Dear Gerald
I have followed your Friday 13th competition with interest, especially
Robert Macmillan's claim to be both shortest and quickest. I would not
usually enter but have a look at the enclosed "Fridays" sheet.
I do not know how you should time it but if you set AutoRecalc off,
load the file and then Recalculate it takes 1 min 17 sec on my A5000 in
a high-resolution mode, a good bit less in Mode 0.
As for shortness, it depends on how you look at the problem. This
solution requires only one piece of data in A1 and two formulas in A2
and B1 which are replicated, but it does use a lot of rows!
There are a few changes that can run faster or make it more readable
but overall I prefer this version.
For sheer speed a separate Basic program wins hands down. The file
"FridaysB" takes about half a second, most of which is spent filling an
array with the month lengths and printing the result and it still does
not use any programmer's tricks to speed it up.
