  18. Dear Gerald,

  20.       I wonder whether you could help me to improve the enclosed 
  21. spreadsheet which I have designed in response to my daughter who is a 
  22. keen football fan and Spurs supporter!
  23.       As you will see, it is a record of matches played in the Premier 
  24. League this season. The range B2F465 records the date, home and 
  25. away teams and the goals scored. I have given names to each column 
  26. of the database and these are used in the league table in the 
  27. range G1P26.
  28.       My questions/problems about this spreadsheet are threefold.

  30. 1.    To derive the league table, I have used database functions, 
  31. incorporating names where possible -although if I use, for 
  32. example, Date instead of HomeScore in I2, I get an error message 
  33. which I don't understand! Anyway, I wonder if Database functions 
  34. are the best approach.

  36. 2.    This leads to my second question -because every time I enter a 
  37. SINGLE new result (involving only two teams!) the spreadsheet has to 
  38. recalculate the whole league table and even with an A5000 this does 
  39. take some time. I would ideally like to find a way of entering a single 
  40. result, and only the two effected teams in the league table being 
  41. recalculated.

  43. 3.      My third and final question is how do I get the league 
  44. table ranked in points order to find out the leader etc? At the moment, 
  45. after entering a series of results I wait for recalculation to cease 
  46. and then do a Block Sort -this does rank the teams correctly but also 
  47. sets off another round of recalculation. Help!

  49.         I would be most grateful for any advice you could give. 
  50. If you think it would be of any interest I am willing to provide 
  51. an updated version of the database for PipeLine4 readers.

  53.         Finally may I take the opportunity of thanking you for 
  54. PipeLine4. Thanks to this I am just beginning to understand 
  55. Arrays, Custom Functions and the like. PipeDream 4 is an 
  56. excellent programme but it does take some effort to dig out its 
  57. treasures!
