Digitising
==========
The 2 sprites are the source digitised images from the
'Aspects of digitising' article. Both were grabbed from TV
broadcasts and digitised using an HCCS Vision24 digitiser.
They have been reduced to 256-colour sprites to fit on the
disc.
Snooker
-------
The Crucible, Sheffield... Pre-recorded onto SVHS tape
(nominally 400 lines horizontal resolution). A fairly
static shot and reasonably noise-free but note that, even
though captured on a Hi-band system, there is evidence of
'ringing' as described in the article. Being forced to use
composite connections will have contributed to this
degradation. If the image is zoomed up to at least 3:1,
most vertical and some diagonal lines will be seen to have a
'ghost' image immediately to the right of the signal, very
evident on:
Å The player's arms (where the colour changes suddenly
from the bright white shirt to the green baize).
Å The player's leg and derriΦre (where the red carpet
goes to black trousers).
Racehorse
---------
The 3.15 at Haydock... If the image is again zoomed up to
3:1, the 'zig-zag' effect on the hind legs and elsewhere, as
discussed in the article, is clearly evident. Indeed, with a
bit of imagination, it is possible to see how the badly
blurred forelegs are actually splitting into 2 separate
images, caused by the legs' movement in the 1/50 second
between the 'snap-shots' of the 2 separate fields.
Note: Don't be put off digitising by these 2 dodgy examples
---- which are intended to illustrate some of the problem
areas and quality degradation. Other, better
examples are available from me on receipt of 1 or 2
formatted discs and sufficient return postage (please
send them in a Jiffy bag as I've already bust my
floppy due to a dikky disc arriving in a plain
envelope. Aaaaaaaaaaaah).
