ACORN ONLINE MEDIA SET-TOP BOX WINS
CABLE & SATELLITE SHOW AWARD
- Acorn's innovative technology marches on ...
London, England - Acorn Online Media's 32-bit RISC intelligent digital
set-top box, the STB2, has won the 'Most innovative cable or satellite
telecommunications product' award at the 1996 Cable & Satellite Show.
The STB2 was the first product to be based on the ground-breaking
ARM7500 chip, developed by Advanced RISC Machines Ltd (ARM) and Acorn
Online Media. It is commercially available and licensable.
Launched in March 1995, the Acorn Online Media STB2 provides a high
performance, cost-effective and affordable solution for interactive
television (iTV) and has been in use in the UK on the Cambridge iTV Trial
and by Westminster Cable for its VOD (Video On Demand) service.
Simon Wyatt, Acorn Online Media's General Manager, commented, "The STB2's
open architecture means that it is the best choice for interactive
multimedia, be it broadband or narrowband. Acorn Online Media is
dedicated to being the world's leading authority on iTV and I am
delighted we have been awarded such an important industry award. It is a
very exciting time for Acorn technology and our partners who are
licensing it."
The STB2 was designed from the outset to support and encourage active
participation, whilst its open architecture, runtime software support and
complete development environment includes a number of advanced design
features which utilise local processing capability. This approach
provides very efficient data handling, resulting in benefits such as
reduced network traffic.
Other STB2 advanced design features include: Macrovision anti-copying
technology, support for multiple authoring environments such as
Macromedia, Oracle and Sybase, mature development tools, multiple network
connectivity and support for multiple server protocols.
Second in the 'Most innovative cable or satellite telecommunications
product' category was Nokia Consumer Electronics' DVB 9500s Multimedia
Terminal with Digital Receiver, followed in third place by Nortel's SDH
transmission product - Nortel Fibre World TN-16X.
