<Heard on the Net>
NetSurfer announced in U.S.
After many rumours Acorn announced its NetSurfer product.
This discless machine has RISC OS and a Web Browser in ROM, 2Mb
on-board RAM and an infra-red keyboard. The machine is targetted
firmly at the low-end/home market. Users simply plug one cable into
their home TV and another into a telephone socket. A built-in
14400bps modem provides the link to the internet. Acorn are keen to
find companies looking to licence the technology and a partner to
launch the product.
Development on the machine doesn't stop there - the next generation of
products will run Sun's HotJava (currently being ported to the ARM
platform). The device will also have the ability to be hooked up to a
set-top-box for video on demand applications.
The price tag when the device is launched in the UK is expected to be
around ú300.
