  4. What is the update kit for?
  5. ---------------------------
  6.  
  7. This update kit for !Printers 1.53 tackles two problems that
  8. have affected some users.
  9.  
  10. Most of those affected by the problems will be using RISC OS
  11. 3.1 on older Acorn machines. Not all RISC OS 3.1 users are
  12. affected.
  13.  
  14. A small number of users with RISC OS 3.5 or 3.6 on Risc PC's
  15. or A7000's may be affected.
  16.  
  17. The two problems are:
  18.  
  19.  - Established applications that printed reliably with
  20.    !Printers 1.28 or earlier sometimes/always encounter
  21.    errors and fail to complete a print.
  22.  
  23.  - Newer Hewlett Packard printers cannot be used because
  24.    output to them from the Acorn parallel port is extremely
  25.    slow.
  26.  
  27. These updates are supplied in good faith, and should remove
  28. the above problems entirely. However, please note that it
  29. is not possible for Acorn to test and guarantee the updates
  30. for all applications, nor for all Hewlett Packard printers,
  31. with all combinations of Acorn machine.

  34. Should I install the updates?
  35. -----------------------------

  37. If you are using !Printers 1.53 then we recommend that you
  38. install this update kit.
  39.  
  40. If you are using !Printers 1.52 or earlier, then we recommend
  41. that you obtain !Printers 1.53 and then install this update kit.
  42.  
  43. You can obtain !Printers 1.53 (and this update kit) free from
  44. Acorn's ftp site, or contact your local dealer (and there may
  45. then be a small charge).

  47. Users of !Printers 1.54 should install the RISC OS 3.7 ROM patches 
  48. rather than this patch; the ROM patch is available as
  49. ftp.acorn.co.uk:/pub/riscos/patches/riscos370sa.arc

  51. How do I install the updates?
  52. -----------------------------

  54. 1) Check that you are using !Printers 1.53. You can find the
  55.    version number by running !Printers. Use the menu on the
  56.    !Printers icon on the icon bar, and look at the Info box.
  57.  
  58. 2) Take a backup of your current !Printers 1.53 if desired
  59.    (this is just a precaution). Quit !Printers, if it is
  60.    running.

  62. 3) Open the !Printers directory, by holding down a shift key
  63.    and double-clicking on the !Printers icon in the disc
  64.    viewer. (You will need to find where !Printers is installed
  65.    on your disc.)

  67. 4) Copy the !Run file and the Modules directory (supplied in
  68.    this update kit) into the !Printers directory you have
  69.    just opened. These items update those already there.

  71. !Printers 1.53 is now updated, and can be used as normal.
