setup
  195.    (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than the
  196.    A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the command 
  197.    line above.)
  198.  
  199. 5. Click the OK button.  You will see a setup dialog box.
  200.  
  201. 6. Under "User Information", enter your name and company name, if
  202.    applicable.
  203.  
  204. 7. Under "Load Information", enter the name of the directory where you
  205.    want to install SnagIt, or accept the default Windows directory.
  206.    (If you specify a directory that does not exist, SnagIt will create
  207.    the directory.)  
  208.  
  209.    Then, enter the Windows group to which SnagIt should be added or
  210.    accept the default Accessories group.  (If you specify a group that
  211.    does not exist, SnagIt will create the new group.)
  212.  
  213. 8. When you have finished entering the setup information, click the
  214.    INSTALL button.  SnagIt will be installed into the group you specified
  215. .

  217.  
  218. UNINSTALLING SNAGIT
  219.  
  220. If after installing SnagIt, you find it necessary to remove SnagIt from
  221. your computer, perform the following steps:
  222.  
  223. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  224.  
  225. 2. In Program Manager, find the program group that SnagIt was installed
  226.    in. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete
  227.    key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  228.  
  229. 3. Run File Manager and change to the directory that you installed SnagIt
  230.    in. Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  231.  
  232. 4. If you selected "Load SnagIt when Windows Starts" when installing
  233.    SnagIt, you will need to edit the WIN.INI file.
  234.  
  235.    Make sure to make a backup copy of WIN.INI before editing it! Change
  236.    to the Windows directory in File Manager and select the WIN.INI file.
  237.    Choose File Copy and create a backup copy of WIN.INI.
  238.  
  239.    Double click on WIN.INI to run Notepad to edit the file (you may use
  240.    any text editor). Find the LOAD= line in the [Windows] section of the
  241.    WIN.INI file. Delete from that line the program SNAGIT.EXE.
  242.  
  243.    Save your changes and exit Notepad (or your editor).
  244.  
  245.  
  246. STARTING SNAGIT
  247.  
  248. To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  249. group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during SnagIt
  250. installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  251.  
  252. Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring it to
  253. the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is maximized, you may
  254. change any of the setup options (input, output, format, etc.) from the
  255. SnagIt menus.
  256.  
  257. You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an image)
  258. while it is maximized, though it will usually be more convenient to
  259. minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  260.  
  261. If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during installati
  262. on,
  263. SnagIt will start automatically the next time you start Windows.
  264.  
  265.  
  266. SNAGIT DEFAULT SETTINGS
  267.  
  268. When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  269.  
  270. > Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked, it 
  271.   will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  272.  
  273. > Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked, it
  274.   will send the captured image to the Windows default printer for 
  275.   printing.
  276.  
  277. > Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the image
  278.   with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can print images 
  279.   using this format setting, even if your printer is not a color printer.
  280.   For additional information about SnagIt format options, see the Format
  281.   options topic in the SnagIt Help file.)
  282.  
  283. > Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt will output the image at
  284.   the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen. This setting
  285.   may result in a smaller printed image than you want; to adjust the imag
  286. e
  287.   size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help file.
  288.

  292. You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom of
  293. the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.

  295. INVOKING SNAGIT WITH <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  296.  
  297. Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are ready to 
  298. perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  299.  
  300. The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  301. When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined by 
  302. the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the output 
  303. device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different hotkey combinatio
  304. n,
  305. see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help file.

  307. USING THE MOUSE TO SELECT IMAGES
  308.  
  309. You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  310. The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  311.  
  312. Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen regions
  313.                 and windows to capture.
  314.  
  315. Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press it
  316.                 before you finish making the selection (that is, before
  317.                 you release the left mouse button).

  319. REGISTERING SNAGIT
  320.  
  321. This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation package
  322. that is copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation and is not in the public
  323. domain. If you use this program beyond the 30-day evaluation period, you
  324. must register it.  The files that comprise the SnagIt evaluation package,
  325. or the SnagIt archived file (SNAGIT25.ZIP), may be freely distributed as
  326. long as files in the package are kept together and are not modified.
