Dear Sir,
Space Encyclopedia software
At the recent 'Acorn World' exhibition, I bought a CD-ROM from your
stand, the signature on the receipt looks like P.Mc...... (Mostly illegible).
Now that I have tried to run it for myself I find that although there
are some nice images, the software which drives them is very badly written,
and when I do illegal things the whole computer hangs, and need a 'Reset' to
revive it. The instructions on how to use the product are poor, and have not
been spell checked, without really looking for errors in the !help file I
found the following, "with you computer", "repaly", "dilogue","truning the
pages","interective help".
I was using an A540 with 12Mbytes of memory running RISC OS3.1, and the
Acorn Multimedia expansion unit. I normally use Mode 27, Mode 15 seemed to
be slightly less fragile. The errors are seldom repeatable, sometimes a
'hang' occurs, at other times doing exactly the same sequence of operations
it runs without trouble. Here is one set of operations I did. click on
'Search', ask for 'mars', 'viewlist', then click on the line Viking1 (6).
This causes some CD-Rom activity, but then the whole computer 'hangs'
Another problem is that after clicking on !Space and getting the main
window, it is not possible to hold down SHIFT and click on !Space again, in
an attempt to be able to see the instructions at the same time as the
running application. The pointer changes to an 'hourglass' icon and again
the computer 'hangs'.
I am very disappointed, I had thought 'Cumana' were a reputable company,
whose products were reliable. This one looks as if it needs several more
weeks of testing before it is in a fit state to be distributed.
Please can you tell your software supplier about these problems and ask
how I can get a corrected version of the software when it it ready.
I am an Acorn Registered Developer and am hoping to develop applications
for teaching materials science using CD-ROM.
Yours faithfully,
K.M.Crennell
